We Try Harder
From the Baltimore Sun 2/12/02

Baltimore ranks first in the nation in out-of-wedlock births, with more than three out of every four children being born to unmarried mothers in the city. Figures reflect out-of-wedlock births as a percentage of all births during a 12-month period that ended Dec. 27, 2001.

City %OOWB Rank
Balt. 77 1
Atlanta 64 2
New Orleans 64 2
Milwaukee 61 4

Must be the 'Charm City" effect. Who the hell decided to call it Charm City, anyway? I liked it a lot better when The Block was still in business and The Hot Nuts played Lithuanian Hall every year. It's true, you can't go back home.

I loved Baltimore back in the '50s. Of course it has changed, just like all the big cities. But the new, redeveloped Inter Harbor area is fantastic. Take a good appetitite with you, if you have a chance to visit. And they now have a beautiful, new Baseball Stadium downtown near the water.

Viva Baltimore.

This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen posted on TT. Can you imagine what life is going to be like for the majority of those newborns... no stable family, low poverty, poor education, no positive role models, etc etc etc etc.

Gee, I wonder where the next generation of criminals will come from?

I hesitate to answer, thinking there's humor here somewhere that I've missed (again).

"Quote the Raven, nevermore" is from Edger Allen Poe, you may have heard of him. He's an East Coast native, wrote a few books & some poetry. He lived in the area and is buried in Baltimore. I used to walk by his gravesite often, it's in an old churchyard between the Univ of Md. Hospital on Greene St. and Lexington market.

It is a sad statistic.

The Edgar Allen Poe house is in a rough neighborhood.
I've driven by and stopped only for a moment without getting out of the car.

Next generation of criminals......
you bet.

Yes, there are a lot of rough neighborhoods in Baltimore. It has a changed a lot since I attended the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps school at Ft. Holibird.(now gone)

I did get a little worried when I got lost there a few times during 1996-2000. One of my daughters graduated from JHU in 2000.

The Raven is a wonderful poem, a real classic.

My mom grew up in Baltimore-my dads family migrated there from NC in the early 50's-I lived there in both the 60's (Ft.Meade) and the 70's (Edgewood Arsenal).

One newspaper, reporting the death of Poe, described the cause as "congestion of the brain" - he drank himself to death. Seems like Baltimore has always been kind of rough. But, hey, our cities have always been seething, crowded, dirty places. It's part of what gives them their character.
