“Check these out These are of my 67 miles in 3 days trip on the North South Trail. Photographic evidence that I had time to stop and take snap shots. Enjoy!” 5:21:33 PM 3/10/02 “Just a bit of wet walking in places, LOL. OTOH, easy to find water when it travels along with you. Thanks for the pics, WD.” 5:35:05 PM 3/10/02 BARE?! “Great pix. Still no leaves on the trees, season shock to this Floridian!” 5:41:40 PM 3/10/02 “That trip was from January. I just got back from a walk there this weekend and there is little starts of green grass in places.” 6:16:10 PM 3/10/02 “Cool pix, it does look a bit on the damp side...... Boy, they don't build shelters like that anymore (iron mountain shelter), wonder if it comes in an ultra light version.” 6:32:59 PM 3/10/02 “I haven't slept in one yet but I bet it would be interesting in a hard rain.” 6:34:05 PM 3/10/02 KaBoooom “or a thunder storm.......” 7:10:20 PM 3/10/02 “very nice pix dude! thanks for sharing that experience.. u sleep right on the bare nekkid ground in winter?...wow...u da man.” 7:26:02 PM 3/10/02 new name “walkindude, we're gonna start callin you "runnindude"...9 miles in 2.5 hours...your a hiking God. Me, I ended up going to Taum Sauk Mtn state park, and getting baptised in some very fierce water falls...lol. should have gone with you, would have had to run to keep up with you, but I would have stayed drier.” 8:06:04 PM 3/10/02 “Like I said before, I never run. I just don't take a break. Sounds like you had a pretty fun trip Stikmon. I don't get any waterfalls though.” 8:30:46 PM 3/10/02 fun “I did have a fun trip, didn;t accomplish my goal, but I did camp out in the car on Friday night. the storm was so nasty it was rocking my car all night...but what a light show...and the answer to the age old question...what is car camping...it is when you sleep in your car at the campground. anything else is just camping.” 9:06:15 PM 3/10/02 “Nice pictures, WD. I had a great time this weekend at Montgomery Bell. It rained the first hour of our hike on Sat. then cleared up and the rest of the trip was beautiful! We stayed at Hall Spring shelter. The hiking was nice with the rolling hills. I want to go back sometime soon. I tried out my new Golite breeze pack this weekend. My total pack weight including food was 20 lbs. I felt as if I was dayhiking! Ultralight is the way to go!” 10:36:54 PM 3/10/02 “Wish I could have gone on that trip WD, but my wife had other plans. She went to an art class, then she dragged me and the kids back to Hobby Lobby so she could get my input on decorating items for our home. Maybe another time. It looks like a fun hike.” 10:39:33 PM 3/10/02 “Great pictures Dude, .. Thanks for sharing them with us!” 10:44:33 PM 3/10/02 “Thanks yall. Katibug. That's a good pack weight. This weekend mine started out at 18 pounds. Don't ya just love going light?!?!” 10:55:07 PM 3/10/02 “OM Well, I did have a trash bag for a ground sheet plus my z-rest pad” 7:31:12 PM 3/11/02 “ooops. Wasn't done yet. The temp got down to 26 the firts night but it wasn't bad. It was Much colder at Shining Rocks!” 7:35:04 PM 3/11/02 “Good pics wd!” 7:46:31 PM 3/11/02 “Thats nutz 9 miles in 2.5 hours! CRAZY MAN!!!!! Sounds cool to me. 8)” 7:53:51 PM 3/11/02 Nice Pics Dude! “Thanks for sharing” 8:09:39 PM 3/11/02 “Nice shots WD! That shelter is sure funky looking. You didn't sleep in it, did you?” 8:32:41 PM 3/11/02 “WD-Ultralight is the way to go! I have convinced my husband to get a Golite Gust backpack and go ultralite with me. I figured I'd finally find a way to get him to go backpacking with me.” 9:57:04 PM 3/11/02 “Thanks yall! No, I didn't sleep in the shelter. I would have but I wasn't near it when it came time to bed down. YEAH! Ultra light! 9 miles in 2 1/2 hours is just a result of continious walking and not needing to stop.” 10:10:26 PM 3/11/02 “Thats fast dude! 8)” 10:16:02 PM 3/11/02 “I'm not a slow walker by any means but I don't think I'm exceptionally fast either. I am able to look around as I walk. I just rarely stop. Keep this in mind. When a group goes hiking they tend to stop somewhere and gawk at a place or if one person stops then most everybody stops. It suddenly becomes a 5 - 20 min break while everyone waits for someone else to start walking again. How many times does this happen each day during a group hike? I enjoy stopping at overlooks, waterfalls, ect but when I'm soloing I may stop for a min. or two then moove on. All those 5 - 20 min breaks add up. figure on average a person can cover a mile in 15 - 20 mins. that's a lot of miles that are not gained due to taking many long breaks.Plus, some people get up and lay in the tent for a while and finally roll out. Get their $hit together, boil water, make coffee, eat something, make more coffee, and sit around a while longer. Finally they break camp! From what I've seen, it takes most people an hour to load 40 pounds of stuff back into a pack and start looking like they are ready to go. Me, I wake up, crawl out and start packing. I'm ready most of the time in 20 mins. Less time loafing = more miles per day. So see, It's all in Time Management.” 5:31:33 PM 3/12/02
