What are the best gloves for winter use. “Now that every store/web site is having a winter clearance sale I have started looking at gloves but I am not quite sure what to look for. What do you guys use. There are lots of styles and brands out there. I have noticed some stores that have glove liners but are they necessary? I did a search for gloves but nothing came up. Any comments are welcome.” 11:01:13 PM 3/10/02 “What do you want the gloves for and under what conditions? Working, fine motor skills, keeping idle hands warm, or ??” 11:06:18 PM 3/10/02 “I have Mountain Hardwear windstopper fleece that are my favorites, lost some Mountain Hardwear liner types that I loved. When it gets colder I put on some nylon overmits. With glove liners, fleece gloves and overmits, you get a many options for various weather conditions. The combinations take me from cool to subzero.” 11:08:41 PM 3/10/02 “I would want the gloves so they would keep my hands warm, whether they are working or being idle.” 11:27:50 PM 3/10/02 “I use a pair of regular fleece gloves (cheapies) with a pair of Mountain Hard Wear waterproof breathable gaunlets. Serves me well while sking, snowshoeing or backpacking in any cold weather.” 12:14:44 AM 3/11/02 “i use a pair of cheap manzella fleece gloves. they have held up surprisingly well under much heavy use. they keep my hands warm even when wet without making my hands sweaty. not as much dexterity as i would like when doing things like opening my knife, but good for most other things.” 4:25:00 AM 3/11/02 “A combo - Polypro liners, Marmot DriClime Shell gloves, and Gortex overmitts.” 5:29:10 AM 3/11/02 “I like using liners and if it's real cold I'll use rag wool over them. The liners are great cause you can still cook, eat, get stuff out of your pack, set up camp, ect and they still offer protection & warmpth but not the bulk of ski gloves. It's hard to do a lot of tasks in thick gloves.” 5:30:02 AM 3/11/02 “1/4 inch thick wool gloves i picked up at the Army Surplus for $1. Never been TO cold in them, they keep you warm and dry, even if its windy.” 5:35:09 AM 3/11/02 “I have windstopper fleece gloves that I love for cold weather. Also have several pair of liner gloves, both polypro and wool. The liners are handy to have - I carry them as part of my 3 season survival stuff, wear them under my biking gloves, as a light layer in cool weather, etc.” 7:38:13 AM 3/11/02 “I thought I replied to a gloves thread before. (couldn't find the thread either) For hiking. Capilene glove liners for warmth, and Marmot Windstopper Gloves when its cold and windy. Roll sleeves over hands if its raining.” 10:01:08 AM 3/11/02 “I have a pair of cheapo nylon fleece gloves I use most of the time and a set of Columbia polartech gloves with wet proof mittens for really cold weather/ skiing etc.” 10:32:58 AM 3/11/02 “I like the windstopper fleece gloves too but don't get them anywhere near a fire.” 12:11:55 PM 3/11/02 “Polypro liner gloves, 200-300 Polar fleece mitts and Outdoor Research Gore-Tex over mitts - large variety off variations from warm to extremely warm.” 12:27:36 PM 3/11/02 here's an option “I use rag wool but the tips of the fingers are not there. at times when sitting for a long period of time (hunting) in 0 degree the fingers do get cold, but I need the "Touch", so try these fingerless with liners, I'm going to try it... seems simple to me.” 12:39:38 PM 3/11/02 “For winter working gloves I use a pair of leather work gloves two sizes too big and put a pair of ragg gloves inside. Work some boot grease into the leather by just taking a glob with your fingers and wringing and working your hands together (while wearing the gloves, of course). Then you have a pair of water repellent work gloves good to single digit temperatures. Military surplus flight gloves are a good liner that leaves you with finger dexterity while wearing them alone.” 12:51:46 PM 3/11/02 “While bp-ing and while collecting firewood, I use work gloves, mostly leather if I can find them. They help protect my hands from cuts and punctures, especially when I fall. Also, they protect my hands from a hiking stick, which I use as a third leg. In cold weather I use wool, military glove inserts inside the work gloves. When real cold, I wear the wool inserts while I sleep.” 1:20:28 PM 3/11/02 “Yall carry leather gloves BPing? HEAVY” 7:40:34 PM 3/11/02 “And some of the threads are just plain freaky. Disappearing and reappearing posts. Freaky I tell ya. Freaky.” 7:49:22 PM 3/11/02 “I just love the Mittens that REI has they keep your hands real warm and dry. 8)” 7:51:44 PM 3/11/02 “That was supposed to have been on another thread. See what I mean. Freaky.” 7:53:09 PM 3/11/02 “Hhaahahahahah.....8)” 7:54:47 PM 3/11/02 “Just rambling... Backpacker's daily feature yesterday was about the fact that if you are cold and shivering a good thing to do is warm your hands and feet. If the wind kicks up or it starts to get cold out I have found that putting on gloves and a hat often warms me up as much - if not more than a jacket. You often see joggers in shorts and a t-shirt but with gloves on.” 6:25:13 AM 7/27/02 “i wear a catcher mitt, works great....” 11:20:48 AM 7/27/02 “I think sterile surgical glove are recommended for most TT hikes.” 11:35:31 AM 7/27/02 “I love my lightweight gloves. My hands also get beat up more when its cool/cold so they provide some protection, too.” 1:01:59 PM 7/27/02 “a hat is one of the most important things to keep you warm. They say that you lose 90% of your heat thought your head. Sence I have a shaved head I wear a winter hat alot in the spring, fall, and winter.” 1:02:12 PM 7/28/02 Fingerless Gloves “I use collapsible hiking poles & canoe a lot, so fingerless gloves are very nice year round. They leave you some dexterity without having to remove them.” 7:46:09 AM 7/31/02 I've got to get glasses “I thought your message title said, "Fiberglass gloves". I was wondering how they could be so comfortable. Anyway, have you seen those mittens where the top pulls back to expose the fingers? I thought those would be nice to have for the winter.” 7:56:58 AM 7/31/02 “Liners for Northern (Rockies) summers and Southern autumn and early spring. Fleece for Southern winter. Combination for Northern winter. The liners are essential for frigid temps. I can remove the outer pair, yet still have protection against the frigidity. The liners still allow dexterity for lacing boots, striking matches, pelvic exams, etc...” 3:44:21 PM 7/31/02 “Yah, they keep your hands from freezing to the speculum...” 3:49:21 PM 7/31/02 “Very funny guys. I'll remember to descibe a friends polyp removal surgery for you. He was awake for the whole thing.” 4:06:09 PM 7/31/02 “A friend of my dad, that is. When the surgeon describes it as a couple hundred jelly bellies that's bad.” 4:07:12 PM 7/31/02 “I'm gonna hurl.” 5:50:34 PM 7/31/02 Heaven On Yer Hands “I tried on a pair of MH Tempest gloves at an outfitters last year...they fit like a glove (lol), felt like heaven and were so packable I had to get'em.” 8:43:50 PM 8/01/02
