Holy crap! Can there even BE any comparison? Led Zepplin is head and shoulders above the Who. Jimmy Page is the best. The Who even at there peak was no match for the musicianship and writting abilities of Zepplin.

Arclite - The question is which band is better? Personal preference is all I'm looking for.

I'm a big Zep fan also, but the Who had much better stuff. Zep wrote plenty of good stuff but it was much lighter and shallower (IMO). Quadrophenia is awesome. Who's Next is my #1 favorite album ever.

Zeppelin
although the Who was a great band. I saw them last summer. Great show. Pete Townsend is amazing. Quadrophenia makes it a difficult choice, but I favor Led Zeppelin. More better blues, and I hate "Tommy". I can only stand Rock Opera/Concept stuff for a little while.

I used to get charged for High School football games with When the Levee Breaks, speaker on each side of my head.

Zepplin
This is a clear case of comparing apples to oranges, and is only a measure of personal preference.

They are both great so it's a 50-50 deal there.

Becuase I am a drummer I can't favor one or the other.

I was struggling with that myself, Buddur. The sound of The Who is so much more refined than Zep, I'm not sure they really belong in the same category.

That said, I prefer Led Zeppelin. I mean come on, does The Who have even one song that kicks ass like "When The Levee Breaks"? The only one I can think of that even comes close is "Who Are You?"

i think Led's stuff is pretty deep m'self! i like them much better. although, one of my friends just saw Tommy, and i'm jealous!

my dad'd favorite joke when i was little was to say "Who" when i asked who sang "that song." i'd say, "no, WHO??" and so on... :-)

My Mom took my younger brothers to see "Tommy" when it originall came out in the theater. I think they were like 8 and 10, at the oldest. I think it freaked them out a little, lol....

I later told her that any movie with character called "The Acid Queen" might not be suitable for young children...

C'mon now people...
Led Zepplin was far better than the Who....back in the day...the demand for Zep tickets outweighed Who tickets by at least 2-1. Plus Zepplin never wrote any silly goofy songs about teenage waste land. Stairway to Heaven is on about every poll list you could find and is listed as number one of all time. Compare them album by album and it's no contest....

Hmmm... can we say Led Zeppelin, I don't see how the who come close, sure they have great music, I'm not gonna say the who is a bad band, not by a long shot, but Zeppelin is ahead of the race this time, turn on a rock station, who would u most likely hear first? i'm puttin a bet on Zep

le Subtil-

Gonna buy a fast car
Put on my lead boots
And take a long, long drive
I may end up spendin' all my money
But I'll still be alive

Led Zepplin's first alblum was their best.
It was raw and and not over-mixed.
Page did the whole first alblum with a Fender Telecaster and a small Supro tube amp and little in the way of effects.

Theirs music became the insipid pop crap that Robert Plant warned us about.

In April of '69 I saw Led Zepplin OPEN THE SHOW for THE WHO!!!
This was at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.....4 months before the Woodstock Festival.

The Who and Zep are good bands for this discussion
because they both are good bands... and as a rock fan you will be drawn to one or the other

you hold the gun, and I hold the wound. We stand staring in each others eyes. We both think we know what's right, though we know we know what's wrong, we tell ourselves so many many lies. It all looks fine through the naked eye, but it don't happen that way at all no no no, it don't happen that way at all

I prefer Zeppelin, musically and lyrically. I am absolutely crazy about Robert Plant!

To me, The Who's music all sounds the same.

Tom Terrific: Every year or two, I "pick up my guitar and play, just like yesterday," knowing that I "play for free, I play for me."

For a few minutes, until my fingertips start burning, I can imagine what it must be like to strike those chords through a wall of Marshalls, Fenders or Voxes, and then I put down the guitar and slip a disc into the changer and turn it up really loud. Both bands have their well-earned place in the rock god pantheon.

Then again, I still remember the ludicrous rant a guy was making one night at a Florida Keys campground during Spring Break '73 -- that Richie Blackmore of Deep Purple was better than Clapton, Page or Townshend. Now that was a non-starter for a debate.

I wouldn't make the choice unless there was a gun pointed at my head.
Led Zeppelin were the first and best "heavy metal" band.
The Who were the first and best "punk" band.
I love to listen to Keith Moon on the drums. He is like a barely tamed tornado.
I love to listen to Jimmy Page.
Sorry, I refuse to choose.

I said a young man, ain't got nothin' in the world these days.
You know, in the old days, when a young man was a strong man,
all the people, they'd jump back when a young man walked by.

Remember all the albums stated "best played at maximum volumn"

Perhaps the best thing about both bands is that they changed the way folks thought about rock music.

Another story from our China tour: For the first semester, there was a contingent of students from a U.S. Mennonite college doing their study-abroad term. It was quite a fun-loving group, as the college was on the moderate side of Mennonites, though some of the students had come from the very strict branch. One of the young women told us of her "conversion." She said she was the youngest in a big family, raised extremely conservatively -- had never NEVER heard anything but hymns, no TV, etc., until getting to this presumably safe religious college. Then one of her roommates played her a Zeppelin album and she was another soul lost to rock 'n' roll. She was absolutely mad for them.
