Help Me!!!!
I need some advice, suggestions, comments please!!! My wife and I are thinking of moving to Las Vegas so that I can attend UNLV and finish my schooling and she would get a teaching job. She has lived there before and says its a great place and not just a place to gamble. Anybody here live there or have lived there in the past? It seems to me that there are a lot of outdoor destinations surrounding the Las Vegas. California, Utah, Arizona etc...

Will an outdoor loving person like me like living in the city there???

Which parts of the city are best to live in? How about Henderson?

Any serious comments will be appreciated?

the urban area is nice. The casinos are in just one area of the city.

I live in CA...
where are you moving from? I know there are some nice looking wilderness places (I've heard from people who live there, and saw one or two on TV too). I would suggest looking around the net for info, and then going for a few days just to look around.

Actually We live on the East Coast. Live in PA and work in NJ. I did a cost of living comparison and it was 1% lower in Las Vegas.

The Red Rock desert, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Big Bear. These are just some of the places to venture into the wilds. Just get ready for desert wilderness, not to much of a huge forest nearby.

Sheesh, Feeney .. heheheeh... I could think of worse places. Mountains almost surround the city. Red Rock Canyon -- and a lot of places to hike, mt. bike and rock climb -- is only 20 miles west. I think it's Spring (or Springer?) Mt. is only a little farther NW. St. George, Utah and its mountains... 2 hours. Zion National Park... 2.5 hours. Bryce... 3.5. Escalante Grand Staircase... just beyond. Capitol Reef N't Park... 5 hours (yes, I've driven that one back to Vegas to catch a flight!! lol) Death Valley... 2-3 hours. Kernsville, California... maybe 5 (??) Joshua Tree... I think something like 2-3. Kanab is around 5 + 1.5 more to main area of N. Rim Grand Canyon. Toroweap is closer, but you need good weather. :-) S. Rim Grand Canyon around 6 I think. Etc. Etc. Let's not forget the great interior of Nevada... Area 51 (ooooooooooohhhh!). Great Basin N'tl Park (never been, but would like to go)

I think **I** would like it! Plus... THOSE FREE BUFFETS!!

Talk to Reptiles. He's "been there, done that" (once he found an outdoorsy woman, he liked it a lot better... right, Truk?? lol)

Oh, but one thing I wouldn't like. The environmentalist in me would get ticked at all that really stupid usage of water in a desert. Like the West is rolling in water... and there's a lot to spare for green lawns and dancing water fountains. *sigh*

Only been to Vegas once, but on the flight in, I saw all the mountains and though, boy I'd sure love to hike those.

It is desert scrub though, so you'd have to get used to that.

A friend of mine has friends who lived there. They said once you get past the strip, Las Vegas is nice.

The Tahoe Rim Trail is about 8 hours north. Along the way you go to Yosemite, Sequoia Kings, Mels house, you know that whole Sierra Range thing.

yeah and I didn't even mention Tahoe!! or the Western Sierras!! I did mention Kernsville, at the southern end of Sierras. Very nice town low in the mountains. Cool rafting river... big lake... skiing nearby... sequoia (sp?) trees... Ahhhhhhhhhhh!! It looked very nice.

That reminds me... 4 hours or so. Brian Head, Utah. Delicious mt. biking and skiing. Hiking, too. And Cedar Breaks is right there.

Well...We've been busy doing all the planning and getting the house ready for the market. We are most like moving the second week of August. In April we are flying out to check out some apartments and so I can see the University etc..

Anyone want to buy a 3 Bedroom/ 2 Bath Log Home on 1.25 acres in NE PA? Selling Price will be $179,900 and it will go on the market at the beggining of June.

Boulder City is a small town 15 minutes outside Vegas next to Lake Mead. It shuts down at about 10 pm and seems to be a quiet community. My brother lived there for a couple years while working for Skydive Las Vegas. He enjoyed it and your commute to UNLV wouldn't be too bad, either.

You'd also be a few hours from Disneyland and all the other S. California destinations.

I drove around vegas when I was there
it is really a nice town, outside of the strip. the only thing is all the lights. that really sucks. can;t see no starz till your outside the city, but man...its awsome when you do.

In ya'lls great race to name the cool places around vegas, you forgot the great Mojave Desert. One of the neatest place that I have been. Route 66 goes right through the Mojave to Needles.

Man, have you got it made, half a day drive in any direction and you have some of Gods greatest creations...ENJOY!!!!!!!

Elvis is not dead! I have in on good authority from Prince Mongo (a well known Memphis character and sometimes nightclub owner) that Elvis is alive and well. Besides, there are all those people hanging out in front of Graceland who refuse to believe he is gone.

And they're all livin' devil may care
And I'm just the devil with love to spare
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

How I wish that there were more
Than the twenty-four hours in the day
'Cause even if there were forty more

A fortune won and lost on ev'ry deal
All you need's a strong heart and a nerve of steel
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

And your one armbandits crashin'
All those hopes down the drain

Lady luck please let the dice stay hot
Let me shout a seven with ev'ry shot

Vegas Lap-Dance Law Overturned

LAS VEGAS (AP)
— A Las Vegas law prohibiting strippers from fondling customers during lap dances is unconstitutionally vague, a judge ruled.

District Court Judge Sally Loehrer affirmed a lower court ruling that as many as five misdemeanor criminal cases filed against Las Vegas strippers should be dismissed.

Friday's ruling affects only dancers within city limits. The Clark County Commission (search) in 2002 limited touching between strippers and patrons during private lap dances, specifically barring strippers from touching or sitting on the customer's genital area.

But the municipal code was not as specific, saying only that strippers and their patrons should not "fondle" or "caress" each other.

City attorneys told Loehrer touching is illegal when dancers engage in contact aimed at sexually arousing the customer. But defense lawyer James Colin argued the lack of specifics makes it impossible to enforce the law.

"It's too confusing," Colin said. "No one knows."

Under Loehrer's ruling, no dancer in the city can be arrested for violating the municipal code. The city is considering an appeal.
