Go-Lite must be doing ok. New Spring/Summer cat has a number of new items and has a bit more of a patagonia feel to it. Added new adventure race stuff. Still have 'ray-way' but adding many other items. Lots of new clothes too. No prices mentioned though.

For new lightweight pack must decide between GVP G4, Go-Lite Breeze or Go-Lite Land (new). Maybe for another thread...

I like the look of the speed pack but if I go ultralight I'll need a new trailname.

Such a quandry.

I'm also been eyeing that Land pack, but want to wait till I hear some first hand reviews of it.

Yeah fasttimes - I agree - as a matter of fact you are the 4th or 5th person to say that - hey rich gear junkies! - somebody buy one of these packs and give us the lowdown.

1st hand experince???
Anybody out there actually used any of the GoLite stuff? Curious to know what peoples' opinions are-- I like many of the ideals behind the company and their gear, but its'still too expensive for my po'blood.

GoGetYerself Some New Gear
I like where they are going with producing lightweight gear. But how's come they don't state the pack volumes?

Way too expensive!
I agree with CamelFluffer, the cost of GoLite gear is way to heavy. I would love to buy a lot of their products, but they are so freakin costly that I couldn't afford a single thing in that entire catalog. I've got shell pants that I bought at Marshals for less than $10.00 Golite = 70.00 - 150.00, Someone is gettin rich. Tarp I made for $20.00 ect. I hope that once they establish themselves that their prices drop.

I have not purchased anything from them yet either. If I did it would probably just be a pack, everything else (tarp, clothes) I think I can get at a comparable weight a functionality for less $$$.

I have a hard time swallowing those prices for ultralight gear. I was checking some of the ultralight sites and it did get me thinking about my own gear and what I could do to get my pack weight down. If nothing else it got me to re-evaluate some of the garbage I was hauling around.

I have found Patagonia to be one of the few companies who's prices reflect the quality of the product. this fact coupled with the subdued colors, the practicality of the product and the service quality makes them, IMHO, one of the best companies out there.

I don't have any Patagonia stuff but we buy some of their shorts and tees for my 11 year old son. I agree with Nigal that it seems to be top quality. I like Columbia Sportswear becuase the quality is high and the cost is reasonable. REI isn't all that bad either.

Steve Hiker touts the virtues of his go lite pack pretty regularly. I like the cave set up but downloaded Jardine's directions for making the same set-up before he pulled them off his website. I can make the tarp and net tent combo for about $80 in materials vs. the $260 it owuld cost to buy it from go lite. That will give me a 2lb set-up. I also downloaded instructions for the GVP G4 pack and am trying to coherse my mom, the seamstress, into making both the pack and the tarp/tent. If she says no, I guess it's time to bust out the sewing machine!

Patagonia pricing is incredible, but the stuff is good. Does anyone know when the Maine outlet has sales?

I picked up the GoLite day pack on REI-Outlet.com for less then $35. Right now they have the GoLite Fuzz 1 +40 Degree Sleep System on Closeout for $79. I've seen other GoLite stuff there, on closeout, in the past.

The pack is nice, I sure wouldn't have paid full price for it though. It's basicly just a large stuff sack with shoulder straps.

Did GL evr expect that sleep system to actually work, muchless sell well? I have a spring/summer/fall quilt and I can say with confedence that the quilt has to be just as wide as a sleeping bag unzipped in order to give proper coverage with few drafts. That Fur seams a fantasy in practicality.
Anyone use one?

I am planning to buy one of the packs. I'm changing to ultralight style of backpacking. A friend of my has one of the packs and raves about it. I don't know about purchasing the other Golite gear due to the cost. I think I can get gear other places for less $. I am tierd of carrying a big load and have finally managed to get my packweight right now to under 30 lbs.

"Lightweight" Is Relative Only To Heavy Items
Isn't the Go-Lite Daypack kind of like an oxymoron? I mean, with 7lb packs that'll carry 40-50lb loads, the idea of a lightweight pack this size cuts what, 5lbs from your back. However, a daypack will carry how much gear?... And how much weight?... Not much of either. Daypacks are already lightweight, imo.

These packs are not new and it's all been done before. Dan McHale has a full explanation on his website about it. I doubt there's anyone who has more knowledge about packs in the last 30 years than he does. He says he used to sell these same lightweight packs that are being called "new" years ago.

I bought the go-lite daypack for weekend trips (at 50% off REIoutlet). It weighs 2 lbs. less than my small internal. If I had been carrying 16 lbs, that's 1/8th of the weight.
It's well made and sturdy, but I can't get used to dumping it all out to get anything. My small internal is a panel loader, and much more convienent.

Big Coop

To me they are. I bought a Super Alpine II CM and supports weight like no other pack I ever tried, even ones I modified myself. I've tried it enough times to know I expend less energy carrying this pack than my Gregory Shasta. The reason is because of the strong frame and the way the pack becomes part of your body. You never have to fight unwanted movement of the load and the pack doesn't have to be super tight on your body to achieve this. I'm blown away by how well this pack works. I want to get a smaller McHale when I sell all my non-McHale packs.

I just got the new Spring/Summer Go-Lite catalog. They have some new packs that can carry heavier loads now. Has anyone seen the new packs. Also some nice new clothing and rain gear.

Oh yeah it is. Golite doesn't land on the clearance rack at REI. And their catalogue is very pretty. I still covet a lair or den or whatever it's called. I wish I could give Birch a pill (slip it in his food sneaky like) that would make him a gear whore overnight so he'd buy all the cool stuff I want and he cares less about.

Sass, isn't it fair to say that if Go-Lites gear is so high priced then it would make it on REI's clearance rack?

BTW you can get last yr's Go-Lite products at Sierratradingpost.com or killerdeals.com

yeah but it's never what I want(shelters) and REI doesn't sell golite stuff. Or maybe they do but it's special order so it's never on the clearance rack.

I might have to check out their newer packs. My current Golight pack has the usual limit of 25 pounds, and I pull around 22. If the newer packs can handle a higher weight, theoretically they should be more comfortable than the older packs when I'm carrying the same 22 pounds.

Does that sound right?
