Sunshine - Read "Atlas Shrugged". If you want more, then read "The Fountainhead".

Her book, "Anthem" was popular in high school because it was one of the few 100 page book you could read for a quick book report.

Efficient.
Lol. that's how I came to read Les Miserables in HS. A little over 1500 pages...thought I'd just get that 1500 page requirement over in one book, thus only 1 report to write!

Phil, I am reading Atlas Shrugged. I just don't get it (yet)

“The upper classes are…a nation’s past; the middle class is its future.”

Ayn Rand.

Objectivism- Philosophy: One of several doctrines holding that all reality is objective and external to the mind and that knowledge is reliably based on observed objects and events.

Existentialism- Philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile and indifferent universe, regards human existence an unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one’s acts.

People sometimes confuse Objectivism with Existentialism.

Rand was an atheist who believed that the highest good was the potential for human achievement.

Ayn’s philosophy says that there are “prime movers” (creators who produce ideas and innovation), “second-handers” (people who live off of the creators), and people who actively seek to destroy “prime movers.”

In The Fountainhead, Howard Roark is a “prime mover.” Elsworth Toohey seeks to destroy his works. The premise of Atlas Shrugged is to show what happens when the world’s “prime movers” go on strike. In fact, The Strike, was Rand’s working title for Atlas Shrugged. In real life, the so-called “rich” pay 80% of the taxes in this country. They contribute the most and benefit the least from social programs that government creates. People who produce (such as Bill Gates) are “prime movers”, politicians who talk about tax give-aways for the rich, evil big business, and the moral superiority of “the working man”, are out to enslave and destroy the people on who’s backs most of society rides. Why does Rand feel that these people want to enslave and destroy these “prime movers”? You’ll have to read more Ayn Rand.

One of Rand’s main points, in Atlas Shrugged, is shown in Chapter II, The Aristocracy of Pull (page 410 in my book). At a party, Francisco d’Anconia responds to Bertram Scudder (and James Taggart’s) contention that “money is the root of all evil.” It’s a four-page soliloquy that ends with a woman declaring that, even though she can’t dispute his points, she doesn’t agree with him because she doesn’t “feel” that he is right. “I don’t go by my head, but by my heart. You might be good at logic, but you’re heartless.” It’s classic Rand and describes the way many people deal with the world when confronted by logical argument.

John Galt also gives an excellent speech at the end of the story, Biz. It's a book worth trying to understand.

nice arc-

weird, I am exactly at that point in the book (the party)
I was starting to think this was a 'feel good' book - feel good about being selfish and capitalistic! It's funny how the bleeding heart liberals are portrayed as incompetant.

Ok, Phil

Oh, they are not incompetent, Biz. You don't give them enough credit if you assume that. If you ever get a chance to read The Fountainhead, Elsworth Toohey (the epitome of bleeding heart liberal) is portrayed as anything but incompetent. To think of the "social do-gooders" in Rand's books as incompetent would be to discount their effect on society. In real life, that effect is profound and can be seen in the behavior of many people. One of my favorite examples is the real life example of people believing in the idea of "tax give-aways for the rich." If I hear someone spout this lie, I walk the other way. Many people listen to that trash and start to resent successful people.
