Hey, does anybody have any ideas for a research paper topic. I'm looking for something in this area, something that interests me anyway, but i haven't been able to think of a topic.

My professor doesn't seem to appreciate really controversial topics, or total informational secondary research based topics.

I thought there might be something out there to write about.

Nothing controversial or informational secondary research? What does he like then? LOL

How about the impact of urban growth on surrounding wildernesses. Or global warming?

How about something more current -- like the Congressional hearings going on now about ecoterrorism?

How about ............... Ayn Rand?

Throw in a lesbian theme and you'll get an A for sure.

simer, what's the class and what are the paper requirements? I teach college composition, and you need to establish what the scope of the assignment allows for before I could give you suggestions.

And if that don't work, she's got a sister Ann Rand who wrote a bang up thesis on subjectivism.

I'm afraid to go backpacking now because of ECO-TERRORISTS!

Being a good liberal, I should get someone else to do my backpacking for me.............and take no responsibility!

Go to the end, folks. This site could earn a lot of doctorates if it doesn't watch out.

I've turned in a few papers that made as much sense. :)

Hows abouts Depression era work programs and our parks systems, providing for homelessness or "how to live on the cheap!"

Would work for Political Sci, Socialology, Economics, Gov't. And would probably make for fascinating reading.

Violin -I only made it to the start of the second paragraph:

"Sexual identity is meaningless," says Sartre

This paper has never been discussed in our local pool hall.
------------------------
When I tried to return to the paper, I discovered new text and this:

The essay you have just seen is completely meaningless ...

At least I was not completely fooled.

You can click on that link as many times as you want and generate a new, equally meaningless essay. Great fun at parties!

I guess we’re kind of ignoring simer190’s original question though. You didn’t say what subject. Here’s a couple of backpacking related topics:

The effect of terrorism on leisure activities

Social interactions among long distance hikers

Well, the subject is just a research paper on any topic, for college composition class, rhetoric the essay...

i was looking for a topic in this area, and i think i'll look into a few of the ideas suggested, maybe i'll come up with something

Bigfoot Sightings in the Northwest. Start research with some of the writings of the late Grover Krantz- Washington State University professor of anthropology.

Okay, simer, college comp research.

1. It's important that you not address a topic your teacher is likely to have suffered through a gazillion times before. So abortion, affirmative action, binge drinking, and, lately any topic dealing with 9/11 such as passenger profiling, should be avoided at all costs.

2. Once you find a fairly fresh topic, you need to take a clear point of view with a obvious attitude that assures you will cover new ground -- in other words, if the common viewpoint on the subject is easy to determine, consider taking the other side or a divergent view. It will force you to come up with livelier, non-cliched explanations and reasoning.

3. Make sure you use your sources carefully, paraphrasing in most cases and quoting only brief, unique, and significant passages, and in either case, only to support and bolster your p.o.v., not stand in for it. AND MAKE SURE YOU CITE YOUR SOURCES ACCORDING TO THE METHOD PREFERRED BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR, most likely MLA or APA, both parenthetically and Works Cited/Bibliography page.

So, now for a thesis:

Thread deterioration on Internet message boards signals a broader pattern of decline in 21st Century cultural discourse that leads to a celebration of otherwise marginalized juvenalia such as excrement and flatulance jokes, playing in sloppy foods, arguing over rock band preferences, and
camping in the wilderness.

Don't forget to include how you think Ayn Rand would have felt about Lime Green Jello.

How about, "Ethnic minorities and their approach to backpacking."

On a side note I saw a black person on the trail this weekend. First one in two years. He was in a dayhike only area with a youth group.

If your instructor truly doesn't want an argumentative paper, just something that shows your research and expository chops, try something that allows an expansive discussion such as:

Trail Dogs: A historical perspective on canine companionship and conflict among backcountry walkers.

For "historical" you can substitute any of the major critical theories of analysis -- Marxist, feminist, performance, etc.

Could you discuss public land use and the problems with satisfying each outdoor use group (backpackers/hikers, ATV'ers, snowmobilers, x-country skiers, horsebackriders, mountain bikers, hunters) without allowing the public land to be overused and degraded. Use of volunteer groups to maintain these public lands, water supplies and facilities, while allowing states to cull timber to fill state coffers (or maintain park roads and facilities, depending on the amt. of dollars involved). Or is this topic overdone?

I think pekka just helped me name my next band - Juvenalia - or maybe my daughter.

An Even more basic topic - and with plenty of opeinion and web support - ultalight backpacking. How does the joy/sorrow or cost/benefit ratio tilt for ultralighters?
