“Ah, our town was spared (but for how long, since the Wal-Mart is being supersized). However, the U.P. was hit hard, losing the stores in Houghton and Marquette. The latter is an anchor store for the local mall, but OTOH Marquette just got a Target about a quarter mile up the highway (across from Wal-Mart of course).”

“Houghton, MI, now that brings back memories of linencugles (sp?) and pickled eggs. I loved the stores on the main street that open into eachother on the sides because the snow gets too deep in front and a little hotel near the bridge with the deck outback where you can see the northern lights. Cool town.”

Yeah, we all figured the K-Mart in Houghton would be closed. They can't compete with WalMart and that other store up the hill, I can't remember the name of it.”

“Our K-Mart in Flagstaff is closing. It actually made money but it has something to do with getting out of an expensive lease. My baby sister's husband is the pharmacist there. This means a big upheaval in their lives. He had 4 job offers yesterday but he has been with K-Mart so long he is unsure what will happen to his retirement fund. They might have to move to Phoenix to stay with K-mart -- that really sucks because they just bought a new house last year and because I will miss them really bad if they go.”
