Rocking The Exurbs

I live 10 miles
outside a small exurban town about 35 miles South of Atlanta. I was raised in the next county to the south.

I've seen this area grow beyond belief (100% increase in the 90's). Yet there's still a certain smallmess to the town. We don't have much, but we do have the HOTTEST blues club on Earth.

The Blue Sky Tavern.
I was there a couple weeks ago. It was "Open Mic" night. The host band was Fat Bottom Blues Band - they did one set. Then, the girl behind the bar stepped up on stage and grabbed a microphone. The FBBB guitarist picked up a base, and the drummer stayed put. Lastly, a guy got on stage with his guitar. His name is "Lebo" - he's a local fella.

Those four musicians began cranking out sounds reminiscent of Fat Matts Rib Shack or Blind Willies - ATL clubs. Then the bartender... whoa! That chick could SING! They did a flawless, toe-tapping, head bobbin', up-tempo, 10 minute rendition of Mustang Sally with a touch of Southern Boogie Be Bop Rock-a-Billy. They brought the house down.

I turned to the fella sitting on the barstool beside me and shouted:

"God Bless America!"
... especially McDonough, Georgia

I grabbed the sticks... once.
But I'm waaaay outta practice - that high school garage band was a long time ago.

I have been seriously considering buying a used drum kit, tho.

I told a head-banger neighbor about the Blue Sky. He was interested, so I brought him one night several weeks ago. After casing the joint, he finally retrieved his guitar from my truck and jumped on stage. The boy can PLAY SOME ZEPPELIN! Trouble is, that kinda music goes over "like a lead zeppelin" in a blues club...

Steve hiker -
the exurbs are out beyond the suburbs. They're a little bit country, and I'm a little bit rock-n-roll...

Tomorrow night is Open Mic night again - as is every Thurs...
