hot & wet
Need to get hubby a present. I want to get him a hat to cover his above the tree line head (bald). A hat is important when you are outdoors at high altitude and have no natural shade. When we get to a hot spring or lake for a dip or maybe just hanging around the campsite, it is often the only thing he will be wearing. But that isn’t the point. What I need is a hat that will both work as a rain hat and have enough ventilation for warm weather and direct sun. Anybody have a suggestion?

I have an Outdoor design boonie hat made by Dorfman Pacific that I really like (waterproof breathable nylon)

L.L. Bean Gore-Tex Ultimate® Hat

I don't have one, so I can't tell you how well it works. I want one, though.

The difficulty with Gore-Tex will be if it breathes enough to be wearable during hot, sunny weather. Look for a hat that has sufficient venting around the crown, but not so big as to allow lots of rain (and they should be screened to keep bugs out).

I have a Tilley hat that is good all weather, but a bit too heavy duty for the backcountry (pretty thick, durable canvas), but my cotton ripstop boonie hat is pretty ideal except in a downpour.

Go tex is not the answer. He has a goretex boone type already. Gore tex is a fraud. The amount of moisture vapor that will pass through it is so small that it don’t matter. You guys are no help, except for that last one violin posted. Could I get him boots to match that hat?

I usually carry/wear a wide-brimmed polyester hat to ward off the sun and put on a rain shell with a hood when it rains. I know that's not what you're looking for but I do this because I couldn't find what you're looking for. The really rain-proof hats aren't breathable enough to wear in the sun and heat. Do let me know if you find one though, I want one too!

What I use is a Resistol white (straw) wide brimmed hat - that plus a bandana rolled for a sweat band tied under the hat. - works very well but not everyone likes the style (grin) - see my picture on Phils page for how it looks ( it looked better about 3 years ago)
