My goal was to raise my kids and spend as much time with them as I could. Now that they are grown or nearly grown I need a new goal. Any of you young skeezers wanna start a family? I make great looking kids.

To get my golf handicap down below 10 before I retire....which I hoped to do by the time I was 55,but...the way the market is going...I will be working until SS kicks in...ouch!!!

But hey, the truck will be paid off as soon as I get my tax refund...and the house will be paid off by 2004...maybe sooner now that the truck payment is gone.

Hmmm... my house is already paid for and I don't owe anybody anything. My kids are grown and doing well--they all make more money than I do. I have reached that give back to the community stage. I just hope I don't make a total fool of myself in the process!!

MaryPhyl, that comment just begs the question, "Why, whatever do you mean?" You are at the stage where you can give back to the community, OR you are planning on getting up on the community stage OR both?

MaryPhyl, I don't know, every town is a little different. Right now I am in the middle of a program called "Great Paintings" where I get a set of prints from the library and a guidebook that can be speedread. I present two of the paintings at a time, to my daughters' classes (1st and 3rd grade) for about 30 minutes, for five presentations. The kids ask a million questions, I describe the techniques that the artist used and what might have been his or her motivation, etc. It is usually fun. In some classes, we don't have any parent volunteers, so they don't get the presentation. We also do a science program, where parent volunteers help with experiments. So there are "teaching" oppurtunities in the schools.

Then there are the Girl Scouts. Most of the people teaching the training classes are women who's children are grown. These classes involve camping, fire making, hiking, trip planning, orienteering, etc. As far as I know, these people are volunteers, not employees.

There are all the well known avenues, like the Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, the churches, Special Olympics, and the womens shelters. Some hospitals have a number of boarder babies that no one wants to take home. They need someone to hold them and talk to them, because the nurses don't have that much time not given to urgent tasks.

There are always fundraisers that need running at various charities, scouting groups, etc., if you like that kind of thing.

My older daughter's scout troop went to a nursing home to sing holiday songs in December. Some of the patients had bright decorations all over their rooms, and some had none, either because they had no funds or relatives to bring things and put them up. So the girl scouts went home, made decorations and went back and put them up, and sang some more songs. The patients were extremely happy and grateful.

The scouts made a request for toiletries to be donated, and then sewed drawstring bags, filled them with shampoo, soap, toothpaste and brushes, and gave them to the local homeless shelter.

I use to buy a ton of school supplies during the back to school sales, and put together bags for the school kids at the local low income housing complex.

There are a zillion of things that can be done to "give back to the community", and everyone has to find those activities that they enjoy more than the rest.
