Spam- I've got that pack. It's only been used a half a dozen times. It's a good pack, it just doesn't fit me very well. Woulda sold ya mine for less. You got a good deal though. IMO, you made a good choice.

my dog has
his own mountain smith pack...he loves it and it fits him perfectly. He paid a lot less than you did, so he says you paid too much.

The Mountainsmith Chimera always dug into my shoulders, except for dayhiking. It wasn't really painful, so I dealt with it. Anything over 30 lbs was uncomfortable. I was constantly tightening the straps. They don't seem to stay tight for long. I used this pack from about April - October. The top pouch was ripping at the seams, so I called Backcountry Gear (where I bought it) and they told me to call Mountainsmith. I'll see what they say.

I just got a Kelty Flight, and with 31 lbs it was pretty comfortable.

nekkid, I had the honor of meeting one of your breed earlier tonight. A man of 65 years old just finished the AT and we got to carrying on about how he's got his eye on the PCT. Incredible. He had LOTS of interesting and NEW ideas about ultralight backpacking.

Snow Nymph- Glad your Flight pack is working out for you. You inspire me to give it another go.

I recently picked up a Mountainsmith "Day" model lumbar pack at almost half off at one of my area gear shops -- last of the 2001 stock. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it has some nice features. 1,000ci for 1# 11oz., with two big mesh pockets. Has me wondering what I can manage in that size (will I start eyeing sil-tarps and silk bag liners?).

I'll let you know if it has any durability issues.

tekapo, please resurrect an ultralight thread, or start a new one, and tell us what ideas your friend has...

I just bought a 6,000 ci Mountainsmith Pack from Campmor - $139.00. It sounds too good to be true, so I hope I'm not getting ripped off. I've been looking for a great deal on a pack for 2 years becuase my Kelty Ute is just wearin' out. I'll let ya'll know how it is when I get it.

I have a 1988 Mountainsmith Frostfire II 4500 c.i. I modified the hip belt by installing a plastic stiffner and changed the shoulder straps. It can carry 40lbs pretty well now. Before that the hipbelt used to sag at 30lbs. I like the pack now and it weighs only 4 lbs. and a few ounces. Back then Mountainsmith's workmanship and materials weren't that good, but I think they've improved now. I've had to sew mine at the seams and a few other places too. The fabric is kind of cheesy, but that's why the pack is light I guess.

My Mtnsmith Chimera is ripped at the seams (top pouch) so one of these days I'll send it in. I got it early last season and used it for dayhikes and backpacking.

I've got a couple Mountainsmith packs, including a Frostfire..love em..the only modification I made to them was to switch to shoulder straps made by Gregory (I have shoulder problems) ....I think you'll be pleased with your pack.

I got the pack today - Circuit 6,000 ci. I really like the design and fit so far. I hope it feels good on the trail too.

There is nothing like a new pack to make me want to get out there again, soon!

Anyone see good deals on the Mountainlight packs (esp. Auspex)?

Pekka: I have an older version of that lumbar pack. It's about 10 years old and has seen very extensive use. I got the foam waist belt insert as I didn't feel I was getting enough support just from the cloth belt alone. It's a great lumbar pack and should serve you well for many years.
