Out of the frying pan and into the fire
High-speed chase ends in manure pile

GREENFIELD - A high speed chase through two states and several towns ended suddenly in the early morning hours Tuesday when the suspect fell into a farmer's manure pile.

Christopher Wright, 20, of Springfield has been charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, speeding, marked lanes violations, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, driving a vehicle after suspension of his license, reckless driving of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, using a vehicle without authority and possession of marijuana. He pleaded innocent to all charges.

According to police, the pursuit began about 11 Monday night when trooper Eric Baldwin clocked a white Nissan Ultima traveling north on Interstate 91 at 90 mph.
After a short pursuit through Vermont, the Ultima fled south again, crossed the border into Massachusetts and was again targeted by a local state trooper.
After sighting the Ultima, Eugin pursued it south along the highway until the driver lost control and crashed near Route 5 in Bernardston.

"At that point there was a short foot chase. He didn't go very far. He jumped a fence and landed in a large pile of manure. I think that much of the desire for flight went out of him about then," the police spokesman said, adding that Wright was completely covered in manure when he was arrested.

Following an arraignment in District Court Tuesday, Wright was ordered held on $4,000 bond. He will return to court later this spring for a pretrial hearing.

This is a good article to send in to Jay Leno for his "Headlines" segment on the Tonight Show. He'd love this one.
