What's next?
The Wisconsin Northwoods and the UP had a winter storm warning for last night, predicting snow and freezing rain. I was awakened about 3 a.m. by thunder and lightning -- turns out we had a thunder snow storm. I think that was my first experience of that mix. Got about 5" of heavy powder (is that an oxymoron?) over a slight glaze. Another storm of similar nature is predicted for tonight and Saturday.

First we have no winter, then it shows up in March with the thunder and lightning of April or May.

Here in Chicago we had thunder snow earlier in the winter. Rare event the weather guessers say.

Last weekend we got 10 inches of snow, today it's 60 degrees!

Cant wait to see what April brings!

Except that the winter has been dry,
pretty normal here for March. Cold one day, warm the next, windy with the next front, cold again and windy most afternoons. My least favorite time of year here.

just goes to show ya that nothing is predictable in this world, i guess i've gotta learn to accept that, i always look forward to snowmobiling, skiing and all, this winter was the worst for anything, a little winter camping/hiking then the snow comes in march? but we always get screwed out of that around here, yesterday we were supposed to get 6-12 inches, we got a glaze of ice with some snow pellets, hard on the windshields and roads, what a world.

It's about 67 degrees here in lovely Ohio. I went and picked up my Honda scooter today so I'm out running around trying not to get killed. Even if I do, what a great day to die!

Pekka -

I got layed off for awhile and I was too busy outside to log on to the net.
But I have a new job now - so I'll have plenty of idle time at work to surf

Today in beautiful Eastern Kentucky it was sunny, breezy and warm with a high of 69 degrees. It's 67 right now. I love wearing shorts and a tshirt in March!

We just got the forecast on TV: We're under another winter storm warning through tonight into Saturday, thunder and lightning likely again, but this time freezing rain is expected instead of heavy snow. Marquette in the U.P. is under an ice storm warning. Can you say, "Where were you when the lights went out?"

But of course, since I just reorganized my gear, I know where the flashlights, headlamps, candle lanterns, etc. are.

nigal - Sounds like you're enjoying your new Honda Scooter. Which model is it and how did you arrive at your selection?

More thunder overnight, but rain instead of snow. A thick glaze on the cars and the snow on the ground is now turning to thick crusty slush. Temp is 33, so if it drops this will be a real mess.

Ugh, Storm after storm rolled through last night. The wind and thunder rattling the rafters. I didn't sleep good and woke up exhausted. I might take a nap instead of going backpacking.

I bailed out on this weekend's trip. So many different kinds of weather were expected that I was stressing over which clothes/outerwear to bring. Gusts of wind up to 50 mph and thunderstorms were possible, changing to snow with no accumulation expected. I had visions of trees crashing onto my tent or my parked car. If I had left on Friday, I would have been blissfully ignorant of such forecasts. I should do that from now on.

Here we go...
Temp has started dropping, now below freezing, and the rain has turned to snow. A wind advisory is posted, so the snow will be blowing as the slush is freezing. We're headed to a low of around zero overnight. Yummy.

"nigal - Sounds like you're enjoying your new Honda Scooter. Which model is it and how did you arrive at your selection?"

It's a '87 250 Elite. The thing will get up and scoot for a 250. I picked it up off a guy from my wife's church for a grand. It only has 17,000 miles and is in new shape. He sold it because he got teased too much by the guys at work. Hell, I've embraced the inner geek and don't care what anyone thinks! LOL! I'll be able to go back and forth to work (150 miles a week) for $3 a week.

My new bumper sticker will read:

"Go ahead and laugh! I'm gettin' 65 MPG!"

Thanks for the information, nigal. I've been admiring a 150 model parked near work. The new ones on the Honda Site do not include a 150. For the economy it is a real consideration, and it is more versatile than a bicycle. Hope you have lots of luck with yours.

Hot and Freezing...
Weird winter alright...check out the "Who believes in Global Warming" thread.

In Montreal we had 60F Sat., I went inline skating in a T-shirt....come Sun we had 20F with winds gusting from 40mph to 83mph which brought the temp. down to -13F. Crazy. BTW, I went biking for 1hr in that crazy wind...at some point I was practically standing still.

Yes, wierd weather
Mammoth Mtn, CA: Saturday was was clear skies and beautiful weather and perfect conditions. The runs at the top were awesome! Then Sunday it was storming on the mountain, high winds and snow, and the top was closed. A lot of vehicles were heading out. In the afternoon we managed to do some traversing to the south side of the mountain and got some great untouched powder runs! By the time we got back each time the wind covered our tracks. Around 3pm the sun came out. The lifts close at 4pm, we finished by 4:20pm.

Okay, it was upper 40s Tuesday, sunny and upper 30s at least today, melting, melting ... and now we have a winter storm watch for Thursday night into Friday morning for as much as 6-10" of new snow. This does not look like a gentle arrival of spring in the northwoods. The maples are going to go nuts trying to know whether to let the sap start running.
