“** Count To 10, Then Read This Keep a close eye on the guy in the next cubicle. If his download times out because of network congestion, you could be in for some serious trouble. So says a new study measuring "Web rage," or violence caused by Internet-related frustration, performed by U.K.-based polling firm Market & Opinion Research International. The poll found that more than half of all Internet users experience Net frustration on a weekly basis, and one out of 10 users deal with it daily. When people get mad at the Internet, they take out their anger in the real world. Seven percent of respondents say they hit their equipment. Four percent pound on their desks. And 2% say they've become so upset they've hit the person who sits next to them. Surfers say that slow-loading Web sites are the biggest cause of irritation, followed by unhelpful help buttons and sites that require users to enter personal details before gaining access. But there may be more to Web rage than just aggravating downloads, says Mark Gorkin, an expert on workplace stress and operator of StressDoc.com. "I think this is a sign more of the transitory and vulnerable nature of the workplace today and the sense that people are feeling like they're just pawns," he says. "This is how the anger gets worked out, through attacking computers or even other workers." Gorkin says management needs to work harder to repair frazzled nerves and rebuild worker confidence. In the meantime, raging Web surfers should take some time away from the keyboard. "Don't shortchange yourself when it comes to physical exercise," he says. "If you're feeling that stressed, get away, walk around for a while." David M. I just can't imagine getting that ticked off over anything that unimportant. Jeez, I just go do something else while I'm waiting on a download. IT'S ONLY A COMPUTER!!!” 8:24:53 AM 2/20/02 “anyone ever heard of a Wang? i have to use one at work...it was made in like 1980--literally!! talk about slow going! the screen and the keyboard are attached, LOL! now THAT, i consider throwing out the window every day. they've been talking about putting the database on disk for the whole time i've been here, and it's now "almost ready!" hehe.” 8:49:23 AM 2/20/02 “Have the new "Terms of Participation" so tongue-tied everyone that a post like lyra's can just sit there for hours without the obvious joke?” 10:21:23 AM 2/20/02 “LMAO!!!! would you believe, i've never even thought of it like that?!? what is the world coming to...i might as well jump out the window myself, now! ;-)” 10:37:05 AM 2/20/02 “Don't forget your parachute! As a matter of fact, the first computer I ever messed with was a Wang... can't reemember the model. That was 1974. It had TELETYPE terminals and PAPER TAPE as a long-term storage medium. Pretty Scary.” 10:51:39 AM 2/20/02 “There was an article in the paper the other day. Apparently some woman in her 30's beat up some woman in her 50's because the older woman had gone through the 12 item express lane at the grocery store with 13 items. Some folk done loss their brains. They might need to get out more, Tilt, true. But would you want someone like that out on the trail with you?” 10:59:17 AM 2/20/02 “"If you're feeling that stressed, get away, walk around for a while."
