What's hillariass is that you posted something about some phoney award, as if it meant something or proved something, and I posted a court ruling based on scientific facts, and you accuse me of posting propadanda!

Mr Justice Burton identified nine significant errors within the former presidential candidate’s documentary as he assessed whether it should be shown to school children. He agreed that Mr Gore’s film was “broadly accurate” in its presentation of the causes and likely effects of climate change

The other three main points accepted by the judge were that global temperatures are rising and are likely to continue to rise, that climate change will cause serious damage if left unchecked, and that it is entirely possible for governments and individuals to reduce its impacts.

From a Murdoch source too

I don't care if global warming is manmade or not. The corrections that Gore and others like him want will do more damage to the US than flooding our coastland. The Kyoto agreement will allow china and india to keep doing what they are doing and make US companies even less competitive.

Climate change has been occuring throughout the history of this planet. We are actually at the one of the lowest ocean levels in the last 450 million years. 20,000 years ago the ocean level was 120 feet lower than it is now, but for most of geological time the ocean surface has been 400-500 feet higher than it is now. man is a vain beast indeed to think we are going to control it.

...abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies.

'Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life,' concludes the Pentagon analysis. 'Once again, warfare would define human life.'

Climate change could create land loss, mass migrations, loss of natural resources, and increased demands on water that may exacerbate or cause conflict — "all things that could have some sort of effect on our security interests around the world," says retired Gen. Anthony Zinni, a member of the military advisory panel.

Now climate change can cause wars? Just goes to show that this was a political decision.

Look, I am not suggesting that his work should go unrecognized. I think he got a lot of people thinking about our impact on the enviroment. And that is a good thing. I am not a scientist, so I have no idea if his opinions are based on real science or not. But suggesting that global warming causes wars is a real stretch in my opinion.

Well - this report - there's a link to it from the NPR story link to above - compiled by former senior members of the US military, for the Pentagon, clearly states that climate change poses a security threat to the US in the future.

http://www.npr.org/documents/2007/apr/security_climate.pdf

A direct quote from the start of this report states:

"The nature and pace of climate changes being observed today and the consequences projected by the consensus scientific opinion are grave and post equally grave implications for our national security."

"Climate Change can act as a threat multiplier for instablity in some of the most volatile regions of the world..."

But I guess we can ignore this and call it a political decision?

But suggesting that global warming causes wars is a real stretch in my opinion.

It's absolutely ludicrous. Unless of course they mean that because of the increased B.S. regulations imposed by the governments due to the sky falling will affect industry and ultimately cause wars over money.

The pentagon report states that the scientific concensus resulting from climate change is what poses grave implications for national security, not necessarily the climate change itself. The natural change acts as a catalyst for the nutjobs to affect the economies. That's why Gore's B.S. movie is so dangerous. It affects political decisions.

good god Y2, the upper echelons of the military is nothing but political. On the one hand the left says the military are a bunch of liars and can't be trusted, but now they are the paragon of virtuosity. Are you suggesting we should use global warming as an excuse to increase the military budget? Thank you for your support.

Read the quote again. We all know climate does not start wars. So, where does the war come from? People. The only way climate will start a war is indirectly through people reacting to it. Period. Therefore, the problem lies when PEOPLE REACT to climate change, not the climate change itself.

The problem is not the climate people, it's the bozos that think things need to change because of the climate.

we need climate control laws. Mother nature should be subjected to a background check and there should be a 10 year waiting period before she can have any increases in yearly temperature.

Hyway - no - the right, like yourself, like to claim the left attack the Military - big difference there.

I have no problem with increasing the military budget if it's done for the right reasons. The invasion of Afganistan was the correct decision. The invasion of Iraq was a bs policy built on the ideas of a few extremist neocons who have now been discredited.

the problem is not the warming itself Hyway, it's just that modern civilization has built itself on the present climate basis, and faces huge problems is forced to adapt too rapidly - hence the potential for future conflict.

It amazes me that so many of the right are so stuck in the past that they think that developing cheaper renewable energy generation in America is a bad thing - do they all really have Exxon and Conoco stocks?

Can they really argue that America should continue to pour cash into the hands of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela?

There's so many reasons that moving off fossil fuels will be good for America, yet all they can do is whine and moan that it will destroy the country.

Y2, there have been long TT discussion on Nuclear energy, but the same fear mongers who are proclaiming doom from global warming treat it like the boogeyman and run screaming like scared little children. many of us on the right have no problem with wind farms either. Just because we don't believe that Africa should remain a third world country or that China and India should be allowed to unfairly compete with us don't mean we are stuck in the past.

actually, I am not going to simplify it to that. I don't know if gore made the slideshow with his own two little hands or if he had a paid congressional staff to prepare it for him, but he did jet all over the world pushing that slideshow on everyone he could. Then someone came up with the idea to turn his slideshow into a documentary and of course used him to narrate it. Still, a Peace Prize?

I'm not a big fan of Gore either - but he's certainly done much ot bring the matter higher up on the agenda.

Hyway - the nuclear thing is a dated picture - Environmental concerns are far more mainstream now than the picture you seem to paint there - but I don't really blame people after the nuclear accidents of previous years either. I'm not against nuclear in theorory, but I don't want to live next to a plant.

The competition thing is a smokescreen too. Relieving America of the dependence on fossil fuels, (a finite resource) will leave America much much more compeitive in the future as other countries battle it out over scare resources. It seems to me that the only thing stopping more comprehensive legistlation to drive an alternative energy future - is the money being pumped by big energy companies into Washington.
