Feb 8 - 10

Firday,
Myself, & friends Hoytt and his son SlimJim met Super Troll & MDSHiker at Savage Gulf Rangerstation. We hit the trail and headed for Hobbs Cabin via the North Rim. Along the way we took a side trip up the Mountain Oak Trail Big Tree Spur Trail (new trails). Strolled on further and took a break at Tommy Point Overlook. We were gettin pretty excited about making Hobbs's Cabin but uppon arrival we found a solo hiker was there already. Super Troll and I went in and set our packs down. As we came out a man was walking toward the Cabin with a load of firewood. We said "Hodwy". He asked if we were moving in the cabin and we said yes. He didn't look too happy and finally said, OK, I'll move out then. We were confused and said "Why"? He said He wanted solitude and didn't want to be around people. We explained to him that we wouldn't bother him and was not intending to run him out but He started packing. He got his firewood and went to a camp site. On his last visit to the cabin to get the last of his wood I told him we felt bad for spoiling his solitude and he said "well you should feel bad"! Then he started telling us how rude we were. This guy was WIERD! Kinda reminded me of Mine and Rad's run-in with Chip on the AT.
With Psycho-hiker gone we finished getting wood & water. Everybody claimed a bunk and we setteled in.

Saturday
We got up and headed down the Connector Trail. Rain was forcasted but skies were bright & sunny. About Noon we got to the Junction of the Stagecoach Historic trail and went up. Skies were still Sunny. At the top we filtered water and walked the last mile to camp (Stage Road Camp). We made a fire and and kicked back. The last of us hit the sack at 10:30 and the stars were still out. No rain.

Sunday
I woke up to the sound of Hoytt stirring. The rain was still no where in site. We packed and had a quick breakfast and hit the trail. We had 7 easy miles to the Ranger station. About halfway out the skies started to look gray so pack covers went on and rain jackets were at the ready. The rain finally started down with 1.5 miles to go. We were under a canopy of trees and never really got very wet. From the Trail Head we drove to an Army Surplus store to look around and then to Pizza Hut!

The whole trip was only about 26 miles but we had a great time. Super Troll is a great guy to hike with. We all enjoyed his Military stories. MDSHiker is a nice guy too but not the most talkative guy I've ever met. Of course maybe he just couldn't get a word in edge wise. LOL! (Just kidding)

You Are Rude Dude!!
Hey, that's right - I couldn't get in a word between Super Troll and the Dude. (joking)

It was a perfect trip as far as I'm concerned. Great weather, trail, food, and friends. It's always good to get away from the stresses of work and home. The Savage Gulf area is beautiful and I can't wait to get back there. Thanks to everyone for the good time.

No doubt. SCRA is one of my favorites. Glad you folks enjoyed your outing. Like I posted earlier, solitude at Hobbs Cabin is rare. I don't know if you quys registered at the ranger station or not; but if "your socially challenged friend" bothered to register....he (techically) owned the cabin for that night. Alone or not. That said, I almost always enjoy meeting new folks on the trail and ALWAYS share shelter space. Anyway - next time you head to SCRA - give me shout and I'll throw out the welcome mat wherever I am.
