Awake or Asleep
due to the extremely warm weather across the eastcoast I was thinking about the bear population, if possibly it could effect there sleeping habits??

Bears will wake up and wander during warm spells. I've seen lots of tracks in the snow during January thaws here in western MA. I'd imagine they'll be pretty hungry!

I know in Alaska the black bears would come out during thaws. It was said they were kind of sluggish and stupified, though.

Where I live in northeast PA we have a very large black bear population. Bears are something I have to think about everyday because they are a very common sight. Many times I’ll just look out the window of my house and see one lumbering down the street or I could be working in the yard and see one walking through the woods within 100 feet of me, so with this mild winter I expected to see some bear activity but as of yet I have not seen a bear all winter. Regardless of the time of year I would always use the same precautions towards bears that I normally would.

I believe that female bears give birth to cubs during hibernation periods also....

In Arkansas bears don't necessarily hybernate at all. Sows with cubs will, but it is not unusual to see boars through -out the winter.

The warmer the area, the less time bears will hibernate. In southern New York state, they sometimes don't hibernate at all, or so I'm told.
