Fritz, you read my mind! That's exactly what I was picturing when I saw it pitched that way on Sgt Rock's website. First thought: What if it rained? Second thought....Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

Guess that's why the ends have to be suspended even when it is on the ground...enough to give access to the "port of entry."

Having never used one myself I couldn't say. Is the hole in the center, or toward one of the ends?

That wouldn't be so bad, then. Not so different from crawling into the end of a tent.

I can't say that I have ever tried the hammock as a bivy but the rain fly does extend a fair bit over where one would be crawling so that might help the situation. The only time I would set it up as a bivy would be if I had no other choice or the temp is 10 deg F or lower.

For all you hammock hounds out there it sounds like Hennessy has a new ultra-light model called the A-sym out now. I Read an AT hiker's journal who bought one at trail days. Not sure of the differences but apparently the canopy has more coverage and it is "roomier on a diagonal" but a little heavier than last year's U.L. model.

I've already got one
I got one already.

Just in case ya'll didn't know it, I've been an official Hennessy Gear Tester for a few months now. I've gotten the very first cammoflage Hennessy Ultralight A-Sym Hamock to play with. I also have the new Snakeskin storage system which is super cool and you can get it for any of the hammocks and put it on yourself. I should be getting a sil-nylon rain cape/fly soon to test that Tom has been playing with. You can see the A-Sym on my site at: http://www.hikinghq.net/gear/hennessey_assym_hammock.html

And the Snakeskin at: http://www.hikinghq.net/gear/hennessey_assym_hammock3.html#tip9

I also just finished testing a new "pack" system called the Gearsking by a company called Moonbow. If you like the innovation of the Hennessy Hammock, I think you'll like the Gearskin. It is a framless rucksack under 2 pounds that has carried up to 50 pounds for me so far. And the best part is that it's just as comfortable at any weight as an internal frame backpack.

I think anyone trying to go light ought to chck it out: http://hikinghq.net/gear/moonbow_gearskin.html

My husband and I love out HH. We have camped out in mountains and in flood plains and have slept comfortable every time. I will never go back to a tent. We also made pads that fasten to our sleeping bag so they don't move around at night. They consist of a space blanket stiched in between two pieces of fleece. I then sewed a zig zag pattern from the top to the bottom of the fleece to keep the blanket from bunching up inside. Its a little noisey at first but it kept us warm when the temp dropped to below 30.

My Ultralight A-sym was about $140. Though I bought it from an outfitter in Ely, MN - often overpriced.

HH
I Just bought one New in the box factory fresh for $30.00. Last one that they had though. I forget which one it is, but its camo colored. I guess I can't complain too much at that price. Besides if I get sent get sent to where I think I'm going to get sent it will come in handy.
