a cup of warm milk, a valerian tablet and a hot water bottle usually work for me.

of course, i work a 12hr nightshift, so i'm ready to sleep whenever an opportunity presents itself.

Again - Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body. Consumption of melatonin may interrupt, and stop, the bodies production of Melatonin. However, no long term studies have ever been done.

messing with hormones is dangerous, especially ones that haven't been clinically studied enough.

"Some people may experience vivid dreams or nightmares when they take melatonin. Overuse or incorrect use of melatonin could disrupt circadian rhythms. Melatonin can cause drowsiness if taken during the day. Individuals experiencing morning drowsiness after taking melatonin at night should take less of the supplement. Additional side effects that have been reported from melatonin include stomach cramps, dizziness, headache, irritability, decreased libido, breast enlargement in men (called gynecomastia), and decreased sperm count.

Melatonin could interfere with fertility and also should not be taken by pregnant or nursing women."

valerian is an herbal remedy. it doesn't leave you extra-tired the next day like Rx stuff does, just relaxes you enough to fall asleep. doc ok'd it for my 10yr old even so it can't be that bad.
sleepy-time herbal tea is supposed to work too(i personally cannot stand it)

EVERY THING has problems & don't they say EVERYTHING causes cancer or has some side effects for some people? Spent a LOT of time with hundreds of MD's at a teaching hospital & they didn't see any problem with occasional use of melatonin. They would have written a script if we'd asked. My partner use to let the students "stick him" for practice.

We liked ephreda too, for occasional 30 hour shifts. Still like it. Guess THAT should have killed me 25 years ago & glory be, ready to retire with no medical problems. Do have a couple side effects from 2x4's, knives & guns though.

that nyquil is the stuff, don't bother measuring it out in the cap, just take a good shot outa the bottle and lay down. You're right SC about them dreams plus I feel goofy the next morning for a half hour or so.

Valerian never really worked for me. Of course choking down the foul tasting capsules may have had something to do with it. Valerian translates as strong, and that refers to the flavor. I had a lot of problems sleeping while preggers. My doctors recommended popping a benadryl. IT had the least side effects.

I was up most the night. My idjit neighbors A) have an unnecessarily loud outdoor speaker for their alarm

B) get home from working at a bar at 2 am

C) Set the f-------g thing off at least twice a month.

How did you know? My Fiance called it "PMS with a severe sun burn" :D

Today at a shindig I almost took a women's head off for using the back of my chair as a footrest.

Like those nights where I've had a nightcap to get to sleep only to wake up in the middle of the night when the booze wore off, to lie awake with the beginnings of a hangover. That's usually after the 1/2 pitcher of margaritas.

I never wake in the middle of the night except to pee. I may wake an hour after "falling" asleep, in a REM cycle way too early.

I've been seeing a ton of Lunesta commercials. The sleeping pill has quite a few side effects including dependency and you're not supposed to use it while drinking, so no Lunesta for you bearmagnet. You just needed to drink more, lol:)

yeah. Though I can only drink about 4-5 days every 2 weeks, I Would rather not take a script for insomnia. Did almost miss my Dr. appt today, though.

I went back to hiking to fall asleep
For the past three years I have to be out of nextel and cell phone range to get rest. If they can find me I may have to come back. Last week, I worked my usual 730 AM to 5PM, then I had a 5AM call on Tuesday morning, 2AM call Wednesday, worked till 11PM Thursday and had to get up at 3 AM Friday.....that is why I went backpacking Saturday Morning.....I find it is tough to lay down after working a Fire Investigation for 3 hours or more...guzzling coffee to stay awake and THEN try to go to sleep.

I use progressive relaxation, and close my eyes and imagine I am out hiking or kayaking on a trip....be gone in 5 minutes.
