I'd look for jeep or 4x4 clubs on the net for those states

Try 4x4 clubs, off-road clubs, etc. A local 4x shop will also know of local clubs.

In addition to knowing trails, they also sponsor rallies and events, and put on clinics on how to 4-wheel safely, tread lightly, etc.

Check with the local Forest Service.
Come to California... I got a Jeep and I know how to use it.!!!

I love combining Offroading and Backpacking. One of my favorite hikes requires that I spend 1 hour on a Jeep trail to get to the trailhead. Lots of fun!!!

Your local forest service should even have maps of the areas for free or a small fee. At least they do that here in CA. :)

From a 4-wheeling friend of mine:

Kentucky: Daniel Boone National Forest. You pretty much need a guide because they have permission to run the local trails, but it's not too expensive if you get 4 or 5 people together. There's probably a lot
you can do without a guide too, but the trails are confusing, so you will need GOOD maps and skill in using them. : ) I took a mosty stock TJ there and had a lot of fun. We had several XJ's and a ZJ in our group too. Nobody came away with more than scratches, but we didn't do any of the crazy stuff. We camped at Cliffview Resort. Check out the web.

Indiana: Place called "The Badlands" in Attica. Something like 2000 acres of private land. Everything from quarry to mud to sand dune to rock crawling. Some of the trails are tight and very difficult. They actually have size restrictions on them too, as in no fullsize vehicles, or
motorcycle/ATV only. Also good fun with others, but probably not so much by yourself. They of course have a website.

Ohio. You got me there. I have no idea where to go wheeling in Ohio. Do they even allow that kind of lewd behavior in Ohio????

My Environmental defence for Jeeps
What is the point of having a jeep if ya don't take it off the highway?

Environmental defence of Jeeps and off road vehicles: It is much more harmful on the environment to build a paved road that would be accessable to all vehicles so Jeeps were created. It is the lesser of two evils!!! So now I have bridged the hipocracy of being a Liberal Democrat Environmental "Wacko" and owning my sweet raised Jeep!!! Now I can sleep at night!

No problem. The guy who gave me that info works for DaimlerChrysler/Jeep engineering, and regularly "borrows" a jeep or two to play. He's gearing up for another trip to Montana right now.

Someone wasn't too thrilled with me parking in a wash this weekend (see Santa Rosa Ruins trip). I didn't see any "restricted" signs, but came back to "keep out!" written on my window, plus a hand written note, and they built a wall to block me in.

I have a 4Runner....not jeep. I was thinking "SUV haters" did it. We also saw vehicles (and footprints) as far as 3 miles down the road. Could've been someone that was bummed about having to walk all that way. I paid for 4WD, and like to use it when I can.

Isn't a 4Runner considered a jeep? BTW, I drool over that car...my heart, be still...

No "there is only ONE Jeep", but the 4Runner is sweet in it's own way. Jeeps have a shorter wheel base so that is why they do a lot better off road.

Land Rover has a thing you can go to in WV and one in CO? maybe, anyways they take you off road, and thru a river and stuff show you how to put it to the test.
