it has been many years since i have done this hike....brandy and i are taking our two oldest daughters (ages 16 and 13) to experience this great hike in mid july....they are both in fairly good shape and are experienced backpackers....my question is this....should i allow 3 or 4 days for us to get to the valley floor? Winnett's book "Sierra North" recommends 3 days at moderate pace, 4 days at leisurely pace, but i am not clear as to whether this would include side trips to clouds rest and/or half dome....what do you all think??

also, does anyone have any garcia bear proof food containers that they would want to sell or rent??

gonzo<\b>,
I've been wanting to do that hike as well, I'll probably do it in September this year. You should be able to do it in three days, staying around Vogelsang and Merced Lake High Sierra Camps or Sunrise and Little Yosemite Valley HSC. If you were to add Half Dome or Clouds Rest add one day per location. Don't forget leather gloves for the cables on Half Dome.

As for bear canisters, the park rents them for $3/day + deposit. You can buy them for $59.75 at The Whitney Portal Store. I believe the price includes shipping.

Have a great time and be sure to bring plenty of bug spray!

Just something else to consider...from Catherdal Pass cut cross country to Echo Lake, then pick up the trail down to Merced River and then down to Little Yosemite. Over night at Little Yosemite do Half Dome early before the crowds and out the same day.

I did that in 3 days in October '96 or '97. The sunset and sunrise from Clouds rest was awesome!
