Esbit with Grease potView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 11 of 11 messages posted.
“I seems to recall reading where, Birch I think it was, had trouble with a Walmart grease pot melting while using esbit. Anyone else had this problem? Any success stories out there?” 4:48:06 PM 2/27/02 “I use a cheap, Chinese pot set my wife got me. The only problem I have with it is that the bottom of the pot gets really nasty from the Esbit fuel. But it doesn't melt. It's fairly thin aluminum.” 5:02:55 PM 2/27/02 “I think you will be fine unless you let the pot boil dry (yeah right) or try to bake in the pot. The pot boils water just fine for me.” 5:03:49 PM 2/27/02 “I thought I'd give the grease pot a try on the upcoming Georgia trip and didn't want to get 50 miles from nowhere and have my pot melt. Because of the goo I though it would be a good idea to get a cheap pot to take the abuse. Thanks for the info.” 5:04:51 PM 2/27/02 “well if you are worried take two - the things are light enough to consider doing that” 5:14:50 PM 2/27/02 “Give it a good test before the trip. NEVER test gear on the trail!” 5:27:45 PM 2/27/02 “no guts no glory - bet you never knew there was glory in eating uncooked ramen (grin)” 5:48:58 PM 2/27/02 “My prob was that I was using the combo to bake muffins. It worked well,it just made a small hole. Good for boilin NOT baking.” 8:31:01 PM 2/27/02 “What exactly is a "grease pot"?” 7:08:03 AM 2/28/02 “Thanks for the info Birch. BS - it's an aluminum pot that Wal-Mart sales. It's about 1.1 qt, aluminum, has the word "grease" imprinted on the side, comes with a strainer, and cost $7. Alot of folks trying to shave weight use it.” 7:10:35 AM 2/28/02 “Thanks for the info. I've been using the cheap teflon coated 2 or 3 quart pots (with lid) from K-Mart (get 'em while they are still there). They are light and make clean up easy. Only cost about $10. Made by Mirro -- I think. I have a couple of the extra thin Mirro pots also. I've never had any problems with burning holes in them even with a coleman peak one stove, which I know gets hotter than the esbit. The problem must be in burning them dry.” 7:21:41 AM 2/28/02
