Range Rover “Any one in here drive a Range Rover and/or Land Rover? The older ones nothing new...don't need the $70K one off the lot. I'm wondering how you like them? Dependable? Break down? Heck, while I'm asking that...anyone into the old LandCruisers? How are they? Need to get a new vehicle that'll suit me for sleeping in the hills, driving anywhere, etc, etc. Thanks for any info! Live well...” 10:24:36 AM 3/11/02 “Is it made in England? Then its probably junk!” 10:28:19 AM 3/11/02 “I've got a can opener on my keychain! I can do exchange rates in my head! I can make a fire with two sticks! I know how to make guacamole. I can yodel! (in the canyon, that is) (sorry! couldn't resist!)” 10:31:15 AM 3/11/02 “Prepare to be flamed, guilted and generally insulted by the local eco-nazi, neo-snobbish hypocrital types here. We take enough #&%!$ for choosing SUVs but when it happens to be a more exclusive brand there's bound to be trouble! I've heard the Land Cruisers are good. I don't know about the older RRs but I'd love to have a Discovery. "Drive Without Guilt"” 10:36:24 AM 3/11/02 “Ya snob!” 10:37:58 AM 3/11/02 “I have an SUV and a 4WD pickup. I drive both without any guilt at all.” 10:40:26 AM 3/11/02 “Have you looked at a Defender 90 or 110?” 10:45:22 AM 3/11/02 blah blah blahh “I already drive a pickup that sucks too much gas I don't care about that...anyone who wants to #&%!$ about that go ahead!! I'll drive what I want guilt free ...now back to the question...are they tough vehicles? I thought I heard they were made simply in other words easy to fix also...one of the reasons they're used in so many safari's?” 10:48:23 AM 3/11/02 “Hmmm, they are seen in a lot of films of doings in Africa. It could be that in countries such as Kenya or South Africa(British colonies) the import duties favor the British products. A sort of protectionism? A brother of mine worked on some of the Land Rovers when needed....not his usual product(Audi)....and he said, "yes, they are made in England!......and they don't pay #&%!$ on warranty work!"” 10:59:11 AM 3/11/02 PersonalOpinionsAreSimplyCredence DespiteTheTruth “This entire thread is absolute proof that SUV users are amoral and completely stupid.” 11:07:54 AM 3/11/02 “I think those were in the days before British Leyland and everything British went to Hell. Now that they've exorcised that daemon, I've heard that things have improved greatly. They just went through a dark period. Sorry I can't give anymore concrete info than that. I'm sure there are forums specific to British vehicles SOMEwhere on the 'net. And don't mind Nigal and Gordon. They think anyone to the left of Jim Watt is an Eco-Terrorist, LOL. And Tom? Well, Tom is just... Tom: never passing up a chance to advocate for the devil.” 11:08:23 AM 3/11/02 “A friend of mine has an older Land Rover. I wouldn't have it if he paid me to take it. Gas mileage stinks and he's always having to do repairs on it. Buy stock in axels, they stay broken. Maybe he has a lemon...” 11:11:11 AM 3/11/02 “Hey! Wanna buy a '95 Exploder? The transmission has ONLY been rebuilt three times! *G*” 11:12:18 AM 3/11/02 wow “No good words for the british $hit...guess I may be looking elsewhere? Sincerely, An amoral and stupid person If only I could agree with Buddur then I would be so wise ;)” 11:35:39 AM 3/11/02 11:44:59 AM 3/11/02 ...itsonlynatural ignore the banter... “....if you're gonna look elsewhere..then take a look at the new Hummer H2...there aren't any other vehicles out there that'll come close to touching this one...you won't be disappointed Yeah LR has had there problems and I suppose that's why BMW dumped the line....check out the H2!” 11:47:13 AM 3/11/02 “According to some it wasn't until Ford bought Jaguar that they could turn out a reliable car......nice, but typically British. Similarly, in the '40s, it wasn't until Packard and Ford built engine factories in England that the Rolls Royce Merlin(Vee-12...Mustang, Hurricane, Spitfire) became a truely reliable engine with truely interchangable parts. Evil......dat's me! Where can I join the Eco-Taliban?” 12:16:18 PM 3/11/02 “Is there an Eco in here?” 12:35:08 PM 3/11/02 “I thought Land Rovers were made by Toyota. Range Rovers are made in England and are the ultimate SUV.” 12:45:03 PM 3/11/02 “I have a 98 Landrover Discovery LSE. They are the ultimate SUV. They drive great, can go anywhere(literaly), they do suck some gas, but hey nothings perfect. It heats quickly, so those cold nights dont take long to get good heat going. Has a differental lock for going up steep icy hills, etc. I havent had to do any major repairs on mine. minus liek just wear and tear. They service department(in charlotte) are exceptionally nice. They can charge alot for replacing brake pads and stuff, so I would recommend let them find the probs then take to a friend mechanic. Anyways. They drive very smooth, in the rain they go thru puddles like they are not there. They arent top heavy, the frame at the bottom is steel, and the top is aluminium(sp). Just go and watch some of the movies with them and youll understand they can go anywhere. If you are really intrested in getting a good used one, I can get you in touch with a guy here where I live that gets them at an auction in Atlanta for a decent price. Just let me know if you have any other question.” 12:59:09 PM 3/11/02 “My friend has a Land Rover. He's had a lot of problems with it. He also paid a pretty penny for it and is scared to take it off road and scratch it. What's the point then?!?! Most of the people who own these vehicles are a bunch of yuppy posers. If you're looking to throw some money away, why don't you write me a check instead?” 1:05:42 PM 3/11/02 “If its your money guess you can do what you want with it. Shrug I dont think id take a 70k rangerover off road either, but taking a used 20k land rover is anthor thing :)” 1:07:42 PM 3/11/02 “Land Rover makes Range Rover and Toyota make Land Cruiser. Drive 'em like ya got 'em.” 1:23:14 PM 3/11/02 HUMMERS RULE!!!!!!! “...if you want a real SUV...get a Hummer...forget those other wannabe's ....” 1:28:01 PM 3/11/02 “AVOID any LAND/Range ROVER.THEY ARE JUNK.My friend owns one.Breaks down constaantly.PARTS ARE EXtremely EXPENSIVE.” 1:28:54 PM 3/11/02 “AVOID any LAND/Range ROVER.THEY ARE JUNK.My friend owns one.Breaks down constaantly.PARTS ARE EXtremely EXPENSIVE.” 1:28:55 PM 3/11/02 “I have a 1984 Landcruiser fj60 wagon....This is the vehicle your looking for..any model from about 81 to 88 is where I'd look...Mine has well over 200K on the original engine and it's still running strong... http://www.tlc4x4.com/2000/SpecPages/fj60_specs.htm” 1:29:05 PM 3/11/02 “What, is this like, your first hummer? Come on man, people been doin' THAT for years!” 1:30:44 PM 3/11/02 “AVOID any LAND/Range ROVER.THEY ARE JUNK.My friend owns one.Breaks down constaantly.PARTS ARE EXtremely EXPENSIVE.How about a lousy oxygen sensor for 300bux however you have 2 on a Rover!Thats gonna be an expensive smog check! If you want reliable stay Jap.Otherwise have deep pockets or good w/tools. A guy i know runs a euro car shop and i can tell you bmw, benz, porsche all are beautiful cars but break down constantly and parts are stratospheric as are the repairs.” 1:35:15 PM 3/11/02 “And the auto dealers are fervently screwing the #&%!$ out of the customers AND their own mechanics.” 1:46:26 PM 3/11/02 Tom Terrific... “....logically speaking....since the H2 only came out this year...explain how people have been doing it for years?...” 2:24:07 PM 3/11/02 “Rewind...” 3:29:24 PM 3/11/02 “We had one in Africa. I loved the thing, but it is the type of vehichle that was perfect for Africa, and European parts were easier to come by in Africa than here. I would go with a hummer. iIf your looking for somthing in the states. But if you plan to use it in Africa........” 3:38:28 PM 3/11/02 “if u bang up that aluminum stuff you cant repair it cuz bondo dont stick-an aluminum hood will cost u 1200bux alone. Stay away from Rover. Cherokees are spotty on reliability but cheaper parts,great4x4 ability, better handling than exploders or broncos. Save yerself much headaches and buy a Jap.The 4 cylinders have a better rep than the 6 so check that out first..” 3:48:41 PM 3/11/02 “Stratus...he was talking about you being excited over a "hummer".. Hummer..(noun) For a person to have his member vibrated by another person orally. also known as a BJ. I like my 2002 Sport trac so far..wish i would have been able to wait for a mini hummer...hehe then i could get my hummers anywhere anytime!!” 3:50:21 PM 3/11/02 OPIE “...quite illogical....OK....how about this....i've been working on this one awhile....and....it's a bit of a cliche mate but here it goes...."does not compute".....oooooooohhhhh I get it....It was a metaphor and it was intended to produce laughter.....ha ha.....anyhow...thanks for the explanation...not in a million years would i've figured that out (rolling eyes to the rest of the crowd while he's not looking)!!!!” 4:07:09 PM 3/11/02 “the land rovers that you see on safaris are not the soccer mom wagons that you're used to. the safari trucks are land rover defenders. they stopped making them a few years ago. want big gas-guzzlin' action? get a ramcharger or an old international!” 5:06:55 PM 3/11/02 “We had Defender 90's in the army called R.S.O.V. roll-cage,no roof and lots of firepower (ranger special operations vehicle). 4cyl turbo deisel. BAD @SS!!!!! They took mondo-abuse (like driving outta the back of a C-130 taxing at 65mph driven by a bunch of 19 year olds who acted like 19 year olds). I WILL own one someday. Parts are expensive (for any car now ) so learn to turn a wrench and enjoy. Till then I will enjoy my 93 cherokee witha 102k miles (20mpg) and dream...........” 9:18:43 PM 3/11/02 “Like almost everything, the reputation of some vehicles was earned by earlier models when some attention was actually still paid to the detail of construction, quality of parts, etc., then went downhill whenever the manufacturer wanted to mass-produce the thing at a lower cost. I have a 1994 LandCruiser, and will swear it is absolutely the finest vehicle ever made bar none. HOWEVER, you should know that LandCruisers are now built on a different platform (W Toyota trucks), in a diff location, with diff procedures. That's one of the reasons for the proliferation of "new" Toyota SUV's just in the past year or two... the Sequoia, etc. The LandCruiser as we know and love it, will be no more in another year or so, Toyota actually wanted to phase it out this year but customers b!tched. I'm with wsdavies, buy an older one, when a LandCruiser was still a LandCruiser deserved of the name. They can go anywhere, and were originally designed to do so before "SUV" became a pop buzz word for wanna-be's.” 12:28:01 AM 3/12/02 “Land Rover'S are cool, Range Rovers are for yupped up posers. I used a Land Rover about 13 years ago. It had no shocks but it was the bomb baby! It was very utilitarian with no much in the line of frills but it got me places. I had no problems with it. A big thumbs up for the Toyota Landcruiser too!” 4:58:44 AM 3/12/02 “Hmmm..... here's a thought. Buy American? I know it's not popular at the moment, but in light of the 9/11 tragedy, and the information available about which automobile manufacturers contributed to the victim relief funds and which ones kept their hands in their collective deep pockets, there is no way I'd buy another Toyota. I drove the same 1989 GMC pickup truck for 12 years and 210K miles. I intend to do the same with the 1999 I just traded it on. If you're dead set on an SUV, the Tahoe or Yukon ain't a bad alternative. Before you all jump in to inform me that Nissan is made in Smyrna TN, or that Toyotas and Hondas also are made in the USA, don't waste your breath. I know all about it. I also know where the profits go after the bottom line is calculated, and where the majority of the stock is held for the various auto makers. THAT is precisely why I drive a Chevrolet. Yes, I also know that many of the components of my Chevy are made in other countries. Don't bother.” 6:10:38 AM 3/12/02 “What is a Red Rover and why do people want them to come over?” 6:18:29 AM 3/12/02 “Its an un-manned communist spy plane......sshhhhhhh! We want 'em to come over your house. Nissan, Toyota, and Honda are non-union.” 6:45:22 AM 3/12/02 “Honda turned a bigger profit than either of the US' big two automakers last year. The UAW has been trying to get into many plants in Ohio (as told to me by a Honda employee from Ohio). They (UAW) are/were unwanted by the workers. Obviously they are quite happy having only one groups of bosses to contend with.” 6:07:08 PM 3/12/02 “non-union, huh? i may have to get the wife that new pathfinder she wants.” 6:14:19 PM 3/12/02 “The Toyota Landcruiser is an outstanding truck. Be sure that you avoid some of the earlier models that suffer from severe lack of power. Be aware that full time four-wheel drive makes for a thirsty vehicle. Land Rover has had its problems. I would stay away unless you are quite the gearhead. Just go to the local dealership and look at the lot. Oil stains everywhere. The Defender is a legitimate rock solid truck, but if the speedometer breaks (know someone whose did) the bill is $900. Just imagine if the engine (Buick) were to fail. Again full time four wheel drive and a serious drinking problem. I drive a 99 Tahoe which has offered 117,000 trouble free miles (knock on wood) and has plenty of room. About 16mpg on average. Not great...but lotsa steel for protection. I am all for enviornmental protection...but first I will protect my family from the other monster vehicles out there.” 9:31:24 PM 3/13/02 “I think they both look cool but if I had the money I would get the Land Rover Discovery. That thing is pimp! 8)” 9:36:28 PM 3/13/02
