“i have a thirty year old Alpinelite frame with a home made pack and straps that weights in 3lbs.2oz.the frame curves forward at the bottom so the frame attaches to the hip belt, at a pivet ,on the hip bones.cliff”

“You might want to look at either VauDe packs (german made) who make several models under 5 lbs. or try and find one the old Peak 1 externals with the Ramflex (composite) frames. If you're more concerned with size than weight, then northern mountain (www.killerdeals.com) has some great deals on Dana Designs externals (shortbeds and longbeds)”

“Take a look at the Kelty Flight. I don't have one (yet), but there are a few peope at TT that do. It's a 4 lb internal frame pack with good capacity (mid-4000's if I recall). Virtually all of the features are removable, which gets the weight way down.”

“I haven't seen the VauDe externals, but I have a VauDe internal and I can vouch for the first rate quality and comfort of their suspension system. Definitely worth checking out at the VauDe website or if you can find one of the dealers. (I could have gotten a dealership once for a $750 wholesale order -- at that rate, friends should get together and pony up for the stuff; VauDe markets BPs, tents, stoves, and bike panniers, so $750 really wasn't a bad limit).”

“dont really know im looking for around 2900 and up. I have the Osprey Crescent 90 5500ci, w/ out a few extras it comes down to about 4 lbs.”

“I think Jansport's external frame packs are supposed to be pretty light. 4 pounds and some change. I don't know how good they work, but externals have a good record of carrying weight pretty well. I think there's instructions on the lightweight backpacker site about making your own lightweight frame pack.”

“How does that Tempest fit you? I thought about getting one so I'd have a small, light pack that would be strong enough to strap my tent to, but the torso length seems a bit short for me. You're about 6', right?”
