Food/Water combo for Guadalupe Mountain Natl. Park
My gf and I are heading to GNP for a week in late March...I have been told that there is zip zero squat water to be had, except at trailheads. Usually we rely on the dehydrated meals, but looks like we are going to have to switch to some foods that don't need much/any water to prepare. I was wondering if any one could give me some suggestions? Also, the old rule of 1 gal/person/day...is that just drinking water or does that figure take into account water for food prep, dish washing, etc?
Many thanks!

I drink about 3.5 quarts to a gallon of water just on the trail. And that's on easy to moderate trails, partial to full shade.
So i'd say the gallon a day deal if for the trail...in no water conditions i'd try for 1.5-2 gallons a day per person for all needs

One gallon per day is just drinking water and it's a minimum. Last fall I hiked a trail with no water sources and placed a water drop at the halfway point.

Let's get real here. You ain't hikin' in GNMP with 1.5 to 2 gallons of water per day per person considering it's 8.4 lbs per gallon, especially considering elevation gains and the roughness of these trails. How many nights are you planning on hiking there and which campsites are you considering? I take one gallon per 24 hour period fo this park each time I go. I use water for drinking, as well as, oatmeal for breakfast and a freeze-dried meal at dinner and do just fine. Am I as hydrated if I was at home? No, but I'm certainly not suffering. Unavailability of water in the backcountry at this park limits how many nights you can camp without water replishment. I have found that 3 days water(25 lbs) is all I'm willing to carry before I replenish. Thankfully, Dog Canyon TH has water and is at the far north end of the park. Plus, you can hang out at the water spigot and rehydrate for awhile before hitting the trail again. Good luck and say "hi!" to the mountain lions!

Me and a buddy BPed in GNP and there ain't squat for water. We took dry food and left the cooking gear behind. Replaced the weight with water and more water....and more water.....and more water.
We were ther for 3 days and retioned about a gallon each per day. We could have used more. Don't cut yourself short on H20. You may want to hike in with the water you will need for the whole trip and then cache some to save weight and grab it on the way out. BTW, you won't need a filter either.
That is a beautiful place! Be prepared for temp and climate change at any time. Once we were in shorts in the blazing sun; The next we were being blasted by cold wind and parkas & gloves came out Quick!

Also, by leaving the cook stuff behind, you don't have to wash dishes. Out in the desert water is precious! Don't weste it!

What trails will you be doing?
We did Devils Hall, Guadaloupe Peak (MOST IMPRESSIVE), & El Capitan Trail.
If you do the El Capitan Trail, Don't even try to stay at Shumard Canyon Camp. We looked at it and said "F*ck This!" We crashed on the porch at Williams Ranch. The cabin is locked up but it's got a great front porch!
