"Save the liver- it makes a wonderful pate!"
This could probably carry over into the "Useful Trail Dog" thread. What's interesting about eating the dogs is that the explorers ate everything; including the liver. On Mawson's trek (1909), he and the remaining survivor of his party got very ill, which they attributed to lack of food and vitamin deficiencies. Decades later they discovered that the dog's liver contained high amounts of vitamin E. The explorers eating the dog livers actually were suffering from vitamin E poisoning.

The lesson? Don't listen to Julia Child!

How can you say “Shoot to Kill” was a bad movie?! It was pure grade B camp in the tradition of Billy Jack or Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I guess you forgot the classic scene where the experienced backcountry guide decided the best thing to do when charged by a grizzly from 30 feet was to run? Remember? They would have outrun it but he fell and hit his head on a rock and Sidney Poitier was able to scare the bear away because, like most of the people around there, he’d never scene a black man either. Great stuff!

I guess by the inclusion of Sidney Poitier I assumed it was a serious film. But since Kirstie Allie was in it, it should automatically be included in the camp/schlock genre.

I thought the "Blair Witch Project" was a comedy.
The "Bare Winch Project" was much better! Nikki Fritz Rules!!

not really a movie but...
I have a trailside video of a family who backpacked 117 miles together. They kept a video journal of their trip - it was pretty good, but only an hour long.

The movie Into Thin Air documents a tragic Everest expedition. It was the one when John Hall died at the foot of the Hillary Step. The dialog and action was great. I watch that movie a couple of times a year. It seems very realistic to me. The gear and the situations look very true to life.

For comic relief, I like Stallone's Cliffhanger.

Really...I'm addicted to the first 5 or 10 minutes of that movie...I just have to watch the teddy bear fall.

Heros of Telemark
I just saw this one recently.

Made in 1963?
Filmed in Norway!

Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris are Norksi's who go after the Nazi's heavy water business in Norway.

I love the skiing scenes.
Those two parachute in at night and ski all over hell with good-looking rucksacks.
They have rather bulky sleeping bags strapped across the top and appear to be adequately equipped for their environment.

They are traveling in truely cold weather dressed in sweaters and anoraks with hats and gloves and lovely wooden skis.

The German Alpine Infantry look great in their sharp but functional wool caps and coats.

The Real Deal no sissy synthetics!

Twigeater, that scene was great...the first time I watched it, my whole body tensed up and I was gripping the arm rest with all my might, and my back was pressed solidly into the backrest. I realized my whole body sweated, and my heart was pounding after that scene was over. It sure looked real.

My wife's aunt lent us Vertical Limit. She thought I'd like it because I'm into that backpacking stuff. What a hoot! A true idiot against nature story.

Pekka,,,,,I think the movie you are referring to was called 'Continental Divide' or someting along those lines.

No one mentioned 'Never Cry Wolf'. Although it is not a 'backpacking' movie its pack full of great footage of AK even if it was just filmed over the hill from a highway.

Never Cry Wolf was a great flick. I didn't realize Into Thin Air had been made into a movie - I'll have to look for it.

tahoe- That would be Rob Hall? Scott Fischer too. Remember Alex Lowe? And Anatoli? Among others, all these guys are now dead.

They say it's not any one mountain that will kill you. It's doing them over and over again that will.

"Where Eagles Dare" was one of my inspirations for winter backpacking.
Never mind all the murder.
They had cool rucksacks and over-white parkas, etc

"Cold Mountain" is being made into a movie. For those of you who haven't read the book, it's about a Confederate who's been wounded twice and goes AWOL from the military hospital in Raleigh, NC. He is trying to hike to his beloved, in Cold Mountain, NC. BTW, Cold Mountain is an actual place. It's about 6030'. I finished the book Tuesday night. Now I want to go and hike it.

The big downside of the movie is that pretty boy Tom Cruise is playing Inman. I think the chick from Jerry McGuire is playing Ada.

I never pictured Cruise as the vampire Lestat, either. He should stick with Historical Romances, LOL

I've heard that that's the same Cold Mountain at the northern end of Shining Rock Wilderness.

That's the one. Shining Rock is mentioned prominately as a type of "Promised Land" to the local Cherokees.

K2 is great.

Cliffhanger is exciting.

Vertical Limits is fun...at least they had 2 cute gals (an American and a Russian, I think)in this film.

Anybody remember the mountaineering film with Clint Eastwood and George Kennedy? The one where they have to find the Russian (?) mole in their group. Turns out to be George at the end of the movie.

2 Backpacking movies
Alaska-It's on the Hbo-Cine-Showtime group of channels now. Two kids hike to find their Dad who crashed in a plane. They run into poachers and other stuff. But for the scenery alone the movie (IMO) is worth watching.

Whitewater Summer- Kevin Bacon stars. He takes 4 teens out on a hike, some climbing, some whitewater. Great scenery!

Can someone try it?
Is there a way to put a video cam on your pack?

I think it would be very cool to tape a whole trip.

So would anyone else think that this would be a good idea?

The only problem would be is that we would need a lot of batteries for the camera and batteries weigh a lot. Wait a minute, is Allen going on the trip? We can give them to him and make him carry them. He never says no.

Alright, I'll give you the solution, as I have been working on something like this......rechargeable batteries. You get yourself a solar powered charger and have at it. I want 1/3 of the profits......

Sounds cool to me.I am so wanting to do this.I have read that they make a tripod for the backpack and a recharger.

1/3 I have no problem with that although I think I am going to do it for fun not to make money.

Also--- you could use the new technology of those cell phones that transmit video from the field. They're a little pricy, but whatnever...

Editing...You could do it on Adobe Premire for under 500.00 I believe. Or an iMac (yuck!) I bet you could use a laptop, small digital camera and a satellite phone and upload the images as you are done. noe THAT'S pricey. Not like I've thought about this or anything.....:)

Now you guys are up to 38%....;)

It reminds me of a multi-part episode of "Trailside" where a family of four were thru-hiking the AT (husband, wife, girl, boy). Each family member would take the camera and do a like a diary entry every few days.

I'll never forget this one scene. They had been on the trail about a month and a half (and looked it, <G>), and the 10-year-old girl was just dog tired and wishing there was more COUNTER SPACE.

It looked like she had aged 20 years.

Don't anyone steal my ideas! I'm planning on buying some equipment and trying my hand at making outdoor videos in the next couple months. I have Final Cut Pro 3 and am waiting for the delivery of a couple Canon XL1s.

My next step is to find a viable and light solar powered battery charger. I know they exist because those two women who skiied across Antartica shot video of their trip. Also, Jon Krakauer was climbing down there and had a video crew with him so someone has developed a system.

Wounded Knee, what kind of producing did you do and where?

Rosey, can't wait to see how your videos turn out.
