“Mike, the homemade packs have been working great. I've only used the silnylon pack for that one hike on the Loyalsock Trail a few weeks ago. It handled 37 pounds easily and for trail hiking the silnylon is durable enough. I was careful about low hanging branches though. For bushwhacking, it's possible that a sharp stick can stab right through it and into some gear inside, like a tent or jacket, so that why I wouldn't use it for a trip that involved that kind of hiking. I've been using the green packcloth 3500 c.i. model much more, but only for gear intensive dayhikes while fishing. It feels almost the same since it uses the identical hipbelt and shoulder straps. It's definitely one of my favorite packs.
Gemini, flies used in fishing are imitations using fur and feathers tied to fish hooks with thread. You can imitate just about any insect with the right combination of feathers and fur. It's an art and a science to imitate aquatic insects that will catch fish.”

“I changed the straps on my camera & GPS case from belt to shoulder straps on my pack. I like having them where it is handy. I've made a lot of bivy sacks to easily grab different things in my pack. Eventually I made so many things, I broke the wife's seewing machine as it couldn't handle the heavy material. I'm not allowed to touch the new one.”

“I'm scaling the G4 pack down to fit me daughter.Got it almost finished and found the hip straps to long for her 26" waist.No biggy, I've become an expert with the seam ripper.
I've made sleeping bags,tents packs,jackets and stuff of all kinds for 30 years.Sometimes I buy enough to get wholesail prices which is considerable with things like down and finer fabrics.”

“I do have a pattern for gators if you want it. I was just going to give it to the goodwill with other things. There are a line of patterns called "Green Pepper" designs. I bought it at JoAnn Fabrics, but I am sure there are others. Look in a search for outdoor fabrics, and they usually have them there too.”

“I made a summer sleeping bag. It is mummy style sewn up to the hip area. I made it out of a velour twin size blanket. Cost $9.99. And it works, it kept me warm at the Ocala Recon hike.

I will be trying a tent-tarp of my own design next. I hope it will be ready for Ocala in Feb.”

“I made a cat food/dog food can alcohol stove. Using a grease cup from Wal Mart for my pot, it'll hold three cups water when full to the brim and the stove fits inside it along with the pot stand. Compared to my old cook pot and Whisperlite the weight is cut down to about 1/8 of the old weight.”
