That's pretty much the definition of being a dick. Of course, you'll claim I was a dick ... but the difference is I was provoked. For a period in time my work was to do enviornmental remediation for a contractor. I have studied enviornmental sustainability. I am no expert but I know a little. We sit in our warm homes heated by natural gas or coal electric and complain about the level of protection we have for the enviornment. Why is our government this or why the EPA that? Our regulations on the enviornment are far more stringent than those of our neighbors. Great but not enough. When we chose to purchase packs made in Vietnam, shoes in Thailand, and whatever it is that we buy from foreign sources we cast a true vote. That vote is that it is so important that we regulate the heck out of ourselves while forcing companies out of America to set up shop elsewhere. Elsewhere where labor is cheap and enviornmental regulations dont exist. This is fine if those companies dont want to fix it up dont stay here and pollute. But then we slap ourselves in the face when we purchase from these same companies. Hey, we saved a buck right? But at what cost to the American society as a whole? What cost to the global enviornment?” 5:29:31 PM 11/29/05 “Big Gun has a point. Temperatures around the North Pole are rising twice as fast as in the rest of the planet, according to UN and Canadian government experts. By 2050, they warn, ships will be able to sail around northern Canada for most of the summer. This could reduce the sea trip from London to Tokyo to 16,000 kilometers (9,950 miles), against 21,000 kilometers (13,000 miles) via the Suez Canal or 23,000 kilometers (14,300 miles) going through the Panama Canal. The search for a Northwest Passage to Asia inspired explorers from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Many died. But now greenhouse gases are opening up the passage for them. “There are now more and more ice-free portions of Arctic maritime territory,” said Frederic Lasserre, a geographer and specialist on the Arctic, at Laval University in Quebec. If a ship has a reinforced hull, and the winds and currents are in the right direction, it is already “relatively easy” to take the route around the small islands and straights around Canada’s Arctic territory, Lasserre added. Arctic temperatures are expected to rise significantly by the end of the century, according to experts, which will melt even more glaciers. “What we are seeing in the Arctic, and what we are seeing further south with the hurricanes, are the most pessimistic models of global warming,” said Louis Fortier, an oceanographer who has just returned from an expedition to the region on the Canadian research vessel Amundsen. Lasserre predicted that within 30 years it would probably be possible for ships not normally equipped for the Arctic to tackle the Northwest passage. About 20-30 ships currently take it each summer now. In a territorial dispute now linked to the global warming problem, Canada criticizes the United States, European Union and even Japan for not recognising its 1986 claim of sovereignty to waters around the Arctic archipelago. The United States insists that these are international waters. An American ice-breaker went through the archipelago in 1985 causing a diplomatic dispute with Canada, which reaffirmed its claim to the territorial waters. Canada , which is also arguing with Denmark over a small island off Greenland, based its territorial sovereignty on the ice that then linked all of the Arctic islands. But cracks are quickly forming in the claim. If sovereignty of the Northwest passage ever came before a court, Canada could lose its ability to impose navigational rules in the region. There are huge environmental issues at stake. Canada would be unable to deny passage to any vessel that meets international standards for environmental protection, crew training and safety procedures. The United States argues that all waters between two open seas should be open to all shipping. Lasserre emphasized how the maritime and continental plateau frontier between the United States and Canada has never been formally agreed -- and this will become another looming dispute. The commercial stakes are also high as the Beaufort Sea, which touches the Yukon in Canada and the US state of Alaska, has huge reserves of oil and natural gas. Experts have highlighted how access to these reserves will become a lot easier as global warming increases. Lasserre said that there is more than oil to be found in the Arctic. “There is also gold, diamonds, copper and zinc. There is going to be a lot of traffic caused by the mining exploration,” he said. The gulf stream stops and the big chill hits overnight. Closer to reality might be that the gulf stream slows and Europe slowly cools. The other effect is that tropical heated waters normally transported to the cooler areas to the north by the gulf stream stagnate. The Sea Surface Temperatures (SST's) go up and hurricanes increase to disapate the heat. SST's in the Gulf of Mexico are warmer now than December and even November of last year. We need a big deep cold front to chill those waters or look out next hurricane season. Bateaux Fears of Big Freeze as Scientists Detect Slower Gulf Stream By Steve Connor, Science Editor The Independent UK 01 December 2005 http://news.independent.co.uk/world/science_technology/article330454.ece In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, this material is distributed without profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving the included information for research and educational purposes. The ocean “engine” that helps to drive the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and keeps Britain relatively mild in winter has begun to slow down, say scientists. Measurements of ocean currents in the North Atlantic reveal that they have weakened by about 30 per cent since 1992. The findings, published in the journal Nature, fit computer predictions of what would happen when Greenland glaciers begin to melt because of global warming. The models suggest that extra freshwater released into the North Atlantic could weaken ocean currents and even shut down the Gulf Stream. Britain benefits from the enormous amounts of heat - equivalent to the output of a million power stations - carried from the Caribbean by the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Drift, and a tailing off in these currents could have a major impact on the country’s climate. Scientists estimate that the detected 30 per cent weakening of the Atlantic currents could lead to a fall of about 1C in Britain’s average temperatures over the next 20 years. They also warn that the weakening could be the first signs of an accelerating trend that could eventually lead to a more drastic change, including a complete shutdown of the currents. If this were to happen, average temperatures in Britain could fall by between 4C and 6C, leading to winter temperatures similar to Newfoundland in Canada, which is on the same latitude as the UK but does not benefit from the Gulf Stream. Professor Harry Bryden, of the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton, said the ocean currents of the North Atlantic acted as a conveyor belt that carried warm water at the surface in one direction and transported cold, deep-water currents in the other. “It is a massive system that includes the Gulf Stream and it carries heat northward out of the tropics into the northern Atlantic, warming the atmosphere and helping to provide northern Europe with a moderate climate,” Professor Bryden said. For the past 50 years, oceanographers have measured the strength of these currents along a stretch of the North Atlantic situated at a latitude of 25 degrees north of the equator, from Florida in the west to the African coast in the east. When they analysed that rate of ocean flow - measured in Sverdrups (Sv), or a million tons of water flowing per second - they found that in 1992 it was about 20Sv, but in 2004 it had fallen to 14Sv. “In previous studies over the past 50 years, the overturning circulation and heat transport across 25 degrees north were reasonably constant. We were surprised that the circulation in 2004 was so different from previous estimates,” Professor Bryden said. The study used data from an array of instruments anchored at 22 moorings, nine of which are positioned east of the Bahamas, four in the mid-Atlantic and nine across the continental slope of east Africa. Each mooring is anchored to the seabed on wires 5,000 metres (16,400ft) long, and holds instruments that continuously record salinity, temperature, pressure and current flow. Stuart Cunningham of the National Oceanography Centre said: “Continuous monitoring could alert us to potential rapid climate change.”” 4:09:13 PM 12/07/05 “...and with it the risk of a territorial dispute between Canada and the United States. I believe that the earth is warming. Don’t know how much of it we humans are causing. We don’t seam to be able to control much in nature. I do know that scientists are not infallible prophets being the truth down from the mountain. I do know that you are more likely to get big money funding for your scientific research project if you make the subject look like the future of all mankind depends on it. Scientists, like everybody else, do have preconceived notions and political positions they wish to advance. Some research results in facts as hard as diamonds and some require some much interpretation that it is as hard as warm maple syrup. Acceptance of the later is an act of faith. Acceptance of global warming is an act of faith. That is why it is controversial.” 4:44:44 PM 12/07/05 “Y2 - Apparently you are smart enough to argue with personal insults. Congratulations! JJA SON Year” 6:25:15 PM 12/07/05 “The weather will soon be odd, haywire, bizarre, completely offtrack not necassarily apocalyptic or civilization ending, just probably so!” 6:42:16 PM 12/07/05 “Hey Sarge, where'd ya get that map with the temps on it???? post the website please.” 6:49:25 PM 12/07/05 “catskhiker - Would you run that past me again, please?” 6:50:00 PM 12/07/05 “nevermind, found it” 6:52:59 PM 12/07/05 “Sarge - again you demonstrate those wild debating skills of yours. No one said - 'it's hot today, therefore there's global morning'. Only a person of limited capacity, or a naive rightie would take that interpret people talking about temperature trends over time. Also maybe you need to take your own advice and read the thread. Or maybe you don't want to answer the question as to why posting the fact that it's cold today has no relevance to the dabate?” 7:07:27 PM 12/07/05 “There is no mention of Global warming in the Bible. Is there?” 7:11:26 PM 12/07/05 “Sarge - again you demonstrate those wild debating skills of yours. No one said - 'it's hot today, therefore there's global morning'. - Y2 8:07:27 PM 12/07/05 ---- NASA says Last year was the fourth warmest since systematic temperature measurements began around the world in the 19th century, NASA scientists said yesterday. Particularly high temperatures were measured over Alaska, the Caspian Sea region of Europe and the Antarctic Peninsula, while the United States was unusually cool. But the global average continued a 30-year rise that is "due primarily to increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," said Dr. James E. Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in Manhattan.” - y2 12:34:24 PM 2/16/05 ===== Y2, if you are "nobody", then I agree with your statement. LMAO @ y2!” 8:17:34 PM 12/07/05 “Sudden global warming at some point is in fact predicted in the Bible.” 8:29:08 PM 12/07/05 “You're struggling with the concept of 30-years and "today" as in Wednesday?” 8:39:09 PM 12/07/05 Jump to Page << prev
