Hello all Michigan Backpackers.

“Last year, there was a report of a bear chasing a hiker near the Marilla trailhead, which is just north of the Manistee River Loop trail.”

“Birch's uncle has a farm in Clair. There was a sow and cub on his property and in the area for months a year or so ago. That's only two hours from Detroit!”

“I read an article in the local paper two years ago about a bear den just west of Baldwin that the DNR was keeping tabs on. I've heard of bear sightings up around Marilla, like laqtis said, but not this far south on the NCT.”

“There are a few around the lower peninsula, and bear hunting season is open in some of the areas with quite a few successful hunters. The Mesick area is home to enough bears that they are seen in back yards, the Evart area (near Clare) has some, and last year a bear was seen near Nordhouse Dunes (eventually hit by a car) and another northeast of Ludington. Lake County (Baldwin) has so much public land that the bears can set up housekeeping there comfortably.”

“We had a black bear hit & killed on the freeway near my home, last fall I think. Midland, Mi, an hour N of Detroit.”

“I have planned a snowshoe backpacking trip to do the Manistee River trail on 2-1 to 2-2 go get info on the TT trip page everyone is welcome for this trip.

“I have been thinking that there is going to be more snow comming that way so when I get back from the Florida Trail Talk trip I am going to plan another snowshoe backpacking trip on the NCT.I will post all the info on the trip planner.

The dates will be 2-15 to 2-16.
