Pensacola area here, Blackwater State Forest, Elglin AFB, miles of snow white beaches, many rivers to canoe, clear cold water, come on down.

Florida's got plenty o' natural beauty you just need to 'de-mountainize' your idea of natural beauty. Then you can enjoy grassy plains, swamps, cypress stands, springs, live oak canopies, rivers, lakes, keys and beaches.

If you want to see some of Florida's unnatural beauty you can join Humanpackmule in Daytona, Panama City or Key West for his "Spring Break 2002 Bikini Tour".

Or after dinner at Bern's you can drive up Dale Mabry...

Hey pemsit, I lived in Valparaiso in the early 60's and my parents retired on the Chocktahatchee Bay. I am also a mountain person, but we used to have a blast exploring the swamps, pine woods, creeks and bayous.

Ah well, I should have expected a little grief for that comment.

Coop you are soooooo right with the unnatural comment.

So, you have to de-mountainize yourself? Can I get an AMEN?
Mountains are nice, but they can block your view.

Yeah, man. Can't see no bikinis with all those mountains in your way.

I love the mountains. I would prefer a mountin view to an ocean front view. But the pluses of living in Florida, far outweigh my desire for a mountain view.

Except for the man-eating bugs, hoards of man-eating bugs. The gators are everywhere. Sometimes the police provide escort to and from your house so you don't get eaten. And it's hard to sit out on the lawn when it's a swamp.

Nice place to visit, but unless you've lived here before take my advice, don't move here.

I would have liked to have seen FL a hundred years ago. I loved the imagery of wilderness FL in "The Yearling".

Arclite is right about the gators. In every natural (and many unnatural) body of fresh water, there are gators. They're everywhere, and they love to eat the snowbird's dogs who walk them around lakes. Mosquitos and gnats galore also, and the humidity can be unreal.

It is very beautiful though. But unless you grew up there, you'd probably hate it.

What did you think of the movie version of The Yearling Pathman?

If ya liked the scenery....

That was filmed in the Ocala National forest. We hiked very near the site on the Florida ECT hike this Feb.

I think I have seen a very old movie version of The Yearling, I don't recall seeing a more recent version. Is there one?

I saw pics from one of your trips, that must be the one.

Artex, I will be going to SuwanneeFest the weekend of the 23rd and 24th. It's a great Bluegrass festival at Spirit of the Suwannee Park. If you want to kayak somewhere, give me enough notice and I'll be able to take a day off during the week.

Om, think you'll be up to feeling well one weekday?

ok, I have watched Memphis take it on the chin (or in the shorts) while watching the game here at the Marriott,,,,,then I had dinner at Jacksons (being from Lower Alabama, I am particular as to my seafood, but they had the best grilled swordfish I ever had),,,,,now after a brief rest, I am going out on a recon mission to see the rest of this town,,,,,,,,

I love Florida.

Promise I'll save all my sweet comments for if we see that game, chili. I'll be real sweet, promise.

You're not too far south of Crystal River or the Homassassa River, chili. It may be worth your while to try to see some manatees. I'm guessing that they look a lot like Tennessee's offensive linemen.

good suggestion arc, I hadnt thought of that,,,I will check into that for a possible Sunday activity....

Don't all offensive linemen look alike??

Chili- if possible, I'd also highly recommend checking out the Manatees. In eighth grade I got to go on a field trip and snorkel with them in Crystal River. It was absolutely amazing and something I'll never forget.

I've also seen Manatees about three or four times while surfing off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida. One time was when there were tons of sharks very close to shore. They were everywhere (many people who surf see sharks quite often and are not really afraid), and in swims this lone manatee. I saw it slap it's tail like a beaver on the water a few times, created a loud "thump". My guess was it was to chase the sharks away. Very cool!

I have decided to drive over to Ft Lauderdale tomorrow and see my brother. I have a friend who has invited me to go with her to South Beach Sat night/Sunday......how could I say no?

How the heck did a thread about Florida end to be a converstation about the NHL?

We lost our IHL Orlando Solar Bears last year. I'm Big Coop and I haven't seen a live hockey match in 14 months.

Faster and on Skates
Thank God! Hockey is SOOOO much better(IMO). They do everything foot ball players do but on skates. They 'bat' around a puck that is smaller than a baseball on skates. Everything is faster and they skate backwards. I just got my ticket for the Pens game. 2nd row on the blue line!!! Can't wait!!
