Yet another Wal-Mart superstore is opening (tomorrow)...geez, there's already three of 'em within 10 miles of here, and another three that are within 35-40 miles.

Just wait 'til they start selling cars and cheeseburgers! What I hate to see is all the Mom & Pop places getting stomped. You can't hardly find a normal hardware store anywhere anymore. You have to go to a Big Box and hike around for half an hour.

O Well.

Where have I seen those before... ? Huge cubes that fly around and seem to 'materialize' overnight?

vyx,
There must be a La Quinta then too, right?

You know what La Quinta means don't you?

It means "Next To Denny's"

We have two Walgreens here in Flagstaff now. The last Mom and Pop drugstore here died about 15 years ago. We lost our really good downtown bookstore this year--I was sad to see that one go. They had a fantastic selection of Canyon stuff and local things. We still have one really good used bookstore that is hanging on--I hope they last.

Those used and out-of-print bookstores are a real treasure, aren't they?

REI plans on adding 5 stores per year for the indefinite future. REI is getting like Walmart.

Are they overexpanding their niche market?

Never buy Walmart CDs or rent Blockbuster videos. They're censored and they don't even tell you.

dilemma...
ok so here it is in a nutshell...
I love to support local everything... and REI is a good store, Target is fun too... Denny's is ok as a local "diner"... I wanna do the right thing, but I think these chain stores are filling in the gaps they were missing...

oh yeah, Chief I think you are right... I think La Quinta means next to Denny's!

The "Super Wal-Mart" is going to put in gas pumps now. Evidence shows that they will put most of the independants out of business by charging less than cost. Then, when the independants are gone, there goes the price, right back where it was before.

I support the locals, and refuse to go to there unless I have to. Besides, the frickin' place is way too big to find anything.

yeah, the censored CDs are the best...once my brother bought an Eminem CD from Walmart, and practically half the words were scrambled or silenced altogether. it was pretty funny! needless to say, he returned it posthaste.

hey Chief, i just saw that you and Aero posted on the Montanapolooza thread, but i can't read the second page! censorship!! ;-) anyone else having that prob?

Walgreens was going to build on the edge of downtown Rhinelander until the city held fast on restrictions on how the parking lot traffic would connect with a busy intersection -- then they decided to go somewhere else. Now a bank is building on the lot. Our WalMart is going super-size, Home Depot came last summer, a Menards is going up on the north side of town, open in spring. Rhinelander has been earmarked the commercial hub of the Northwoods by developers. On the other hand, the Wendy's in the ShopKo plaza went out of business. Just one too many burger joints, I guess. Still surviving with a McD, BK and Hardee's, along with Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Little Caeser's. Not bad for a town of 8,000. We get shoppers from as much as 75-100 miles away.

I posted this on the wine thread but I think it's so funny that I'll post it here too. "World Championship Wriesling" just had me in tears.

BENTONVILLE, ARK (AP) - Some Wal-Mart customers soon will be able to sample a new discount item -- Wal-Mart's own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with E&J Gallo Winery of Modesto, Calif., to produce the spirits at an affordable price; in the $6-8 range.

While wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of Wal-Mart brand wine into their shopping carts, there is a market for inexpensive wine, said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. She said: "The right name is important."

So, with that in mind, here are the top 12 suggested names for Wal-Mart
Wine:

12. Chateau Traileur Doublewide
11. White Trashfindel
10. Big Red Gulp
9. Grape Expectations
8. Domaine Wal-Mart "Merde du Pays"
7. NASCARbernet
6. Chef Boyardeaux
5. Peanut Noir
4. Chateau des Moines
3. I Can't Believe It's Not Vinegar!
2. World Championship Wriesling

And the number 1 name for Wal-Mart Wine...
1. Nasti Spumante

This is their tactic in all things. Why is it that Microsoft gets slapped with an anti-trust suit for unfair business practices but Walmart goes on merrily and untouched? I know someone who's pet store got sunk by our 'local' Walmart. Who ever heard of a lifetime guarentee on fish, anyway? I can't beleive people actually fell for that. I hope they weren't surprised that our Walmart store abruptly stopped honoring it the day after the pet store closed. This town is full of suckers. Quick, somebody sell them a bridge. I think they're in the market and ready to buy!

Interesting thread. We hate big boxes yet the whole nation supports them. I remember a case years ago where Safeway was taken to court for selling below cost until the competition folded. They got slapped but I don't think it hurt them much.

When we travel we are dissapointed that the whole country has become so homogenized. We do seek out local restaurants that have several cars in the parking lot--often the food is good or at least different than the chains.

We now have a Walmart with a Lowes across the street and a Home Depot just opened about a third of a mile down the road. Now I hear that a Meyers is about to open next to the Lowes. Now tell me, do we really need this much retail? There are places all ready going under and all they do is build more.
