I need to convert decimal Lat's & Long's to a UTM coordinate ASAP for the stinking BLM.

Does anybody have a website address where I can go to to do this?

Not Topozone, there F'd up right now.

I'm assuming UTM means degrees, minutes, and seconds. If so, here's an easy way. Say you have 35.6253. This equals 35d37m31.08seconds. Take .6253 and multiply it times 60 for 60 seconds in a minute. This will give 37. Subtract 37 from you # which leaves .518. Multiply .518 times 60 which give 31.08. If you have a bunch to do, you could use a spreadsheet to do multiple ones at a time.

This Should Help

Chief,

If you need to do this on a regular basis, download Corpscon. It's a Windows freeware program that allows you to convert coordinates between all sorts of systems and datums and metric and English units. I use it all the time. Feel free to email me if you want more details.

Do you have Arcview? Use the projection extension.

There is no convenient math formula to hand crank because lat-long is not a projection like UTM. The relationship varies.

Alternatively: load the lat-long into a GPS as waypoints. Convert to UTM display and read them back.

Hey - maybe I'll learn something here.

What does a surveyor mean when they say South 54 Degrees 45 Minutes 28 Seconds East?

I believe that's a bearing, but I alway screw up which way to rotate the line. It's been 10 years since I took a surveying class. My guess would be that its 54.75777 deg South of East, but I don't know for sure.

Start with a bearing of south (magnetic or true depending on specs), then move your bearing 54 degrees, 45 minutes and 28 seconds toward the east.

dayhiker, it would be 54 degrees E of S

Thanks!

That sounds more like it. That would also be 180-54.757777 = 125.242223 clockwise from North. Isn't this fun?

You can also convert coordinates with a shareware program called Waypoint+. Developed by the state of California as a PC utility for Garmin GPS units.

Can't find the download link right now.

Ok Buddur, I found the Jeep.com website. Now, Do I use the NAD-83 or NAD-27 values.

I am converting lat/long from a decimal degrees, into a UTM value.

Both NAD-83 and NAD return different UTM numbers, which I believe represent meters from North or East in my case. They are as much as 500 differnet.

I am getting my numbers off a survey plat that references a map called Eagle Hill Quadrangle, of which, my map is dated...1955.

If you're wet, 54 degrees is pretty cold and you could become hypothermic and die.

BLM most likely uses NAD27.

All the historic maps and data are in NAD27 and BLM probably stays there for compatibility.

Also make sure you are using the correct UTM zone.

If the map is from 1955, use NAD 27. NAD 83 wasn't around in 1955.

Coincedence?
When I was looking around the Jeep.com website, I found where I could contact someone with questions.

Guess what his name was?

Matt@Jeep.com

Same Matt?
