Most of the food threads have to do with cooking supper. What are some good cold ideas for lunch?

Mmmm Mmmm Good
One of my last backpacking trips I made a spinach tortilla sammich with avacado, swiss cheese, tuna and lemon juice squeezed over the gunk. There's an idea for you.

I still stand by my original statement that anyone can prepare anything, anytime on the trail with proper planning.

If not, tell me something that is impossible to enjoy on the trail.

I agree TD, just curious about what others do when they don't have time to stop and cook.

I like using the foil pouches of tuna.. you can do a lot with a half pound of fresh tuna.. sandwiches.. casseroles, salads.. and you don't have to cook it.

Tortillas are a great item for lunch. You can put anything you want in them. I read they're coming out with chunk chicken in the foil pouches, but I haven't found it yet at any stores. The tuna gets a little monotonous after 5 or 6 times.

ya.. I'm with you, treebait.. if they can do the tuna.. when is the chicken and turkey and other meats coming out?

I have no idea. HPM found the info. and told me about it. It's useless to ask anyone at the stores here. You know, the blank stares...

I think they're produced by Hormel, but I'm not certain.

ya.. i have been using the flatbreads.. the soft tortillas work really good.. and also the pita thingies work really good too.. a WHOLE lot easier than bringing in real bread.

Okay, I feel sick now. I went to the Hormel site but had to leave. Go to product search and just scroll down the list...(shiver)
One of their hispanic lines has a 96 oz. can of whole jalapenos. They also have an extensive line of Indian and Greek foods. I'm scared now.

I've thought about that for hummus before. Looks kinda nasty, though. Especially with little flecks in it. You could pull a really good prank on someone with that too.

My favorite bread is like the round flat (2-3" thick) form the local bake house, but most times I buy one of the big Bobali pizza crusts and just feed off that all weekend. It's good for everything.

hey Budder, do you use fresh spinach for that pita thingy?

Thanks for all of the ideas. I have gotten a little tired of what I've taken the last couple of trips. I take a can of pizza dough and spread it out on a baking sheet, add pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, and olives and bake. I freeze it until I head for the trail. By lunch time it's ready to go. The bread will mold before the other stuff goes bad. If it's moldy, don't eat it.

Peanut butter mixed with berries (or jam--whatever) in a squeeze tube with mini-bagels.

Not very creative, but easy.

Chicken in a foil pouch
Chili36 posted a couple of weeks ago that he found it in a SuperWalmart near him. I've looked around and I haven't found it yet. He swears it is out, though.

I keep looking for the chicken, but haven't seen it yet. I did get salmon this weekend though - but it's a 7oz pouch - hope they make the smaller ones too. Got it at the Wal Mart super store.

I bought some more (chicken in foil pouches) this weekend. SweetSue brand at WalMart Super Store. If you can't find it, send me your address and I will send care packages.

Well TD, there are somethings that aren't worth trying to eat on the trail and which are especially hard to have more than a day out.

What I have for lunch changes the further out I am on the trail. The choices are huge for the first day. I don't like to cook lunches, so that also limits me.

I like to take along things like sausage, cheese and some fairly dense bread. I will often spring for really top quality sausage, because it keeps well, is delicious and the calories/ounce ratio is great. Add to that that it is easy to prepare.

I also carry an assortment of trail bars, nuts, dried fruit and the like for lunch. Often, I don't really have lunch, I just stop to eat a few times along the way during the day.

pedxing,
Do you know an on-line supplier of high quality dried sausage?
I have a friend that can get it for me in Orlando, but that's kind of inconvenient.

I just got a superduper deal on hickory farms prepackaged cheeses and summer sausages @ the mall. All those boxes and baskets of goodies were 75% off. None of it expires until August. $3 for four hunks of cheese, a sausage and a jar of spicy honey mustard. $.60 for a prepackaged container of garden herb or cheddar bacon cheese spread. YUM. All in nifty like vacuum packed packages.

Ooh, I totally forgot about the hickory farms store. The sausage at the grocery store is usually too big for lunch. They have a smaller size. I think I'll look into that, as well as some of the other ideas.
