Fridge, the Rotarians have some new stuff they are distributing in the third world that added to silty water makes the silt sink to the bottom.

Of course, you will glow in the dark, but, hey wth, at least you wont be dealing with the silt.

I believe alum is used to get the particulates to bind and settle and have used this with success. I've also jsut used a ceramic cartridge filter and stopped to scrub it every half-liter after it clogged.

Best to find a water source with minimal particulates.

They have a Permafloc pc306 product that is NSF certified for drinking water. I would venture to guess that if you drink city water, you are drinking this chemical or something similar. The dosage rates are really small. It will probably be way less than 1 mg/liter so weight would not be a major factor. http://www.nalco.com/asp/applications/membrane_tech/products/pretreatment.asp

The simple solutiuon is to grow a mustache to strain the water through as you drink it.

Mike,

The FirstNeed water purifier I showed you at Masten now comes with an integral pre-filter on a tube. I bought my FirstNeed in 1988 and used it first glacial melt water with the old pre-filter and had no problems.

treat the water with CLO2 and then add drink mix if the color offends you.

I only drank that kind of water once but it was not gritty as I recall. Just not clear. We are talking small stuff here. Well in Alaska everything is big and associated with a grizzly bear so what do I know.

Just dont ask Bear Grylls for an advice.....there is no telling what kind of dumma$$ thing he would come up with.

Straining through the mustache sounds like a good idea though.

nem...um not being specific but I have enjoyed some "ladies" who could have been said to have been "strained through a mustache"....not really strained but the stache was there and they didn't seem to mind.

anyway...

if you want to get the silt out use can use an agent that clumps the contaminants. i used to use this stuff in my fish tanks and it works pretty well. pur makes a kit

several people posted this. i don't know much about the chemistry here. seems heavy to me but i am sure parted out the chemicals and process can be replicated in the field.
