Nancy was the president. I have trouble respecting Reagan considering his mental faculties were beginning to fail in the last two years of his term and failed to step down. He began to forget who the people were in his own cabinet!

He had a great group of people to work with and that was a major part of his success. Ok, so Olie North wasn't such a good one. LOL! Call me jaded but I haven't seen a pres as dignafied and genuine sense, but Dubyas not far behind. This may sound sexist but it is also nice to have a First Lady that knows her place. That Billeri gave First Ladys a bad image.

Have a great Friday guys!

It's been said there's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot. The same could be said for being president.

From what I understand, Nancy was the Frist Lady that had fun banging Frank Sinatra on the Oval Office desk and consulting psychics to make her decisions for her.

Of yeah, and her hubbie was a real jewel. As bad an actor on screen as he was in the White House.

Ronald Reagan was one of the greatest presidents in the history of the country and my personal favorite. This man had such a respect for the office he wouldn't take his coat off in the oval office. He broke the Soviet Union and his tax policies set us up for the economy we've enjoyed for the last 12 years.

The Soviet Union bankrupted itself. Ronny Raygun had nothing to do with it. He was living in a permanent time warp to the 50's.

The USSR was imploding long before Reagan took office. The final collapse occurred on his watch, so he is unjustly given sole credit. His tax policies delayed the economic expansion of the 90's. The expansion would have started in the late 80's were it not for voodoo economics. Iran-contra was treason -- pure and simple. There is no defense and no excuse for the hare-brained scheme.

The Wall Street Journal (hardly a liberal newspaper) in a November 1998 editorial said clinton was more fiscally conservative than reagan and clinton's policies were better for the country than reagan's. The same sentiments were publicly echoed by newt gingrich, Bob Dole, and Bush sr, as well as almost every private sector economist.

Even the Soviets give partial credit to Reagan. That is saying a lot. He did impact the collapse of the Soviet Union. He didn't do it on his own, but it would not have happened without him.

Reagan's gov was run by a psychic... and as scandals go, type "Iran Contra" into your google and take a read... it's interesting. As for budgets go... Clinton is the only president in recent memory to have a balanced budget, please don't say that was the Rep Congress... because that doesn't hold water based on what's going on today

not entirely true, in Regan's time I remember Tip on the syteps of congrss pronouncing Regan's budget DOA, they overrode it and outspent his budget, and the greatly increased tax revenue from the tax cuts, every year. Congress (yes democrats) spent us into deficits. If regan's budgets had passed there would have been a balanced budget in 1989. Wouldn't that have been nice.
mtnman

Reagan never sent Congress a balanced budget. Every budget reagan sent Congress contained a deficit larger than the biggest deficit ever proposed under Carter.
In seven of the eight years, the final budget passed by Congress had a smaller deficit than reagan first proposed.

reagan was not a fiscal conservative. Anyone who says he was is an economic idiot.

What are you talking about Mtnman... Regan was Pres from 80-88... during the Clinton years a Republican Congress did help to create a balanced budget... now Bush is sending us back into a deficit with a balanced Congress

The rate of growth of government spending rose faster than GDP growth by a full 1% annually under reagan. The size of the government GREW under reagan.

The rate of growth of Federal spending under clinton was LESS than the GDP growth by a full percent annually. The government SHRUNK under clinton.

Since WWII, Real GDP growth and real wages grew faster under democratic administrations than republican. The only positive note the republicans can claim is inflation was slightly less (<0.1%) under repub presidents.

I really hate to admit it, but the dems have handled the economy better than the repubs.

All I know, is that once Reagan became president and folks started noting his birthday, which happens to be the same as mine, I've had to wake up each birthday and have the day nearly ruined by hearing about him, all the good, bad and ugly. This time around the best they could come up with was "Reagan, still incoherent yet hanging on." This continues through every newscast for the rest of the day.

Enough already ... to quote the Dead Milkmen, I believe, "Why isn't he dead yet?" (though they were talking about Bob Hope, the resemblance is intentional).

Nice debate, gentlemen. The conservatives have a knee-jerk reaction against anyone who can't run the country into unmanageable deficits. If you cut our taxes now, and make our grandchildren and great grandchildren make up for the budget shortfalls, then you are supposedly a conservative.
Happy Birthday Ron. You should be glad that you can't remember the details of the Iran-Contra fiasco.

Hi, bacpac. How is everything in Ark? Good to see you posting regularly, even though you're an old-timer.
What I don't understand is the cry for more fiscal restraint from government, (a positive), but somehow that doesn't apply to the military, CIA, FBI, or any of the sacred cows. This seems like an area where conservatives would be standing in line to help cut the budget, thus saving our tax dollars.

regan increased the size and scope of the military, ,clinton shrank it. that can be accounted for almost all of the difference in the difference in the size of government. also, your 2nd paragraph contradicts itself, how can the rate of growth have shrank under clinton if the size of the gubment shrank? typical liberal slight of hand. kindof like when they say repubs will CUT MEDICARE when they merely suggest to slow the rate of growth. fortunatley for (and because of) the dems, people are always looking for a handout, and buy into the scare tactics.

it is also noteworthy, that to liberals, when the economy is good under a dem pres, the president gets the credit...but when the economy is good under a repub pres, the congress gets the credit. i believe the opposite to be true. there are 2 factors involved here, income & outflow. what regan prooved is that less taxes means more commerce. this has nothing to do with spending. more spending means larger budget shortfalls.

i have never understood the hatred for regan. i suppose that his sucess is at the core. he won 49 states over mondale, so i guess you libs are really pissin in the wind when it comes down to it. it's kinda like sayin the beatles were not all that good of musicians, even though they sold billions of albums.

Well !!!!
He would have gotten my vote had I the chance. From all personal accounts with friends and families from that era; I don't know a soul that suffered do to Reagans plans.

He easily could have gone 3 terms if allowed even after his follies. He had it just like Slick Willy. They both had the attributes needed to win people over.

The Dem's had no one that could compete with that in the 80's even with that little quack from Texas's trying to muscle in on Bush. Likewise the Rep's and Greener's had no one to compete against Teflon Bill in the 90's.

And 'H'AL Gore and whatshisname, well we all know the votes they got and how many they didn't get(thanks Mr Beeks) And it ran deeper than party lines. One should not vote that way. I guess some people like having only a few cards in their hands to win.

Will Durst answers your questions about Uncle Ronnie's funeral...

Q. Isn't there some sort of time limit on these things?
A. You're right, it seemed like about a year. But Reagan-Palooza has wound down, and they finally put the old man in the ground. Reluctantly. I mean, c'mon, JFK only got 4 days.

Q. Is it really over over, or is this just an intermission?
A. Well, if Karl Rove had his way, they'd still be dragging the body back and forth across the country in the bed of a Ford F-150 pickup, stopping at county fairs, right up till the election. He probably approached the widow with a contingency plan to dig up the carcass of conservatism in case Bush's prospects head South later this summer.

Q. Why did the networks go so crazy with non-stop footage?
A. This is going to sound silly, but they went crazy because they could. Eight years as President piled on top of eight years as governor added to 20 years in film and TV: they had footage up the wazoo.

Q. Still, don't you think it was kind of overdone?
A. You think so? I switched on the national news on Thursday and they cut from another unctuous paean to Reagan to a story on the Laci Peterson trial and I actually heard myself mutter out loud, "Thank God."

Q. Does Reagan get frequent flyer miles for all those cross-country coffin trips?
A. Probably not, but then the chances of him cashing them in are pretty slim anyway.

Q. Is this going to help Bush?
A. What a repugnant suggestion. To sully the death and mourning of a national legend by raising the ugly specter of partisan politics.

Q. Does that mean yes?
A. A 168-hour commercial on the ideals of conservatism? Yeah, you could say this is going to help Bush. You could also say wolverines make lousy crib toys.

Q. What long-term repercussions are expected?
A. Well, if this unfortunate demise and subsequent memorial buoys Bush, and Kerry falls behind in the polls, you know his people are going to have to consider taking out Clinton in October. If they don't need that big of a bounce, Carter.

Q. Any advice for the former Presidents?
A. I've heard Gstaad is nice in the fall.

Q. Do you really think they'll put Ronnie's face on the 10 dollar bill?
A. I'm thinking the ten thousand dollar bill would be much more appropriate.

Q. Wasn't it a mite cruel to honor a man who suffered through the throes of Alzheimer's for more than ten years with logos entitled "Remembering Ronald Reagan"?
A. I refuse to dignify that question with an answer.

Q. Okay, moving on. What was that whole "they've been planning this deal for over 10 years" crap?
A. Settle down, after you've fossilized into a beloved institution for a couple decades, you get the same free pass to arrange your burial for maximum press coverage.

Q. Does Nancy Reagan get to take a nap now?
A. Hopefully. As the week wore on, the poor lady looked more and more like a Pez Dispenser every day.

Q. What do you think of Kerry's decision to suspend his campaign during Reagan Death Week?
A. It might help in that the people who are aware he suspended his campaign are also now aware that he at one time had one -- and might again someday.
