Bellevue group asks IRS to revoke PETA's tax-exempt status
Tuesday, March 5, 2002

By SONJA BARISIC
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NORFOLK, Va. -- A Bellevue, Wash., group that tracks criminal acts against businesses wants the federal government to revoke the tax-exempt status of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise said in a complaint Monday to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rossotti that "publicly available information strongly suggests that PETA induces or encourages the commission of unlawful acts."

The 12-page complaint said the Norfolk-based animal-rights group or its members have been accused of supporting the Animal Liberation Front, which the FBI has declared a domestic terrorist group, by acting as a media conduit and providing legal defense funds for an ALF member; stealing trade secrets from laboratories; advocating arson; and assaulting business executives.

PETA "encourages the breaking of the law. It's been linked to the breaking of the law. Its own people have extensive arrest records," said Ron Arnold, executive vice president of the center. "Any kind of lawbreaking to us does not deserve tax-exempt status."

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said the center is preying on people's fears of terrorism since the Sept. 11 attacks "and trying to paint with a very broad brush all agitators for social change, no matter how peaceful. It's an opportunity that they're seizing on. It's very false and wrong and McCarthyish."

PETA encourages lawlessness no more than the NRA. Let's ban the NRA. And the GOP who permits corporations to break laws.

I gotta agree with the CDFE, PETA does advocate lawlessness, and as such, are not entitled to tax exempt status. Doesn't really matter if you agree with them or not...

Don't overlook Cockfighting as a fund raising bonanza. They are about to make cockfighting a felony in Oklahoma so the fund raiser may be moved back to Arkansas.

What happens when we do away with the NRA? What will happen when Canada invades? Will PETA be standing there throwing tofu at them? I personally would like to see the meat industry start atacking PETA.

Why should religions be tax-exempt? They encourge the killing of abortion doctors and harrassing of abortion clinics. And what about the Catholics allowing priests to molest again and again and again. Take away their tax status too.

BR: The NRA encourages lawlessness by their refusal to close the gunshow loophole which allows criminals easy access to guns. In fact, they encourage ease of access for guns for everyone, including the lawless.

Brilliant, bacpac. EVERY gun law in this country is written with the NRA's hand in it. No gun law at any level is written without the NRA giving its input and meddling.

Uhh yeah, why don't you guys see it? Guns are the evil spawn of Satan I tell ya. They do nothing but kill kill kill.

Since when has the NRA pushed for a gun law to be written? Their platform has always been that hundreds of thousands of unenforced gun laws are already in the books why pass any more. This was their greatest beef with Clinton. Many of the so-called new gun control laws he proposed were already written but not being enforced. A better way to say it "I'm doing it for the sake or our children".

excellent question that wasn't answered. There is no "gunshow loophole" its a made up term that basically means that if I, as a private individual, want to sell a gun to my pal or leave it to my son, wife, etc. I have to go through the system, pay fees, etc. That isn't legal/constitutional. Its not a loophole. GWED is listening to too much prime time media and does not know the subject he trolling. The NRA (I'm a life mbr) is for locking up law breakers, period. Enforcement of laws, how is that encouraging breaking laws. Who is the biggest Gun safety instructional group in the country, why its the NRA.

Jesse Jackson's and his Rainbow thugs arrainged a bus trip for Enron employees (one or two) from Houston to Washington to plead that all PAC money from Enron be returned. When asked if Rainbow was going to return the money Enron gave to the Rainbow Push organization, Jackson replied, "No, we are not using the money for evil purposes."

News Flash
I'm pretty sure no one on this side of the pond has seen this yet.

In Europe, PETA has an ad in cinemas/T.Vs....it shows this woman wearing a mink coat walking down a street. A thug jumps out from an alley and beats her on her head with a baseball bat(repeatedly I think)....blood is splattered everywhere. She is lying on the street unconscious (maybe dead) and bleeding...he takes her mink coat and walks away.

PETA says this ad is just depicting what happens to a fur bearing animal in the woods. Lots of other people are saying PETA wants people to kill fur wearing people.

PETA is now in the process of getting North America to allow them to run this ad here.

What do you all think about this?

Why the NRA?
Why is the NRA always somehow negatively involved in discussions ranging from animal rights, environmentalism, to other social(ist?) movements? Is it possible to be both an environmentalist and a gun owner. Does owning a gun mean that I'm a racist, sexist, homophoebe, or any other "ist" or "ism" that's likely to spur a full-blown cultural diversity frenzy. Is there an agenda at work here? I really dont care. I own a gun, and I'm o.k with that; I could really care less what anybody else thinks about it because I have law, precendent, and 60 million other americans who feel the way I do...

I feel sorry for people who would rather be alive than free.

WhiskeyLake, I know some friends and families (plus TT'ers), that would rather die or suffer mega pain, than to protect themselves or family with a gun or any weapon. They expect the "authorities" to be there for them at the moment of crisis. So sad and stupid.
