TD, don't get overly alarmed yet. There is still enough time for him to come to his sences and do something else other than law school.

j/k,,,,good luck to him wherever he goes. The school might be important in landing the first job,,,,but in my career, not one person was interested in where I went to school,,,,the only thing they were interested in was results. Of all the good lawyers I tried cases with or against, I could not discern that the school was the driving factor in their abilities.

There is a saying,,,,,,"You know what they call the people who had the highest and the lowest passing score on the bar exam?"

Lawyers.

Cool stuff!

Just be sure that he understands that when he graduates and get successful it is the job of the son to subsidize the backpacking lifestyle of the father. ;)

agreed, but... a Tennessee law degree will get you a job in Tennessee... but possibly little other places.

You should bombard him with the jokes, first, to see if he is tough enough to be a lawyer.
Congratulations.

Congrats!
TD-

My girlfriend went to Columbia undergrad and loved it...course, ya need to be a bit of a city slicker, or at least want to be in NYC to really enjoy it.

I'd have gone nuts...and almost did working in NYC for 5 years.

But, hey, its only 3 years...and then you can go where ever you want.

Not necessarily true if the child is smart, has a good record and grades, and the family has next to nothing in cash and income. You apply to schools with good endowments, willing to use their money to give extensive help, and with acceptance blind with regard to financial need.

One of my daughters graduated from Johns Hopkins in 2000. JHU put up 19,900 each year. Most of the rest came from grants, her earnings, and a few loans. The home state schools just sent bundles of loan applications. St. Lawrence Univ. offered just as good a deal as JHU, and then offered to up it, if the finances were holding my daughter back!

A Harvard spokesman said that any student accepted (blind with regard to financial need) would not have to worry about finishing four years there because of any financial problems!

My youngest daughter just started at a highly rated, mid-west college, in the class of 2005. Rounded figures are: Yearly cost 27,700 including all fees, etc. Extra are books, clothing, personal expenses and transportation. School contribution is 24,000, Perkins Grant 3,000, my cost 700. My daughter's earnings cover most of the rest. Loans required: None.

These days a high percentage of families receive some aid for their childrens' higher education.

Has he rented Paper Chase yet - how 'bout leagally blonde? That's awesome. Hmmm 3 years of exposure to the rich culture in art, music, food, ideas and people of NYC or a Jeffersonian, southern, pastoral, Appalachian experience at the others?

Truly a toss-up for me, particularly at that age.

Congrats to him!

The line my brother likes to quite is "Lawyers are simply sharks swimming in a sea of human misery."

What the heck, he is one!

(uh, you might want to think twice about committing a federal crime in the Southern District of Georgia)

If he ends up at Columbia, he'll have to buy at least one pair of shoes you know.

Must take after his mother! Kidding, kidding. Good work on a fine son. And good luck making the decision on which one he'll let teach him law.
