Ever find a condition in the mountain?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 35 of 35 messages posted.
“What I mean is has anything ever happened to you while you are backpacking that lead to some new condition. Like for example, I was bping in the smokies, and going up a monster of a hill, and along the way I started weezing, and couldnt stop, a few miles up I had a asthma attack. First time I ever had one. When I got back to home, went the doc, and got my new bastard inhaler.” 1:36:49 PM 2/11/02 “I found that I was fat and out of shape in the mountains. When I got home I had to start running more often. Sorry to hear about the asthma!” 1:40:40 PM 2/11/02 “I was in the Wind Rivers one time and thought I was getting altitude sickness. So I stayed in camp for the day and drank bourbon and smoked weed until I felt better. Great remedy.” 1:43:38 PM 2/11/02 “Hee hee Toejam, I don't need to go to the mountains to find out I'm out of shape and fat. I gotta exercise more and eat less junk food. Yep Zeus, sorry to hear about your asthma.” 1:44:49 PM 2/11/02 “I had pneumonia about 16 months ago and have had asthma ever since. When I get to the mountains though, I can breathe like a striped ape. Baltimore has some of the country's worst air quality. I've heard Houston is worse!” 1:50:57 PM 2/11/02 “Cough,Cough, hack, hack. Nothing wrong with our air here. Today it's kinda pink, some days it's gray, some days black. The pink days are the purtyest.” 1:55:59 PM 2/11/02 yes! “I found out that I'm afraid of heights! That sucks, Zeus.” 2:42:59 PM 2/11/02 “I thought I was in pretty good shape when I tried to hike up a portion of Pikes Peak in Colorado. As soon as I got above about 8000ft I thought I was going to die. Hiked about 6 miles over 5 hours and never caught my breath the whole time. My lungs were sore for a week.” 3:46:27 PM 2/11/02 “Looks like you were going to spiral into oblivion there. Still 8000 ft is still pretty high up.” 3:53:49 PM 2/11/02 “i only found blisters....” 4:01:58 PM 2/11/02 “Twig -- Don't tell me . . .you discovered that going across the Knife's Edge??!!!” 4:02:21 PM 2/11/02 “i found out i was fat along time ago” 4:07:50 PM 2/11/02 “Zeus.... I've been an asthmatic for many years now and don't hike without the Ventolin....personally, I use it sparingly and only carry it for the "in case I need it purposes".... sorry you found out the hard way... Oh...and as for a condition...yes indeed...almost forgot...well one day while hiking up a small gorge in central PA, I thought my eyes decieved me but after rubbing them a bit it was quite real....looking straight up the gorge with this bubbling stream meandering down through it....I saw something rather interesting and required much examination....I don't recall how far up the gorge it was when I first caught eyeball on the subject but it was close enough and I eventually hiked up to the scene....rather quickly mind you...now what I saw was a downed tree stretching from one side of the stream to the other and standing smack in the middle was a really awesome vivacious woman wearing a bleach white thong bikini....again I thought I was seeing things...like my imagination was coming to life but I had 2 fellow hikers alongside that confirmed the sighting....yep I see 1 Woman wearing said white thong bikini....well when we arrived at the scene there were 2 fellows off to the side which I never saw until I got up there...they had cameras all over the place....an obvious shoot in the making...I mean we're busting the scene...anyway you're probably wondering what the condition is or was or whatever...after that...I was convinced I like white thong bikinis.....life is good...” 4:38:10 PM 2/11/02 “great story” 4:40:43 PM 2/11/02 “I hiked from Crow Gulch Picnic Area (8000ft) to Glen Cove (~12,000ft). The part at 8,000 wasn't that bad, it was pretty flat. After that it was like climbing a 6 mile staircase. My headache was horrendous, probably caused by a lack of oxygen to my brain and it hurt to breathe normally for a week...I'd do it again :)” 4:43:51 PM 2/11/02 “when i Hike i get hungry” 4:47:05 PM 2/11/02 “I've twice gotten mild altitude sickness at 1 mile elevation. Once on Stratton Bald (5260 feet), a headache, and another time in Denver (shortness of breath). Where I live in suburban New Orleans it is BELOW sea level. So any altitude at all is a big change for me.” 4:47:46 PM 2/11/02 “Chief, that sounds like a good remedy to many of my ailments. Could you please mail me some samples so I can give it a try?” 4:49:22 PM 2/11/02 “i got bad altitude sickness at 10,000 ft. I had a headache, nausia, and trouble breathing i fineshed the trail and felt better” 4:50:21 PM 2/11/02 Mine's the reverse “My ENT doc diagnosed my nagging little hack of a chronic cough as hypersensitive airway, or some such, probably due to environmental exposure -- in other words, bad indoor/civilized air over too many years (not a smoker, but that year of Chinese thick air didn't help). The great thing is, it goes away when I go hiking out in the woods and wilds. I was worried that putting extra stress on my breathing would trigger it worse, but even the strain of BPing the Badlands in super dry and hot conditions didn't provoke any coughing (just dehydration and exhaustion, but that's a whole 'nutha thing). Love that clean, wild air.” 4:51:27 PM 2/11/02 “Sorry kleetn, that would be illegal. LMAO That was at about 10,000' too. The best thing was the guys I was with brought back fresh trout for dinner. That and really bad bite marks from some insect. Only UNDER their gators though. Really wierd. I did however have the Au Gratin potatos hydrated and ready for cooking.” 5:04:33 PM 2/11/02 “I've found myself in a drunken condition on a mountain” 5:19:52 PM 2/11/02 “Thanks for the thanks guys. Seems like most ppl get altitude sickness more then anything else. Hehehe too bad we all cant get what stratusloop got.:)” 6:51:54 PM 2/11/02 “i found a condom in the mountains” 7:04:59 PM 2/11/02 “Eww.” 7:10:51 PM 2/11/02 “ich...........” 9:16:37 PM 2/11/02 strausloop “It still rouses my gland to think we didn';t get any great pictures. But the ones I got are enough to stir the memories...To ya'll out there, ya shoulda been there... Condition...was on a long hike in the Pine Barrens in NJ and hiked for freekin ever and blew my arch out from hikin in the sand. Been wearing orthonics ever since. No white thong bikini's on that hike...only stratuspoop.... ....ewwwwwwwwwwwwww.” 11:27:30 PM 2/11/02 “Discovered that I had emphysema...I became short of breath while on a 10 day with the kids last year......when I went to the doctor he asked under what conditions I noticed it, I told him around 8,000', with a 60lb pack, on a steep slope....he said hell, anyone would....I told him I was a climber and this was different, after the tests they found that I was in the early stages of it. I still climb and go high, I just do it a little slower then I used to...... If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken much better care of myself.” 1:18:50 AM 2/12/02 “well I guess this qualifies as a condition if temporary - developed a skin infection (cellulitis) as the result of bouncing a log off my shin while doing trail maintenance. I guess it shows that I should have keep that instant ice pack in the first aid kit - if I had iced it down when it happened it probably would not have had such a big bruse and would not have had as big a chance of developing the cellulitis. Oh well - it was a good idea at the time - I think I'll put together two first aid kits - one for trail maintenance hikes and one for normal hikes - for trail maintenance days the extra weight is not too important - generally I carray about 20 pounds of tools anyways.” 6:58:29 AM 2/12/02 “I've had a couple of ordinary situations in Nepal. Amoebic dysentry at 10540 feet at Namche Bazzar. Mild Chicken Pox trying to cross Thorung La in the Annapurnas at about 17329 feet. Strangely I didnt get AMS on either occasion. I did get a mild form of AMS while on a bus going to Leh in in Ladakh, I forget the height, something over 14500 feet. It's like somone's trying to cave you skull in from the inside.” 7:11:53 AM 2/12/02 it's really vertigo... “Pretty close, lee. I was on the Abol trail when I looked back and saw the tops of giant trees through the fog. The world took a spin, but I didn't dare turn around. Made it to the tableland, and breathed a sigh of relief - too soon - I started down the Hunt Trail on my butt, wore a hole in my shorts. Fool that I am I listened to someone who said I could go across the Knife Edge on my butt, yeah right! I discovered the joy of rock hugging that day.” 7:54:59 AM 2/12/02 “How high do you have to go to get altitude sickness?” 2:57:59 PM 2/12/02 “According to Lonely Planet "AMS has been reported at any altitude over 1800m (5580ft), although it occurs more comonly and more severly at higher altitudes." On a personal level I find it kicks in over 3300m. It depends on the person.” 4:55:20 AM 2/13/02 “"i just stepped in to see what condition my condition was in"” 7:22:53 AM 2/13/02 “Do I hear an echo?” 7:33:38 AM 2/13/02
