“NOBLE, Georgia (CNN) -- Investigators searching with a backhoe unearthed the remains of five more people Tuesday afternoon from an area near the home of the operator of a crematory, who has been implicated in the dumping of as many as 200 bodies in nearby woods.

Milton "Buddy" Nix, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said the five bodies were found in dirt mounds discovered near the home of Ray Brent Marsh, 28.

Earlier in the day, a coffin containing a body described as "putrefied" was found behind the house, next to a lake.”

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Republican strategist Ralph Reed offered to help Enron Corp. advance its goal of deregulating electricity markets, weeks before the 2000 presidential election, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

"We are a loyal member of your team and are prepared to do whatever fits your strategic plan," Reed wrote to the now-bankrupt corporation in an October 23, 2000, memo obtained by the Post.

"In public policy it matters less who has the best arguments and more who gets heard -- and by whom," the Post quoted the memo as saying.

The newspaper said Reed offered to mobilize his lobbying network to influence favorable press coverage for legislative policies championed by Enron, and proposed a $380,000 fee for his services.

Enron never finalized Reed's lobbying proposal, said Tim Phillips, vice president of Century Strategies, Reed's Atlanta, Georgia-based consulting firm. The firm's relationship with Enron ended in October 2001 because of a "mutual agreement," Phillips said. The Post said Reed did not return telephone calls for comment.

The White House said in January that Karl Rove, a senior adviser to President Bush, recommended Reed to Enron for a consulting contract at the time Bush was considering a run for president.

Reed is the former executive director of the Christian Coalition and now is chairman of the Georgia Republican Party.”

“Pledging to keep working to prevent sexual abuse by priests, the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed regret to children victimized in the past.

"We continue to apologize to the victims and to their parents and their loved ones for this failure in our pastoral responsibilities," Bishop Wilton Gregory said in a written statement Tuesday.

The remarks were a response to troubles in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, where Cardinal Bernard Law has admitted he knew in 1984 that a priest had molested children, yet approved the priest's transfer to another parish and stayed publicly silent about the abuse.

More than 130 people have come forward claiming the former Rev. John Geoghan fondled or raped them between 1962 and 1995, and Geoghan has been convicted in one criminal case. Law has apologized and has given Massachusetts prosecutors the names of more than 80 active and former priests accused of sexual abuse.”

“A retired Newark police officer killed his 22-year-old granddaughter at a relative's home Thursday, then shot and killed three others in the same coastal New Jersey neighborhood, police said.

John Mabie, 70, a resident of the neighborhood who retired from the Newark police force in 1978, was apprehended at his home shortly after going on the shooting spree, authorities said.

He was charged with four counts of murder, and Superior Court Judge Peter Giovine set bail at $3 million.”

“It's really sad. They said he was a retired police officer who had become a recluse after accidentally killing an 11-year-old kid when he hit him with his car when off duty. He'd covered all his windows with newspaper or cardboard and some neighbors thought he had died because they never saw him. Apparently he just snapped.”

“HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- Attorneys for Andrea Yates called their first witness Friday, using powerful testimony to help establish the Houston-area woman was legally insane when she drowned her five children in the family's bathtub.

Dr. Melissa Ferguson, the only defense witness to testify Friday, told the court Yates was "one of the sickest patients I had ever seen" when she interviewed the mother soon after the killings.

Ferguson, a psychiatrist at the Harris County Jail, was one of the first doctors to begin treating Yates in jail.

Describing fragments of the lengthy six-day interview process, Ferguson said Yates told her "I am Satan" and exhibited paranoia and delusions. Yates told her she felt her children were "tainted and doomed" to suffer in the fires of hell because their mother was evil.

The doctor also testified Yates had a stooped posture and a bleeding sore on her lip, and she was picking at the top of her head when Ferguson interviewed her in jail on the morning after the drownings.

At one point, Yates was agitated and "showed a lot of emotion," moaning and crying loudly, Ferguson said. She testified that Yates picked at the sore on her lip during the interview, causing it to bleed more.

Later, Ferguson said, Yates asked her for a razor so she could shave her head and reveal the "mark of the beast" -- 666 -- that she believed was on her scalp.”
