Anybody Make Gear??View Messages“Does anybody here actually work for a company that builds gear? What a cool job. I am thinking about switching careers.” 11:24:54 AM 2/17/02 “I don't work for company but I did make my own polar fleece sleeping bag liner.” 11:44:14 AM 2/17/02 “I made a nice bong out of a platypus water bottle” 11:49:17 AM 2/17/02 “Hmm. I'm not sure if a bong is considered gear. But OK. Nobody works for Raichle or Vasque or Columbia or Gortex? Patagonia is down here in my neck of the woods...I guess if you worked for a gear company you'd be too biased to post on the gear threads.” 11:55:41 AM 2/17/02 “I am going to make a small pouch for rehydrating food in. I am going to layer a silver reflective material, thin foam, and then light fleece, sew it into a sheet and then cut the pattern from this. The pouch will have a velcro closure. I taped up a prototype bag of the silver stuff and it made a difference in the heat it held in. I think it should work well.” 11:56:08 AM 2/17/02 12:30:52 PM 2/17/02 Walking Sticks- “I make a few custom walking sticks from time to time-very simple really-Wm233 full round-paint/stain and leather straps.I have added camera mounts and decorative finials. I also would love to sell in the gear industry, adventure travel would be cool too.” 12:50:24 PM 2/17/02 “sounds cool nigal, let us know how it turns out. So do you put your banana chips in there and just let em rehydrate for a few minutes or what? Does this eliminate the need for a stove?” 1:04:26 PM 2/17/02 “i've made gear for years.it takes alot of time to design and size things and sometimes material is hard to find, but the results are well worth the bother.its' great to hike with mostly stuff you've made.sleeping bags, packs, tents tarps,stoves,clothes---everything except socks and shoes.cliff” 1:12:03 PM 2/17/02 “Hey Josh, are sure you don't use those walking sticks for butt plugs you sissy faggot Tennessee hick Is your mother and sister the same person” 1:14:13 PM 2/17/02 “Swinger - get a life, you loser. It's obvious you haven't been laid in a very long time. Perhaps your mom could lend her services to you to remedy the situation. Your not welcome here. Now leave and don't come back.” 1:22:42 PM 2/17/02 “I get laid plenty Your mom just left when you see her ask her if she gives a group discount” 1:37:41 PM 2/17/02 “Sorry guys- I pissed IT off.” 5:08:57 PM 2/17/02 “"Does this eliminate the need for a stove?" No, it just makes it rehydrate a bit faster and it keeps it hot longer. I do a lot of baggie cooking. I usually stick the food in the baggie in my hat but fate tells me that sooner or later somethin' bad'll happen doing that. HAHA!” 5:09:24 PM 2/17/02 “Sgt Rock- Nice site. But I don't have a cat and I don't drink V8. Therefore, I think I will make a jalapeno can stove” 5:26:54 PM 2/17/02 Making one now “I'm making a Cat Stove now. This guy from Israel that intends to thru-hike the AT this summer and wanted a super light alcohol stove ordered one. Nice to think of this stove doing the trail ahead of me.” 5:38:20 PM 2/17/02 “I used to be able to get my hands on Alcohol, punctilious which is better for you because it contains no methanol when I worked in a lab. I have never seen it anywhere else though. Maybe you can order it from a chemical supplier? guess I will have to use the nasty stuff” 5:48:38 PM 2/17/02 “my company doesn't build gear, but it is a wire hardware mfg (cotter pins, eyebolts, etc.).I like to make my own stuff, and some of the things I can make from scrap material can work out pretty good,, one that works well that others can do is the tent staple,, instead of using stakes, take a wire coathanger, cut the wire just inside of the hook, then cut again in the middle of the rest, bend the two halves into u shape, and file or grind the points on an angle,, way more holding power than stakes supplied with tents, and you can double them up for even more holding power.” 7:29:36 PM 2/17/02 “my company doesn't build gear, but it is a wire hardware mfg (cotter pins, eyebolts, etc.).I like to make my own stuff, and some of the things I can make from scrap material can work out pretty good,, one that works well that others can do is the tent staple,, instead of using stakes, take a wire coathanger, cut the wire just inside of the hook, then cut again in the middle of the rest, bend the two halves into u shape, and file or grind the points on an angle,, way more holding power than stakes supplied with tents, and you can double them up for even more holding power.” 7:29:47 PM 2/17/02 “my company doesn't build gear, but it is a wire hardware mfg (cotter pins, eyebolts, etc.).I like to make my own stuff, and some of the things I can make from scrap material can work out pretty good,, one that works well that others can do is the tent staple,, instead of using stakes, take a wire coathanger, cut the wire just inside of the hook, then cut again in the middle of the rest, bend the two halves into u shape, and file or grind the points on an angle,, way more holding power than stakes supplied with tents, and you can double them up for even more holding power.” 7:30:01 PM 2/17/02 tent staple “my company doesn't build gear, but it is a wire hardware mfg (cotter pins, eyebolts, etc.).I like to make my own stuff, and some of the things I can make from scrap material can work out pretty good,, one that works well that others can do is the tent staple,, instead of using stakes, take a wire coathanger, cut the wire just inside of the hook, then cut again in the middle of the rest, bend the two halves into u shape, and file or grind the points on an angle,, way more holding power than stakes supplied with tents, and you can double them up for even more holding power.” 7:30:38 PM 2/17/02 “what the heck happened,, sorry folks that wasn't intentional” 7:33:50 PM 2/17/02 “Stop that!!!” 7:48:51 PM 2/17/02 “Stop that!!!” 7:48:56 PM 2/17/02 “Stop that!!!” 7:49:00 PM 2/17/02 “OOPS!!!” 7:49:11 PM 2/17/02 “OOPS!!!” 7:49:17 PM 2/17/02 “Sorry!!!” 7:49:26 PM 2/17/02 “Sorry!!!” 7:49:30 PM 2/17/02 “DOH!!!” 7:49:38 PM 2/17/02 “DOH!!!” 7:49:42 PM 2/17/02 “DOH!!!” 7:49:45 PM 2/17/02 Biz “I think you have to be a representative of a licensed lab to order pure ethanol. The reason they add trace methanol to regular ethanol is to keep people from drinking it or using it to make bootleg alcohol (that's what bootleg gin was).” 7:41:34 AM 2/18/02 “Just go to the licker store and buy a gallon of Everclear if you want pure ethanol.” 8:12:13 AM 2/18/02 I thought this was cool! “Birch and Sass made a pretty cool thing that I noticed on the Isle Royale trip, which I just plagerized. They took a cheap plastic insulated coffee mug, cut the handle off it, and replaced it with a big ole' D-Ring Biner. They taped the biner to the cup with duct tape, then put some gear stickers over the duct tape for some eye candy. The biner clips directly onto a cinch strap, and doubles as a handle, and could be used in emergencies. Pretty sweet! Another one. I smoke, and use an old altoids tin as an ashtray.” 6:14:20 PM 11/21/03 “I think RichB makes great gear I just wish I could buy some of his stuff. 8)” 6:18:19 PM 11/21/03 “That's pretty good BB. I've got this coffee press that I love using, but it's got no handle. This is perfect.” 6:30:01 PM 11/21/03 “I made my own silnylon tarp. Also, lots of silnylon stuff sacks. I made my own GVP4 backpack. It's really great to have gear that is exactly what you want, with pockets where you want. It's all I use on multiday trips. It cost me about $35-$40. The tarp has loops exactly where I need them, too. It took a long time to make, but saved me a ton. I love this tarp, it has kept me dry during windy and stormy weather. It cost $35. I made an alcohol stove out of tomato paste cans that I love, but seldom carry because I usually carry esbit. But that little alcohol stove is still my favorite!” 9:02:15 PM 11/21/03 “Cool Cindy Lu! I think making gear is the final chapter of a gear junkie's life cycle. With all the innovative things I've seen from TT'rs, I'm tempted to start a gear manufacturing company!” 9:20:18 PM 11/21/03 “nah. I just made my own because I could make it the way I want. I wasn't happy paying a lot of money for something that wasn't quite what I wanted. Although I have to admit there's quite a bit of satisfaction in making something myself, and knowing no one else has one quite like it. I also made a sleeping bag sack, sort of a bivy (not waterproof, but it does keep the dew off) out of light nylon, with silnylon on the bottom, that holds my z-rest and covers my sleeping bag and keeps it clean and serves as a groundcloth. I only use it car camping, though. It weighs too much for not being rainproof.” 9:35:10 PM 11/21/03 “I have made some stuff. Most of the time the only reason that I have made it is because, I forgot it. Mainly spoons and sporks. But I did make a coffee cups that I have kept out of a tin can. I can't throw it away because it just looks to cool I think.” 9:37:11 PM 11/21/03 “LOL - most car campers I know have 220# 3,000 sq. ft. tents. You must scare them with a bivy! Hell, a goretex one would prolly send em' to the insane asylum!” 9:37:51 PM 11/21/03 “Using homemade gear is like tying your own flies for fly fishing. I can catch fish with store bought flies, but it's so much more fun to catch them with my own creations. The allure of making gear to me is getting custom gear with perfect fit, devoid of useless features and marketing gimmicks. Custom made gear cannot be beat, but it comes with a price. It takes a lot of time to make gear and it isn't always cheap. Quality fabrics and notions bought at the retail level aren't cheap. Projects that labor intensive, but don't use much fabric are where you will save the most money. A project like making a tent will cost you because it uses so much fabric. Big companies buy it for a small fraction of what you pay so on a project like this you may not save much if anything, but you will have exactly what you want. That's the part I like.” 6:34:15 AM 11/23/03 Hey Richb. “How has that backpack that you made been working? 8)” 8:24:29 AM 11/23/03 “okay...ignorant question.... how do you "make" flies??? You mean you just kill them and put them on a hook? or do you flavor them... naaa...i shouldn't even submit this question... Yeah I have NO, and I mean NO idea about fly fishing...” 9:08:34 AM 11/23/03 “LOL @ Gemini! You should watch "A River Runs Through It". Really neat fly fishing scenes, and a damn good movie to boot. And... it has Brad Pitt (you ladies tend to love that lad). RichB's explanation also seems to describe homebrewed beer and homemade jerky. I love doing those things, so I'm going to have to start making my own gear here soon.” 9:12:04 AM 11/23/03 “Beware Artex, it can be addictive! Poor G00SE, everything that was on my Christmas list I've managed to figure out how to make myself. LOL!” 9:56:58 AM 11/23/03 “Richb makes awesome packs!” 10:46:42 AM 11/23/03 “funny...a river runs through...it's on right now. I think I'll watch it. Have never seen it. Maybe I'll learn something.” 11:37:58 AM 11/23/03 “Good flick.” 11:40:15 AM 11/23/03
