Any recommended itineraries
Hello,

I may have a ride to and from the park(s) for a 5-6 day trip in Sequoia/Kings Canyon.

I've never been to those parks except for dayhiking Whitney.

Can anyone recommend a 5-6 day loop or point to point route that starts and finishes on Hwy 180 or 198. Pace of about 14-17 miles per day. Would love to do the HST, but impossible to get back to Bar Area from. Will be in 3rd week of July.

Thanks in advance,

Rae Lakes Loop ( 46 miles )
Starts and finishes at roads end ( Cedar Grove,KCNP) Very beautiful country but it's a very busy trail, so make reservations now.
also...bear canisters are required.
180 will take you there.

One important question: are you comfortable with off-trail hiking?

The Monarch Divide (access from the end of 180) lends itself to any number of fairly strenuous 5- or 6-day loops, and it's stunning country...without the enormous crowds on the Rae Lakes Loop. You have a pretty stiff climb (5,000') to get anywhere, but once you accomplish that there are all sorts of lakes you can visit--especially if you're comfortable with off-trail hiking.

Lots of options off 168--it's out of SeKi, but still has a lot of great country. From Courtwright Reservoir, you can go up to Disappointment Lake or Blackcap Basin. From Wishon Reservoir, you can do an out-and-back-with a layover day into Eponymous Valley, which is named after me. ;-) It's a magical place, like Yosemite without the crowds. From Florence Lake you can do any number of loops into the LeConte Divide country, or Goddard Canyon, or up towards Marie Lakes. From Lake Edison you can do some nice loops either north, over the Silver Divide, or south, into the Bear Lakes area.

Thanks
Thanks. The link to the backcountry trails at the NPS website was very helpful.

How much creek fording is there in mid July throughout the region?
