Marmot rainjackets?
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with marmot's precip or thunderstorm jackets? Reviews I have read have been mixed, mostly due to concerns about how their proprietary breathable membrane material performs in comparison with goretex. I need a jacket soon (must have some kind of breathable material, preferably pit zips too). I am trying to keep the price around $150 U.S., but might spend a little more if warranted. All opinions greatly appreciated!
Much thanks,
Steve

I have a Marmot Precip and it is great for on-trail use. It weighs practically nothing, breaths very well, and keeps the water out.
Although I've never had any rips, I would be hesitant to use this for off trail scrambling; definitely not as tough as a regular nylon/goretex jacket.

i did research on the precips/red ledges/frog toggs last month when i was thinking of buying something.
The precips came out on top after i was done reading/trying them on....i found them for 69 dollars tops..and i forget the pants price. Right before i went to order them i found a red ledge top and bottom set at a local outfitter for 40 dollars. I had to go with this. With my Red Ledges i stayed dry and warm...maybe a little too warm, but i was happy i was dry..it held out 2 inches of rain that day and some serious bushwacking

I've been using the Precip Pants for a year and they've been great! Just got the Precip Jacket. Used only once, but I was happy. The seams on the pants are wearing out only at the ankles (got a lot of days out of it last year). Will use some kind of gore-tex repair tape to patch it.

The Precip is a pretty good shell for the money. I would buy one again.

The lip on the hood is a tad short. Doesn't seem as durable as regular Goretex jackets. Other than that...it's OK.

Rumor is that the precip fails in driving rain (driven by wind). Anybody experience this? Anybody ever inadvertantly done a side-by-side test against gore tex in a wind-driven rain storm? If so, how did it measure up in comparison?

Mine held up in some pretty heavy downpours without leakage that I could detect. I look at things this way. If it rains hard enough and long enough you will get wet no matter what you wear, especially if you're hiking in the rainwear.

I'm not talking about heavy rain, I'm talking about wind-driven rain. I agree about getting damp eventually no matter what you're wearing. I'm just curious to see whether that rumor is true or myth.

I don't know about wind driven rain, but one good way to test it would be to put it on and hop in the shower.

Not my shower, lol (low flow shower head). I have a pressure nozzle attachment for my hose, though. OK, now I need two volunteers to stand in my yard in raingear while I turn a hose on them. Who's in?

I have worn my Precip stuff on the coast in nothing but wind driven rain and it keeps me dry. Gortex on the other hand, wets out quickly.

Thank you. That's exactly the info I was looking for.

One thing about the Precip that might be a concern is that the inner coating isn't protected from abrasion. Gore tex has a liner or 3 layers to protect the laminate. Mine is still too new for me to notice any problem, but based on other jackets I have with unprotected coatings, I would assume that it will not last as long as 3 layer Gore Tex. I have an Activent jacket with an unprotected coating and it's coating is cracking in high stress areas. The Precip cost less though so you can buy 2 Precips for what you pay for 1 Gore Tex jacket.

My SD Peak Bagger jacket wets out, but I didn't know about putting it in the dryer. Before I read about that, I got the Precip jacket.

The pants have been in wet snow and rain and never gets wet inside. Only signs of wear is at the ankles (seams), where the boots rub. The inside is fine and doesn't show any wear.I used the pants at camp every night over long underwear for warmth, and dayhiked in the cold, so its been tested.

Still have to test the precip jacket.

REI will give you 10% off if you type in TAKETEN coupon code when ordering online. That's the only deal I know of right now.

Another nice thing about the Jacket is that if it gets wet it drys very quickly even if it is cold out.

Size and fit
Cheapest I found was 89.00 for the Jacket. Only 10 bucs less than full price. No deal there.
The sizes look to run larger. Sm (36-38) Want to wear it over my Nupste Jacket, so do I go with a Med? I wear a 38.
