“I'm going to Georgia at the end of March and I'm planning to hike up Blood Mountain and the Surrounding area. Does anybody know how tough the hiking is in that area?” 10:31:12 PM 2/08/02 “There is a guy that can help you. I think his name is Chip. Walkindude knows him.” 10:35:34 PM 2/08/02 “I think both walkindude and Radagast have done it.” 10:36:39 PM 2/08/02 “If you add up all the mile-age that it takes to summit Blood mountain and multiplied it by the how many time Radagast has summited it you would have hiked the entire AT” 10:48:30 PM 2/08/02 “blood mountain sounds scary” 12:54:21 AM 2/09/02 “Hey Rad, how 'bout some help.” 7:58:29 AM 2/09/02 “I've only hiked down it. Seriously, coming in North bound on the AT is not that tough going up. Going down towards Neels gap is a #&%!$. If you're dayhiking up and down from Neel's gap then its a workout. The view is great. If you could time it when the rhododendron are in bloom it would be even better. I think that's late March or early April. Some of the Ga folks could confirm that. Good luck.” 12:23:36 PM 2/09/02 “It is true that Radagast is the expert on ways to reach Blood Mountain. I have gone there from Dockery Lake...the Dockery Lake trail goes up to Miller Gap on the AT then you follow the AT thru Jarrard , Bird and Slaughter Gaps on to Blood Mtn.. The easiest trail up in my opinion, which i did last spring with rad (i think it was in May and the rhododendrons and laurel were magnificent!) is the Slaughter Creek/Jarrard Gap trails that originate at Lake Winfield Scott they both start out together and split, but you can get to AT either one and they actually offer a nice loop trip. Check a map for more details... josh...dont let the names Blood and Slaughter daunt you...it is a gorgeous area:)” 6:44:00 PM 2/09/02 “why do they call it "blood" moutain?” 7:12:11 PM 2/09/02 7:48:51 PM 2/09/02 blood mtn “from neels gap, it is a good physical hike. well worth the effort.we camped on top and watched a great sunrise.” 8:02:32 PM 2/09/02 “This will be our first mountain hike. We are just day hiking so we won't have heavy packs. I would like to take the Neels Gap approach to the mountain. Do you recommend this.” 9:18:40 PM 2/09/02 Blood Mountain? “Sounds like a pile of used tampons” 8:22:49 PM 2/10/02 “EW!” 8:24:25 PM 2/10/02 “Great Hill. You'll love it! The shelter is a bit drafty with no window shutters and a missing door. Fantastic views! Neels Gap is a easy way up. Woody gap would be a bit longer. I've never been up from the lake though. Rad or OM could tell you more about that part.” 11:34:06 PM 2/10/02 “Indians named the mountain Blood Mtn because just south of there in a gap they now call Slaughter Gap (there's also a Slaughter Mountain), there was a very bloody battle between the Cherokee and Creek Indians. Very beautiful area for such a horrible name. I'm doing a dayhike on Sat. Feb 16 from Woody Gap to Neels Gap on the At (approx 10 miles). This will include Blood Mtn. If anyone's interested let me know.” 5:54:31 AM 2/11/02 Hey om! “Don't forget me and Belle! We were there with you, too. Us and your "fiance" - heh! (Slow Jen, too). Nice destination from any approach...” 8:54:54 AM 2/11/02 “the hike from lake winfield scott is a bit longer, more gradual and more scenic. from neels gap, it's steeper, but shorter. there are also many other interesting trails that come out of the blood mountain wilderness, besides the AT. email me, if you need more info. "deathtruckjr@yahoo.com"” 9:09:12 PM 2/11/02 “I sent you an email last night Rad. Thanks for the help.” 8:16:44 AM 2/12/02 “Are there any good trout streams in this area?” 8:00:31 PM 2/12/02 “yes, but i don't know where they are.” 8:22:08 PM 2/12/02 “I have 2 Guides to N. Georgia Wildlife management areas.great topo map with hiking trails, trout streams camp sites, scenic areas...etc...great map......I would be happy to mail one out to you if you email me your addy... it says that "fisherman may fish in over 1000 miles of primary trout and warm water streams on the forest.(chatahoochee nf) .also 10 lakes" there are fees/license involved i am sure. I camped on waters creek when i hiked up the Dockery Lake trail to Bl Mtn....there was a sign with a picture of a fish on it....not sure what it meant, i didnt read it.....:) but there is fishing at dockery lake (it is a trout lake) I thought it was a beautifully scenic and remote area.., , but it is 3.4 miles just to Miller Gap, then another 5-6 to Blood Mountain.....I guess it would be ok as a day hike if you like to cover lots of miles. be careful, ..you will totally fall in love with that area, whatever path you decide to take.” 10:50:42 PM 2/12/02 “Thanks OM. This is a great map.” 9:20:31 PM 2/20/02
