Shawangunks (New York)
On Saturday, March 2nd, I finally got to do some hiking in the 'Gunks. Despite the overcast, hazy weather conditions, I was delighted by the various views from Naponoch Point, and High Point. Was also quite fascinated by the Ice Caves and fissures above Ellenville. On the other hand, I thought the carriage ways (Smiley CW in particular) were unlikeable and difficult to walk because of the intense erosion. All things considered, the hike was certainly worthwhile.

Some questions for any Gunkers out there... Are all the Carriageways eroded as badly as Smiley CW? Can you suggest another hike that I might enjoy in the Gunks? And is it possible to bushwack from Napanoch Point to High Point along the ledge outcroppings?

Thanks in advance.

Gunks
I think the Gunks are more known for the climbing. I have bouldered and done a climb there but thats about it. I do have the map for the area from the NJ/NY trail conference. Do you have it? I have been wanting to go up there to have lunch at the Mohonk with my wife and then do some strolling around. I have heard from someone that hiked there that the trails around Mohonk Lake are pretty exciting but there are packed on the weekend.

Adventurist,

Yes, I have the NY/NJ Trail Conference Map Set.

I met only two small groups along the trails I hiked on Saturday.
Crowds won't prevent me from dayhiking trails that are worthwhile.

Thanks.
