Coleman Peak Cobra Inyo Exponent ???????View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 31 of 31 messages posted.
“Well, I'm sorta confused... Is Coleman becoming "Exponent"? Is the Cobra being renamed to "Inyo"? And what is "Peak"? Or am I just totally confused???” 10:22:10 AM 2/28/02 “Hey Fritz, are you tent shopping?” 10:26:39 AM 2/28/02 “Perpetually. ;-) Well, all I have right now are two tents that are both like 15 or 20 years old and I'm not so confident that I'd want to sleep in them during a cold rainstorm. I have the 3-man dome that you saw, and the 1-person single wall that I took to Florida. I am looking for the right combination of weight, price, and "living space." (With my bad back I really need to be able to sit up.) Mostly I just need a 1-person but I am looking for a 2-person so my son and I can share, or when he's not there, I can bring my pack inside. At least I think that's what I want.” 10:41:26 AM 2/28/02 “I hear you. I like my little tent but it is a little crowded with all my gear in there. It is so easy to set up though. They make the same tent for two people, at 4 1/2 lbs packed (not min weight, like some people quote). It holds up well in heavy rain, is breezy for warmer weather, with overhang instead of full fly. You can rig a tarp over the front for sitting and cooking under in the rain. Rich posted pictures of it at his PictureTrail site, if you still have it. But for cold or really nasty weather, I like the Nallo 2 that RichB has. It is not as big a floor plan as the Backcountry 2, but has a full fly and is four season, for the same weight. The fly attaches to the tent so they are set up together, which is nice if it is raining. The poles don't slide in as easy, but once they are in, you stake it and are done. The Nallo 2 was on sale at Hilleberg.com and I got one so that I can go backpacking with my husband or daughters. We have a four person tent for when we all go, but it weighs a lot.” 10:58:36 AM 2/28/02 “Fritz, check out this link it’s the Exponent Inyo 2 for $76.95 http://www.efunctional.com/9810-806.html” 11:05:16 AM 2/28/02 “That Nallo is a sweet tent. If/when my wife and son (when he gets old enough) come with, I will be buying one. I have the Akto and that's a cool tent. That being said, the Inyo looks like a real cool set up. I like the design. One thing I don't like is little or no vestibule. You could get by, just using you pack cover, IMHO.....” 11:38:33 AM 2/28/02 “Is Coleman becoming "Exponent"? No, Exponent is a brand of Coleman that use to be called "Peak". It is just the higher end of Coleman and mostly for outdoor adventure gear vice car camping. Is the Cobra being renamed to "Inyo"? Yes, the color too has changes with the name. My Cobra has a green fly and the mesh is white where as the Inyo has yellow mesh and yellow fly. But that was all that I can see really changed. Do a thread search on the Cobra here on TT and there are a lot of people who use them and really like them.” 12:37:24 PM 2/28/02 “Actually sparky it's Peak 1 not Peak. I think this is what happened: Coleman, which owns Peak 1, was selling two versions of this tent, the Peak 1 "Cobra" and the Coleman "Mountaineer." Now Peak 1 (or at least part of Peak 1) has been renamed "Exponent" and some of the Peak 1 product line has been renamed under the Exponent brand, including this tent, now called the "Inyo 2". So the Peak 1 Cobra, Coleman Mountaineer, and the Exponent Inyo 2 are all the same tents, with minor variations from one brand or year to another. I don't think it is being distributed under the Peak 1 name any longer, not sure about the Coleman version.” 12:42:39 PM 2/28/02 “If you want to see a picture of a Cobra Tent email me at adkhiker2003@wmconnect.com and I will send you one. Sparky” 12:44:10 PM 2/28/02 “Coleman makes pretty good gear, from what I can tell. I have an older Peak 1 pack with the composite frame. Looked into getting one when I hear Walkindude speak highly of the line.....” 2:09:42 PM 2/28/02 “I have a Peak1 Apex II stove that has not failed me and is very durable. Also I have the Peak1 Cobra which is a good tent. As a matter of fact, I set it up today to get ready for my trip next week to make sure no surprises while I am out. I played with it and finally figured out how to tight up the netting... Both great products IMO. Sparky” 3:37:43 PM 2/28/02 “I have a question. How does a rectangular tent like the Inyo stay up with one pole? I think the NF Canyonland is the same way and I don't understand how it can have the strength to stand up to wind. I know you have to stake it, but I still don't get it.” 3:43:51 PM 2/28/02 “I love my Inyo II it's great tent. 8)” 4:06:14 PM 2/28/02 “Yes it does stand up with one pole with no problem. What stablizes it is that the pole passes through a sleeve and on each side of the tent is a clip that clips to the pole. The tention from it all keeps it up. If you add the fly into it (optional) it gets even more tighter and more sturdy. I never had mine collapes on me yet and it withstands rain and wind with not problem. If you saw it staked out with the fly it is pretty aerodynamic which I think helps it as well. Sparky” 4:49:54 PM 2/28/02 “Ya it is! It's going to rain this weekend so it will be put to the test but I would much rather have snow. 8)” 4:55:08 PM 2/28/02 “OH, It says it is a two man tent, well it all depends how close the two guys are. I fit in the tent perfectly and when I add my 12 year old son, we can sleep but it is tight. I prefer to use the tent as a one-man tent and it has plenty of room and your Backpack can fit under the fly. It has two doors for easy access, an overhead storage net and all the seams are factory taped. Like I said, I really like mine and it is very comfortable and light for just me and plenty of room to sit out a storm in the morning and just sip a cup of joe and listen to it rain.... ahhhh Sparky” 5:01:59 PM 2/28/02 “Thanks for the answer. Your image of sitting out a storm with a hot cup of coffee was inspiring.” 5:23:34 PM 2/28/02 “I still seam sealed the tent anyway! I like the gear area in the top of the tent that rocks! 8)” 5:31:00 PM 2/28/02 “Thanks, everyone, for all the good info. I did know about the other threads that discussed this tent recently, but I was confused about the name change(s.) Question about this Inyo 2: Coleman site says vestibule area is "9.8 sq ft each" -- what does that mean? Is there a vestibule on each side?” 7:31:55 PM 2/28/02 “Yes there are 2 on each side.” 7:33:48 PM 2/28/02 “Cool, four vestibules, thanks Mike! (Just funnin' ya, I know what you meant.)” 7:39:17 PM 2/28/02 “That would be neat. 8)” 7:43:20 PM 2/28/02 “The vestibules ar big enough to lay my backpack in and a pair of boots on top. The design of the fly is excellent... You can leave your gear on one side and exit the other... You can keep the back half covered and roll up the front portion and still get a view or leave it off and watch the night stars... Plenty of room to set a a stove to cook... Although I just heated water fro some coffee and that was it... Mike mine only came with one vestibule on each side ;) I too seam sealed the tent as well just in case but I did nothing to my fly and never had a problem. Just keep it taunt and you will not have any problems... and the overhead pocket does rock! Sparky” 8:47:57 PM 2/28/02 “It's like I say for the money this is by far one of the best tents for a 3 season backpacker.I have had alot of tents in my 11 years of backpacking and this is by far one of the best. 8)” 9:00:43 PM 2/28/02 “I got one and used it several times last summer. It worked fine, but I didn't have any foul weather. Vestibules are a little small, but nice having one on each side. It is tight for two people...nice solo tent. I think the Inyo II has a small design difference where the tent pole connects. Other than that the difference is the color. In some earlier threads several people offered tricks for keeping the rainfly off of the mesh tent to avoid condensation from getting into the tent. Do a searches on cobra, coleman, and exponent.” 10:20:57 PM 2/28/02 “Msilver has a dome style 2 man Coleman tent. Looks like a pretty nice tent and it's held up in rainy trips and some winter camping. You can always make your own vestibule out of a 6X8 tarp if you need one. If I was buying a tent and I wasn't in a hurry, I would wait for a sale since you can save a good amount of money. Seems like all of them go on sale eventually. Splash just got a great deal on her new Nallo 2.” 6:46:38 AM 3/01/02 “I'm buying the Peak One from everybody's favorite used gear dealer (bpbaby.) I will use it next weekend on the Delaware Water Gap to 206 trip. Thanks again everyone!” 8:48:55 AM 3/01/02 “I'm heading out this weekend on the OHT. They are calling for rain/snow. I'm taking my Inyo 2 out. I'll let you know how it performs.” 9:29:39 AM 3/01/02 9:53:43 AM 5/06/03 “The Inyo is a different tent. That's a good price on the Oryx 2 tent. The coleman outlet store near me has that tent not on sale for about $80. If it's on sale, about $60.” 10:43:49 AM 5/06/03 “The Exponent tents seem to be a good buy for the price and sales seem to be easy to find if you surf around. I have had some experience with weather since my original post and the Inyo 2 held up fine. I hope to buy a Stephenson Warmlite sometime to save a few pounds and get some extra space. But for now, the Inyo 2 is the tent I grab for most solo outings.” 12:22:02 PM 5/06/03
