Havasu Canyon
Has anyone hike Havasu below Mooney falls? It is a 14 mile day hike to the Colorado & back, with MANY stream crossings. I'm interested in what foot gear has been used & what condition your dogs were in at the end of the day (there's still another 10 miles uphill to the rim - with pack).

Cake Hike, Pretty too
This hike is so easy my 3 and 5 year old nephews are doing it in 2 months... Seriously!

p.s I wouldn't bring my dog, the reservation dogs will tear them up.

1. it's a dayhike. How heavy can your pack be?

2. I hiked out with a hangover, how hard could it be?

3. ' It is a 14 mile day hike to the Colorado & back, with MANY stream crossings' -that's why they invented bridges.

4. People who ask too many damn questions before an adventure annoy me.

5. Just go. This is such a walk in the park you will be embarrassed you even asked. There's a store at the bottom if you forgot something (and a school and a post office).. and a motel if you decide to spend the night.

Yes the hike from the rim to the village of Supai (where the store & post office are)is easy with a light load - I've done it twice with light & heavy loads, & dozens of people do it every week, but I am interested in the 7 miles BELOW the campground & Mooney Falls, where the trail no longer accomodates horses & creek crossings occur every 1/2 mile or so. Some in our party are concerned that hiking all day with wet feet will guarantee lots of blisters.

hmm. Ok, speaking from experience, I have hiked all day in a creek, several times. Tip: don't wear Tevas wear hiking boots (hiking in Tevas you are GUARANTEED TO GET GET BLISTERS). 2. Let your hiking boots get wet. 3. Don't worry about it. They dry out fast. As long as you're doing this hike in the spring/summer/fall, you'll be fine. As far as the mileage goes, you should know what you & your folks are capable of.

p.s. Don't bring your dog. There is rock climbing below Mooney Falls that your dog will not be able to handle. Unless he/she is small enough to fit in your pack and not freak. Also, it's mean to hike with a dog through 'several stream crossings.' They slip on the rocks and get all tore up.

I have a picture somewhere... I'll try to post it. Saying it does not accomodate horses is an understatement. It is a 250' cliff to get under the falls which you must CLIMB. Small children and elderly people have turned back at this point. Unless your dog is really a mountain goat, you will have to carry him down this and that will be a bit tricky since in some places you have to hold onto the rope with both hands to descend it.

I have only hiked that lower part up from the river a few miles. It was not long after that huge flood and all the trees were torn out and there were huge piles of sticks and debris. It was rough going but may be better now--that was maybe 15 years ago.

I suggest good tennis shoes--they dry out faster. Try them on a wet surface before you leave home--some brands have real slippery soles.

A Havasu story: It was in the days of cotton socks and we went down there. 1980? It was hot and at the first sign of water near the village we went in clothes and shoes and all. By the time we reached the campground and took the shoes off the bottoms of my feets looked like the skin had separated--the whole thing. Panic!! They were OK when they dried out.
