Breathable Nylon Pants
What type of nylon breathable pants do u like?I havent been able to find a cheap alternative to Columbia etc gear.I have been looking at Ross, thrift stores and have seen some ok pants but wasnt sure if they were breathable and/or they had poor fitting. Is there any type of nylon i should be looking at?I know columbia boasts about their supplex nylon but it looks pretty easy to tear.Any ideas.

I have a pair of the Sportif Supplex Nylon pants from Campmor. They breathe well, dry VERY fast, and are MUCH sturdier than they look. They are the most comfortable pants I own when it's hot (I get Posion Ivy just from hearing the words so I wear long pants) and somehow still keep the wind out at -20 deg. Mine are 5or 6 years old and still not worn thru. I highly recommend them.

I got a pair of nylon pants with mesh insert from Ths Sports Authority. Don't know what brand. They were on sale for $12. I think they're made for running.

I got a pair of polyester microfibre pants with full side zips at an outdoors shop in Montreal (la Cordée). I have a G-Tex parka and wear G-Tex spats (gaiters) and they are fine even in the rain. I recently purchased a pair of high waist 'Mistral' polyester microfibre pants with integrated braces and full zip from Mountain Equipment Co-op (Canada's REI).

I think the full zip is the most important, particularly in mountaineering or winter situations. I don't think that w'proof/breathable overtrousers are wise, because this stops the breathing through gaiters and parka, while not enough pant is exposed to be a problem.

JMHO: Happy trails.

Check out Railriders Eco Mesh pants. Full side zips for great ventilation and the fabric is so breathable you'll only use the side zippers for hiking uphill. They cost more than something you can buy in department store though.

Mesh liners aren't everyone's cup of tea. Some are more comfortable for hiking than others. I have a couple pair of convertible REI pants, Sahara model I think, that I got on sale. No mesh liner, but durable, light and windproof.

For cooler weather, or situations where I know I don't want the zip off leg option, I have some TNF guide pants in heavier weight nylon that I got on closeout through STP. Very comfortable and durable, but the "peached" finish is a real lint/hair magnet.

My Pants Are Also Rad
I have a couple pairs of Gramicci pants that I just love. They got tons of mesh to vent but aren't zip-off convertible pants, don't matter though cause I hardly ever hike in shorts. I also tried on North Face, Royal Robbins and Columbia pants and the Gramicci's won the Feels & Fits Good Test. A while after getting them, Backpacker Mag had an article and gave Grammicci pants a low score because of the deep and huge pockets...and that's one of the features I like about them. Like tonight, I carried my wool hat and gloves in the pockets to be able to pull them out without having to dig through my shoulder sack. Sometimes I wonder about those testers!
