The season of frozen surfaces (when machinery can more easily get around) there is apparently getting shorter. Any all-weather roads to be constructed will now require even more gravel to be quarried for the roadbeds. These and other factors mean much and increasingly much oil will be necassary to burn in order to get the oil in ANWR. last edited: 1/18/06 9:27:17 PM” 9:21:28 PM 1/18/06 “They mentioned the effects to roads and railroad tracks. You could see the tracks buckling and twisting and even buildings sinking into the soil. They did talk about the pipeline sinking too.” 9:26:07 PM 1/18/06 “Mtnstve, That is okay about the leak in your boat as long as it is on YOUR side of the boat ....not mine. Whose boat is leaking? Echos of the tragedy of the commons here.” 9:51:12 PM 1/18/06 “Time to change boats :-) last edited: 1/18/06 10:02:31 PM” 10:00:19 PM 1/18/06 “Lot's of sloganeering here... No facts, just "read somewhere", "heard some place", "was on the news", opinion... My argument was theoretical, and mixed with a little political disappointment. jeez...I'm done with this topic. I knew better...something made me contribute...argh! mayhaps this topic was more appropriate for the "fuego" category... I'm gonna go back and talk about backpacking :-)” 10:44:21 PM 1/18/06 “I still say all we need is a good Krakatoa.” 10:45:18 PM 1/18/06 8:43:18 AM 1/20/06 “further proof that global warming will actually bring about a major ice age.” 8:50:14 AM 1/20/06 “I wish it would hurry up and get here.......I tired of hundred plus summers.........and air conditioning bills............and igloos are cheaper to build..............” 8:52:52 AM 1/20/06 “Skiing will be sweet!” 8:56:47 AM 1/20/06 “It has been very mild here in the Southeast so far in January. By this time most years locally here in the NC foothills, a few mornings would have had a low temperature in the single digits. This season so far a morning low below 20 degrees has not occurred. Mild winters allow many pests to survive and so flourish the following summer, like native pine bark beetles. As well, mild winters allow many noxious invasive plants and animals to expand their range. last edited: 1/20/06 9:09:26 AM” 9:07:00 AM 1/20/06 “You should move to Moscow.” 9:09:14 AM 1/20/06 “it's been mild here in PA this January. We have had only one snow so far this season and that was back in the middle of December. So far this January, I think the avg temp has been 43*. Something is seriously wrong.” 9:23:02 AM 1/20/06 “Average PA with Moscow and everything is alright.” 9:26:38 AM 1/20/06 9:32:19 AM 1/20/06 9:40:38 AM 1/20/06 “Do you guys know how many people depend on the global warming theory for their jobs? These people depend on global warming alarm to feed their families! their kids will go without if the global warming theory is debunked! Why do you guys hate children?” 9:44:35 AM 1/20/06 “The record high for York, PA on this day is 71 F from 1951. 15 degrees higher than today. If anything, we should be afraid of global cooling. For the sake of the children, I'll stop.” 9:47:29 AM 1/20/06 “I thought the Bush Administration changed the name from Global Warming to Global Climate Change. It encompasses the imbalance of the ice cap melt/shrink/breakup and cold Japanese.” 10:24:19 AM 1/20/06 “Who believes in Global Warming? Not me. Gotta prove it first.” 10:27:50 AM 1/20/06 “Prove it? Isn't faith enough? *ducks*” 10:30:22 AM 1/20/06 “Hey, someone post that picture of the guy with his head up his backside. ;o)” 10:30:59 AM 1/20/06 “While you're posting that picture, make sure you post some solid evidence.” 10:40:42 AM 1/20/06 “TrailKicker - There will never be enough evidence for some people. They'll always be excuses because the accumulating evidence doesn't suit your view of the world.” 10:58:12 AM 1/20/06 “y2 - Serious question: What view of the world? One where it's not hot? What motivation do non-industry titans have to not believe in man-made global warming?” 11:00:25 AM 1/20/06 “What motivation - the motivation is that in the short-term it might cost them something to resolve the problem. Two examples: Power stations - it costs cash to cut their emissions. Car makers, developing more efficient big engines that Americans want will cost them money to develop, potentially making their cars more expensive and costing them sales. In the meantime there's no need to push more efficient engines into production as people will just buy what is on the market. Also, cutting emissions typically requires some action at government level to work, perhaps new legistlation or improved tax breaks. Calls for voluntary clean-ups don't work. Those of a certain political agenda hate the thought that a more regulated business in terms of pollutants might be better for American and the planet. If you accept there's a problem, then you're most of the way to accepting that something needs to be done about it. Taking action beyond pure market forces cuts into many people's belief system on how things should work. In the meantime it's easier to stick their heads in the sand - if there's no problem then you don't have to do anything about it. last edited: 1/20/06 11:09:39 AM” 11:08:04 AM 1/20/06 “Gods Hummers' haven't run for years, because no auto mechanics have made it to heaven. Yes, he has more than Arnold.” 11:09:54 AM 1/20/06 “y2 - I don't own (and I seriously doubt trailkicker67 owns) a power plant or a automobile manufacturing plant. My question was "What motivation do non-industry titans have to not believe in man-made global warming?"” 11:12:22 AM 1/20/06 “I admit the picture is not complete, but 95% of the world's scientists accept that human activities are impacting the climate. Either they are all wrong (which admittedly they could be - but even if we act on bad information, reducing emissions can not be seen as a bad thing anyway) or there's this huge conspiracy among virtually every expert in this field in a bid to gain funding. Stangely I would imagine that just as much money is avaiable from big companies, Exxon, Shell, Chevron et al, for scientists if they go out and say nothing is happening. It's a vast left-wing scientist conspiracy.” 11:15:15 AM 1/20/06 “Sarge - like I explained if you read my post - because any restrictions for whatever reason on businesses would go against views that a completely free market is the solution to everything.” 11:17:30 AM 1/20/06 “A completely free market solution? I would bet you there are very few people who believe there should be no regulations at all on business. If industry is causing the destruction of the world, I would be all for stopping it. Maybe trailkicker disagrees? (doubtful) I just don't believe that your perception of what a fiscal conservative's world view is is very accurate.” 11:22:16 AM 1/20/06 “Media types like Michael Crichton and John Stossel (who I expect do not own power plants or auto factories) like the notoriety they receive from fulfilling the desires of many people to hear that 'everything is Ok and going to be just fine, this world is for your benefit and you have no responsibility for its stewardship'.” 11:23:28 AM 1/20/06 “But there are those who favor greater or lesser restrictions on the market. For those who favor lesser, it goes against the grain that on something like polution greater controls of the free market may be needed.” 11:33:05 AM 1/20/06 “55° for a high here in SE Michigan today. There's got to be something going on. 55° in January is unheard of! Usually we're at -10° right now. last edited: 1/20/06 12:00:51 PM” 11:52:25 AM 1/20/06 “Y2, I understand the theories that are put up about this issue, but why can it not be just a natural climate change that we happen to be experiencing in our lifetime? That's something that not one single person can prove, it's all theory. And as for my view of the world, it's damn cold, 21 degrees this morning at the house. This past summer was very mild compared to the hot one we had the year before. So in my view of the world, it's getting colder....so much for global warming.” 11:59:53 AM 1/20/06 “Pretty cold in Russia too. I bet they are believing in global warming. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WEATHER/01/20/russia.cold.ap/index.html” 12:06:02 PM 1/20/06 “this world is for your benefit and you have no responsibility for its stewardship Sounds like an great overgeneralization of what non-gw theorists believe. Detroit Michigan: Today's High, 56F. Record High, 57F (1951) (weather.com)” 12:06:45 PM 1/20/06 “Moscow Deep freeze does have benefits .......At a zoo in Lipetsk, south of Moscow, director Alexander Osipov said monkeys would be given wine three times a day "to protect against colds," the RIA-Novosti news agency reported, while Rossiya television said a circus sea lion was being treated for pneumonia with brandy body rubs. last edited: 1/20/06 12:15:19 PM” 12:11:31 PM 1/20/06 “Hundred $/bl. will slow driving and demand for big cars, new roads ,car wax , cold beer and citation revenue. The beer issue is a big one.” 12:48:50 PM 1/20/06 Global Warming? “Did you read http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mars_ice-age_031208.html yep we are even harming MARS causing Global Warming and ALL!!!!!!! How bout this for a theory, From the 1300s to the mid 1800s we were in the "Little Ice Age" now what normally happens when a "Cold Period" ends???? It gets warmer.” 1:08:37 PM 1/20/06 “I think the earth is returning to it's rightly temperature.” 1:16:40 PM 1/20/06 “From the 1300s to the mid 1800s we were in the "Little Ice Age" now what normally happens when a "Cold Period" ends???? It gets warmer.” What!? It gets warmer? Nobody told me that! OMG! It's gonna get warmer? I wish it would hurry up because the temperature ain't broke 39 degrees all day! last edited: 1/20/06 1:20:37 PM” 1:19:43 PM 1/20/06 “Maybe the "Little Ice Age" was going to be a full-blown Ice Age, but the industrial revolution happened and ended it. ;-) It can't be proven, but it can't be disprove either. There really isn’t concrete evidence that shows that humans are causing global warming, but there also isn’t concrete evidence showing that humans aren't causing it. My main point is that we, as a race, should be cautious with our actions when they potentially could alter our environment.” 1:46:33 PM 1/20/06 “Recoreded history clearly shows that global temperatures are cyclic. Mankind tends to enjoy the warm periods with sucessful agriculture and merely survive the periods of cold. The gulf stream seems to be slowing due to influx of low density fresh water being introduced to areas above the artic circle. At times when little fresh water is present due to melting, cold dense salt water sinks, goes subsurface and rises near Africa. This tends to hold down water temps along the equator to the Caribbean. If the gulf stream continues to slow then we should see a much colder Europe and much warmer tropics. This imbalance should propagate more hurricanes and global temperature spikes hot and cold worldwide. It takes a while to happen we are along for the ride. last edited: 1/20/06 2:44:18 PM” 2:34:44 PM 1/20/06 “Global warming is not the most immediate threat to our survival on Earth. The big threat that needs to be considered is Near Earth Objects (NEO). These are asteroids and meteors that will come dangerously close to Earth, and possibly impact the Earth. Nasa scientists still have not figured out a way to effectively avert this disaster. Sure, global warming is bad over the long term (or is it?), but NEOs can kill millions the instant they hit Earth. O.K. so I am just kidding, but the whole global warming thing sort of seems to be getting out of hand. We just need to deal with the problem, and do what we can to conserve natural resources so they don't run out.” 8:01:03 PM 1/20/06 “As a side note, I do not even try to follow 'fear media'.” 8:02:39 PM 1/20/06 “Who's that dimbulb on the magazine site who's always repeating what he reads on coalmining company sites, like... "Record high levels of CO2 will be GREAT for plants!" LOL” 1:59:57 PM 1/21/06 “We are nearing the point where the levels of CO2 are deadly to animals, particularly the 2 legged kind.” 4:19:21 PM 1/21/06 “Is it just me, or is there a reverse correlation between those who drive the super SUV's and those who are concerned with global warming?” 4:21:29 PM 1/21/06 “"Should have drilled in Anwr", Cheney.” 8:34:06 PM 1/21/06 Jump to Page << prev
